In the interest being helpful to me (in putting together the digest) and to
others (in scanning through the digest), please give your messages a Subject
that pertains to the message. In case a message does come through to me
with a Subject line such as "re: ACADIE Digest, Number ??", I will go ahead
and attempt to give an appropriate subject for the benefit of all; the
subject I give it will be contained in brackets.
If you have web access, check out the web site. I have updated it
considerably in the last week and have added a link to our soon-to-be archives.

Wow wow wow - I'm more than a little excited about this new list - thanks
Kenley for setting this stuff up!

This album has been in *heavy* rotation in my cd player - I wouldn't call
it a 'country' album per se, but I really wouldn't know what to categorize
it as - folk/country/??? Dan calls it an "Americana" album... Anyway,
Emmylou's voice is, as always, very beautiful and is only hightened by
Lanois' production - what a great combination!
You mentioned the photograph of her in the studio - The photography in the
album is very very fitting for the 'mood' of the album - just thought I'd
mention this since sometimes stuff like that gets overlooked.. :)

Also...
Brian Cook asked about the song "Need Somebody To Love" off of the Lanois
documentary (which, by the way was not shown in the US as far as I know...
I paid 20 bucks for the video... worth it, tho.. :) ).
I don't know if this was ever released - I was wondering about it also. I
did notice on the Lanois home page that there is a promo that includes
"Elle Est Belle et Bonne" - another song featured in the documentary, as
well as a few that I've not heard of at all....
Has anybody seen the movie "Camilla" starring Jessica Tandy? Lanois has a
few songs in it - Bridget Fonda stars as a singer, and 'performs' part of
"The Messenger." "Jolie Louise" (I think) and "Under a Stormy Sky" are also
heard as background music. The thing is - in the credits, "Under..." isn't
listed, but a Lanois song called "Public Enemy" *is*... So was this an
alternate name for "Under a Stormy Sky" or was it a completely separate
song that I missed in the movie...? Anyone?

Kenley asks:
>Did he play anywhere else in the country on this tour with Emmylou?
I was under the impression that the entire tour was with Lanois. When she
played at the State Theatre in Portland last week, it was billed as
"Emmylou Harris with the Danois Lanois band." I believe I saw ads in the
Boston papers listing the shows the same way.
I didn't see the show, as the date (the 10th I think) and location were
inconvenient for me, nor did I see any reviews of it. I guess this could
mean his band was without him or something, but I assumed Lanois was along
for the whole tour.

Hi folks,
there is an Emmylou Harris web site that has lots of great stuff in it,
including a bunch of reviews of her recent shows with DL. The URL is :
http://www.nashville.net/~kate/
Wrecking Ball is amazingly good. I've been listening to it over and over
again for weeks now, especially 'Blackhawk' (written by DL) and 'Deeper
Well' (cowritten by DL).

Brian, on the video "Rocky World", DL plays some of that song. I bought the
video at a mall store, blockbuster or something, it should be relatively
easy to find.

I don't have the lyrics, but I recommend that everyone check out the
original of this song, on the album The Wild Tchoupitoulas, which includes
members of the Neville Brothers.
Anybody else into cajun/zydeco?

Okay, a few general questions:
Is there something other than the "American Edition" of FtBoW? Different cover,
different tracks?
Also, I'm on the lookout for any DL lyrics... kind of annoying that they're not
all printed somewhere in the inserts.
I have a (not too great) VHS copy of VH1's "Meet the Maker" interview with
Daniel Lanois, and would be interested in trading for any other Lanois video
material. Anybody got anything??

"Wrecking Ball" is quite similar sonically to DLs other projects,
particularly his two solo efforts. The guitar textures are definitely his,
and the whole CD basically wreaks of Lanois, with a lot of space and mood
and reverb-drenched instruments. Harris' voice sounds as if she is singing
to you and you alone in a dark room, her voice intimate, and often dropping
or trailing off. The songs are very strong, in my opinion, and I think
stronger than on DL's solo CDs. As with many Lanois recordings, the whole
mood of many of the songs evokes an almost church-like aura. I'm not
normally into country either, but if you like Lanois at all, this is one of
his finest moments artistically. I would run, not walk, to your nearest
store and buy this. It is beautiful.

I'd be very interested in getting together a very complete list of what
sorts of equipment Lanois uses to get that incredible sound (besides a
great pair of ears).
I do know that in the past he has used an old C12 tube mic, an SM58 on
Bono (!), and uses those Korg SRV 3000 delays for front ends of his
guitars. Also, he has recorded some of his own stuff on an Akai
12-track, apparently the same kind as I am using.
He has really come a long way since those days when he used to record
his sisters band, Martha and the Muffins, in his mother's basement! I
still have that record somewhere...

In the first newsletter, Kenley Neufeld asked:
>Did he play anywhere else in the country on this tour with Emmylou?
Yes, Emmylou and Lanois and the band played here in Boston in November and
it was a spectacular show. They were originally scheduled to play the
Orpheum Theater, which is a mid-sized theater (1000 - 2000 seats? I'm
guessing). A few days before the show it was moved from the Orpheum to a
small club, the Paradise, because the ticket sales were poor. I was really
shocked by this. I thought that a lot of people in Boston would be eager to
see them.
Although it was a shame for them, it was a much better show for the people
who attended, since the setting was so much more intimate. The Paradise is
usually a standing-up-and-dancing type of club, but they put folding chairs
down on the floor ("cabaret-style seating") for EH and DL. My friend and I
got really lucky and managed to score seats directly in front of the stage.
I sat about 10 feet from EH and 15 feet from DL. What a great way to see a
performance like that!
They did most (maybe all) of the songs from Wrecking Ball. Midway through,
EH left the stage and DL did some of his own songs. I don't remember exactly
(I was kind of entranced by all this) but I think he did 'Marie Clair' from
Wynona and 'Where the Hawkwind Kills' from Acadie. Perhaps there was one
more. I also remember that EH joined them for 'Indian Red.'
In the review of the show the next day in the Boston paper, the reviewer
mentioned that DL had been unhappy with his performance of 'Hawkwind.' I
don't know why -- I was riveted. His guitar was really powerful live.
Anyway, sorry for going on so long! It was a great show. I hope lots of you
also got to see them.

Hi Daniel I live in Australia and work with a Female Singer called Wendy
Mathews.
Now Wendy has been a huge fan of yours for a long time.
She has been making records here for 5 years and does quite well with them.
I play bass for her and have been for most of that time.
Now she's due to make a CD soon and I would appreciate it if you would
consider producing her.
Please have a listen to her she has special qualities in her voice that
words cannnot explain.
By the way Wendy is from Canada too, though she now lives here in Australia.
please consider this.

In answer to Brian Cook's question, the song "Need Somebody" by Daniel
Lanois is found in Philip King's film "Daniel Lanois: Rocky World". This
is a 52 minute documentary available on VHS from Warner/Reprise 38341-3.
I features Lanois' own music, and some of his production work with U2,
Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, and The Neville Brothers. As Brian noted, it
was shot when "The Beauty of Wynona" was recorded.

Subject: DL concerts in California
The clubs here in California listed the shows in September and October as
"Daniel Lanois in Concert." No mention of Emmylou prior to showtime; it was
a pleasant surprise when she did come out and sing 4 or 5 songs with him.
Perhaps it was a pre-tour.
In case you are interested, he played the following venues
9/29/95 Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, CA 500 capacity
10/1/95 Coach House, San Juan Capistrano, CA 480 capacity
10/2/95 House of Blues, Los Angeles, CA small????
And then, Emmylou Harris with the Daniel Lanois Band (+ many others)
10/28/95 Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, CA 20k capacity
Maybe we will get lucky and they will come back through California as
Emmylou Harris in Concert.
