Is it true that Lanois produced some early Lone Justice stuff?
Kenley {hi!},
I don't remember if you listed Lanois on "Way Down Below Buffalo
Hell"--various artists compilation for Real World. His song is called
"454" and the title of the album is a line from that song.
Is there anyone out there that can translate the liner notes to "Cool Water"?
[That's all we need, another language to translate :) ]
Thanks for putting my silly note in the digest, I feel welcomed!

Over the past few years I've hunted every interview I could find on
Lanois looking for the secrets to his sounds and I think the thing that
he always tries to highlight is that anything goes as far as equipment is
concerned hence using SM58's as drum overheads and Bono's voice simply
because it was more convenient. I think the "Lanois sound" is about 99%
approach rather than gear.
However, one thing that shines through on the ELH record is the use of
LA2A type Valve compression and I remember seeing lots of LA2A's on a
couple of shots of Lanois over the years. It's really interesting the
amount of compression on the vocals of "Where will I be" which is almost
the same vocal sound as
"Learning to Crawl " , brutal but beautiful.
I love his "don't worry about mistakes, record the magic approach"
Listen to the bass track on 'Where will I be" , there's mistakes all over
it, notes missing etc but it is totally cool, smells of first take
adrenaline.
Regards,
Brian

Subject: Add to the discography!
I have an addition to the Lanois discography .... I found this item in a
store that sells a lot of promos from radio stations:
Still Water CD-5. Warner Pro-CD-3942. Three versions: Radio Edit (4:24),
Live (4:47), and LP version (4:27).
As you might guess there's absolutely nothing changed in the radio edit except
for the removal of a second or two of silence at the beginning and end.
This was also a 12-inch single for radio play, in the same sequence of songs.
KRLX 88.1 FM got a copy back in '89; I don't think it was ever played.

I am a great admirerer of Daniel Lanois, but scince I live in the rather
small and cold Northern European country called Norway, I have trouble
getting hold of other productions of him than Acadie an For the Beauty
of Wynona. I have ordered Cool Water, though it does not seem to arrive.
OOOPS! Now I see that my name is wrong: There is a default setting on
this computer that says: "Name: Bjørn Helge Jahnsen", and I can´t change
this setting. B.H. Jahnsen is not my name. My name is Dagfinn Karlsen.
What does "Acadie" mean? I know some French, and I checked with my
dictionary, but I can´t unravel the true meaning of the word. What does
it mean?
Thanks for this site, Mr. Neufeld!
God bless you all!

Just want to let you know I'm out there and that the void of Daniel
Lanois fans has not been filled. Its quite a lonely experience but one
well worth enjoying. Does anyone have the live album "Cool Water"?

What was this program? Has anyone else seen it? Does anyone have a tape? I'd
love to see it, or at least hear about it from anyone who's seen it.
Also, on another subject -- I stumbled across a promo CD for 'Wrecking Ball'
in a used record store the other day. It's called 'Building the Wrecking
Ball.' It has six songs from Wrecking Ball and interviews with EH and DL.
The interviews are interesting, but nothing really exceptional, I don't
think. I believe the interview segments are excerpted from the VH1 interview
some of you have seen. (The sleeve notes say "Interview was recorded in LA
on 7/11/95 with Anthony Decurtis, VH1 News.")
The CD does include a few seconds from a couple of their initial demo
recordings of some of the songs. It's really interesting to hear the
contrast between the initial demo and the finished version, especially on
'Deeper Well.' That song went through some dramatic changes by the time it
was finished. Unfortunately, these demo clips are very brief, so you don't
get to hear much.
I can tape this CD if anyone wants to hear the interviews. Send me mail. But
if you haven't heard 'Wrecking Ball' yet, go get it immediately. It's an
extraordinary record.

Subject: [Rocky World lyrics & possible Toronto show]
Here are the Lyrics to Rocky World. I thought I read that someone wanted to
get ahold of them.
For those people who live in the Toronto Hamilton area, I heard that Tom
Wilson is putting together a benefit show in Hamilton, and Daniel has signed
on to play.
Anyways, enjoy!!!
Rocky World - Daniel Lanois
My hands are wrapped in your raven hair
In the faded picture on the back stair
We were narrow, we were steady, trembling and ready
To give it Hell in this rocky world
You said do I look like I could be a strong mother
And raise the good side of a young daughter
In the hotel Shangri-La let me tell you
I've been thinking of her in this rocky world
Chicago is heavy, but I can't turn around
I'm smuggling that whiskey, every flesh and pound
Michigan I worry, and Susie I'm sorry
That I lost you out there in the rocky world
Would you build me a building a chapel up there
At the top of the hill in the still blue air
Near the weather vane, by the track and train
I'll be looking for you in the rocky world
She's turning twenty and out on the make
Pounding the blacktop with a habit to shake
She's looking for a manger in the eyes of a stranger
Down on the streets of a rocky world
Jenny has religion she sings in a church
She's made a decision to colour her hair
The Black man cut the sugar cane she watches the rain
In a building far from the rocky world
Yeah I'll tell you something I'll never forget
The sight of you in silhouette
Outside Sault Ste. Marie you really threw me
When you pulled me down to your rocky bed
In a crowded room I stood there empty
Looking for salvation and glory be
When a shot turned my head and I saw you instead
Walk into my rocky world

I travel frequently to France, and always make an effort to stop by the big
record
chain over there called FNAC (great selection, tres expensive!). There are
often
"European only" editions which feature different selections, track order,
special
packaging, etc. However, I checked out FtBoW and other than the cover, the song
titles are identical. The "American Edition" stamp is there to hide the
shocking
nudity featured in picture...how we are prudes over here :) The French edition
features the original picture intact, uncensored.
Does anybody have any details on the live album(s) listed on the Web site
discography?
Is this a bootleg, or is there an "official" live-album? I do have the Rocky
World
video on laserdisc, and it is worth having. Great sound, grainy picture
(perhaps to
be arty), but interesting versions of some Lanois songs.

Hello and Happy New Year to everyone on the list!
I've sent Kenley the lyrics I'd typed up - they'll be posted on the home
page at his convenience - _Please_ take a look at them as I'm sure there
are some I've gotten wrong, and there are some where I just can't make out
a word or phrase here or there. Maybe you hold the key to completing the
lyrics!!
I've basically got every English song on the two albums - I'll leave the
French to someone who actually knows the language :) (By the way - the
lyrics posted in the last digest were great! Now can you translate them
for us? :) )
Ant
[The lyrics are available on the web page. Also thanks to Dale Miller for e-mailing lyrics to me (in addition to Ant). Your contributions are very appreciated - Kenley]

Subject: Emmylou/Lanois on Letterman
Did anyone catch Emmylou on the Late Show with David Letterman a while back?
(maybe a month or two - right after the album came out, I think) Very very
nice! She sang "Where Will I Be" - I hadn't yet gotten the album when it
was on, but the performance finally convinced me to get it. Dan, Darryl
Johnson, and I'm guessing it was Brian Blade, backed her up. I didn't even
realize that it was Dan until they showed a closeup of him singing harmony
vocals. I was pretty excited because Dan had never been on Letterman's
show before, if I remember.
Did anyone see when he did Leno (The Tonight Show) when "For The
Beauty..." came out? He did "Indian Red" (wouldn't have been my first
choice, but...) but the real killer was that Leno introduced him as 'a
producer of such great albums by the Neville Brothers and _UB40_"... Geez
- it it any wonder I'm a Letterman watcher?
Anyone have tapes of either of these shows?

Ok, hello out there!
I'm 20 years old finnish male studying to be youth counselor in few years.
My first contact with Daniel Lanois was the music of U2... I always thought
that many of the good elements in the work that he had produced was because
his good taste and musicality. And so I had to buy Acadie...
Acadie is incredible collection of tastefully put together tracks. It's
moody and colourful, very much soul in it. For the beauty of Wynona is more
band oriented. And as Daniel noted his vocals are over earthly... Rocky World
video is very nice with strange colours and stuff.
But then by accident I discovered Cool Water and I couldn't believe it was
not bootleg... Could you please tell me everything you know about this live
recording? I don't know basically nothing about it. My dad translated that
german text inside the covers... but there is not so much information on it.
What are Daniels next projects?
I currently have quite many albums produced by him. Dylans Oh Mercy, Harris'
Wrecking Ball and Robbie Robertsons album. I love the first two of them.
What other records you would recommend?
I've always felt Daniels music very spiritual, do you know anything about
his beliefs/faith?
Thanks in advance,
Lauri
