Subject: U2/Eno album in spring '96
As most of you are probably aware, Eno is producing U2 in the studio for what
is supposed to be a more "rock-oriented" collection of work (as opposed to
the Passengers release), slated for a spring '96 release. I was wondering if
DL is going to be contributing anything towards this CD at all! Anybody
know?

They carry a lot of "alternative" (whatever that means) stuff including
King Crimson, Brain Eno, Roger Eno, etc. They also are the major
distributor for Real World Records (Peter Gabriel's World Music label) (and
where you can find Daniel Lanois on some of those compilations). The
prices are reasonable especially considering how difficult it is to find
some of those CDs.

Does anyone know when and if Daniel Lanois will be touring in
the Northwest(Seattle) anytime in the future?
I met with him this past fall in Seattle and he wasn't sure
where his tour was going to take him. Just curious if anyone

I'd just like to mention for those mentioning DL's early production work
that he also produced for Ian Tyson(yes, the country singer), 'The
Parachute Club', and Luba. These names must be familiar to any Canadians
out there. Also, someone else out there must know that song that The
Tragically Hip, Midnight Oil, Crash Vegas, and DL released during the
first "Another Roadside Attraction" tour.(My appologies to anyone outside
Canada, who should by no means be familiar with my ramblings about
Canadian bands(aside from Mid.Oil).) Someone please confirm this song...it
was a single.
Also, a question for Line (Aline, I presume),or any one else. DL sings
'I come from east of (????)'
I assume this is a town in Quebec...at first, I thought 'Cote du Nord'
but it sounds like it's a aboriginal word maybe (you know, like how
Toronto or Ontario aren't English nor French). Any ideas?
In my translating haste, I forgot a line in "O' Marie".

Hello, i just read that somes persons wanted to have the lyrics of DL's songs
and also that somes have problems with the french parts.
So i will do my modest contribution in sending the lyrics of one of my favorites,
Jolie Louise. Please note that there is some english words missing because in contradiction to a
lot of readers, it's the english parts i tend to have problems!
When i was not able to understand clearly (2 or 3 words) i put some question mark signs ???....
And by the way, someone send the lyrics of Marie and i think he was not sure of
the word after "On travaille au tabac....." The word is probably "hostie",
and i just found in my english-french dictionnary that in english the traduction
is "host", which is what we eat when make the communion at the church. If you are wondering
why he's saying this after "On travaille au tabac" (we work in the tobacco fields) is because
we (the french canadians) uses the words of the church when we are angry or in a bad mood about
something (some people uses them all time even when they are not angry anyway!)
So the explanation is that in the song the person working in the tobacco is not very happy
about the conditions of his job (he's also saying that he's working under the rain) and the nearest
traduction i can make is "We work in the tobacco...Dawm it!" (sorry, i don't really know how to
swear in english). This explanation was a bit long for just one word! But if someone wants
informations about any french words in one of DL's songs or maybe a traduction of all the french
parts, just email me or maybe send the question to the newsletter if its appropriate.

Actually, Best Buy is the ONLY place I've seen it here in Arizona - I
don't know if they have some sort of exclusive channel or what, but I've
seen at least one copy of the CD in about 4 Best Buy stores around the
city... I've just always been kind of 'afraid' to pick it up thinking it
would end up being some poor quality bootleg or something - that and it's
always priced at $18.99!!!

For those of you interested in hearing another artist's version of "Indian
Red," there is a compilation disc in stores - I don't remember the exact
name, but it has something to do with "Ben & Jerry" - the famed ice cream
duo. They've apparently put out a CD with some of their favorite cajun,
zydeco, etc. artists, and the first track is Dr. John's version of "Indian
Red"... Kind of interesting though I'm not a big fan of his music. I
haven't heard the original (Wild Tchoupitoulas) version - it's on my list
of things to do... :)
You can probably find the Ben & Jerry's CD in the World Music/Heritage
section of stores - It was on the listening post at Borders Books &
Music.. :)
Another question, just curious - I know that some of you are also on the
Peter Gabriel list and might know what I'm talking about, but How many
people on this list are *really* familiar with the so-called "world music"
scene? Lanois has done some work with various Real World artists, but -
and of course this is just my personal opinion - the biggest favor you
could do yourself is to explore the 'international' sections in music
stores - now of course, depending on where you're located geographically,
the word "international" takes on a completely different meaning, but
speaking from a personal standpoint, some of the most incredible music I've
ever heard comes from places I may never go to and is in a language I
might never understand...!

Okay one last post - Just a reminder to check out the lyrics on Kenley's
nifty Lanois home page - There are some 'blank spots' that you may be able
to fill in, i.e. words that I for some reason can't make out, or a
Canadian reference that I didn't catch or get correct, etc... I think it
would be neat if we could all get involved - no pressure, though... :)
Kenley - have there been many new subscriptions to the list? Could we get
a total count (so far) of members? Thanks!
Thanks also to Dale Miller for posting the English translations to "O
Marie" and "The Collection of Marie Claire" - It's possible that, like
Line said, translating to English could turn the song into something flat,
but I think that at least having the knowlege of what the song is about
(i.e. the tradition of the tobacco picking, or the thought process of the
trapper in "Maire Claire") kind of lets us non French speakers see the
song "in color" after listening to it for so long in 'black + white."
Though I appreciated and loved the songs as I knew them before the
translations, it certainly helped in "feeling" the song's meaning. Uh -
you know what I mean... :)

In response to some this weeks queries...
There are two places that I am aware of that you can send mail for DL. The first is the OPAL address in England which can be found in his CD's. The second is Capitol Records in Hollywood, CA. Apparently he is doing some consultant work for Capitol and checks the mail their regularly.
I have recently sent DL a letter and a copy of the Home Page and the first Digest. I also recieved at E-mail from his management company and they said DL was interested in doing something on the Web. Perhaps we will have some involvement from him in the future. Keep you fingers crossed.
The ACADIE Digest currently has 59 subscribers. Thanks to all of you for your wonderful contributions (lyrics, etc.) and comments in the digests. Keep it coming.
