Subject: Me & Lanois

Hi all,

I just would like to tell about how I came across mr Lanois...

Of course, (well, for Europeans, of course) I first came across him with the
"The Unforgettable Fire" album from U2 (still vinyl in those days). I first
saw the guy in the documentaire "the making of the Unforgettable Fire",
which still holds a special place in my video-collection (along with the
Rocky World one).

In the late eighties/early nineties we had a marvellous radio-programme on
national popular radio (Dutch Radio 3), called "twee meter de lucht in"
which was broadcasted every Tuesday for 2 hours during the day. This
programme always featured great stuff, which otherwise might not have gotten
too much radioplay; things that just aren't chart-material, but great
anyway. This is where I first heard "the Maker"... I heard it and I fell in
love! Afterwards the presenter said it was Daniel Lanois, making me quite
surprised, as I had no idea whatsoever that the guy actually did music himself!

>From that moment, I was completely enslaved to his music! (still am, as you
might have guessed)

On July 4th 1990 finally my dreams became true: Daniel was to play
Amsterdam! So I tood the afternoon off work, and went to Amsterdam with my
camera and pen and paper to get an autograph.

I got there and didn't have to wait long before the artists started to
arrive. And my knees went all shaky when I saw the guy himself! I was very,
very nervous indeed, but somehow managed to walk up to him and ask his
autograph... (I still keep that one framed; it says "to Marja much love Dan
Lanois" cute eh?) then I took a deep breath and for the first time in my
life I dared to ask any artist whether I could see the sound check. He
wasn't too keen, but as I told him I had nowhere to go until the gig was
starting (about 5 hours too early!), and I'm not from Amsterdam either... he
let me in! I sat on the floor, and he joined me not much later, introducing
me to Daryl Johnson. After we shook hands they all sat down, and watched the
set being put into place. They used the rhythm line for Indian Red to test
the sound, and soon Daryl and Daniel were singing that beautiful song right
next to me! The best experience ever!
Of course I had never heard the song then, but was very impressed indeed!

It turned out to be not so much a soundcheck, but more like a recording
session; tapes being re-wound and recorded all of the time. It was just one
perfect afternoon!
I noticed the door having a sign on it saying "no photographs", and spoke to
Daniel about it. he didn't know a thing about it, but soon investigated for
me. By the time I had dinner and returned for the gig the sign had
mysteriously disappeared!
but I still regret not being tough enough to do what he suggested: He asked
if (if it had not been allowed for some reason to take pictures during the
gig) it wasn't possible for me to come back the next day, and take them
during the day... aaarrghhh! I mean, how many times does a girl get such an
offer? But I only had had my job for a year or so then, and just wasn't sure
how my boss would react. (afterwards she told me "oh, you should've rung!" I
*hate* not doing so!) Some years after Mark Howard told me they had been
recording the whole day after the gig in that place... I was "kind of"
disappointed with myself even more then, but you can't bring back the past &
change it, can you?

So, the most wonderful gig ever... I took a lot of pictures and afterwards
met someone who had secretly recorded the gig. I bought a copy of his tape,
which isn't bad either!

Although I have seen Daniel all over the place now (Paris, London, Antwerp,
New Orleans), yes even during some musicians/family&close friends only party
at his own place, I've even stayed at his home, but this gig/whole day will
always be my best memory of him!

So, I hope not having bored anyone, but I really wanted to share this
wonderful day with you; fellow Lanois fans! (I don't know any around here,
not real ones anyway)

Love,
Marja

Hi folks,

just for the record, I thought it was worth mentioning that my friend
John LaBros, who hails from "east of Gatineau", thinks that Jean-Guy's
surname is "Thibeault-Leroux". For you American readers who wouldn't
have any way of knowing, in Quebec you are requuired by law (I believe)
to take both of your parents' surnames, and hyfinate them into your own.

And, just a further note on the origins of Acadie: it's true that most of
the land was in Nova Scotia, and that great numbers of Acadians were
expelled in the most shameful act of Maritime history. However, some
years later many started to trickle back from the US, and today Acadian
music, culture and its population are very strong, particularly in New
Brunswick.

Salut,

Rob Currie

Hello!
I think that some of you, specially Joseph and Antonio :))) , will
be happy if I write for you the first part of «Under a stormy sky».

He Bebe, danse avec moi
Ce soir on «fais dodo»
Danse avec moi, Bebe, oui
Under the stormy sky

Popa y a vendu la terre
La terre et la vache
Danse avec moi, Bebe, oui
Under the stormy sky

Jean-Paul, y joue le violon
(???) l accordeon
Danse avec moi, Bebe
On a stormy night

And here is the translation:

Hey Baby, dance with me
Tonight there is a «fais dodo»
Dance with me Baby, yes
Under the stormy sky

Daddy has sold the land
The land and the cow
Dance with me Baby, yes
Under the stormy sky

Jean-Paul plays the violin
(???) the accordion
Dance with me Baby
On a stormy night

Voila! I explained what is a «Fais dodo» in digest number 5. I am
really sorry, but I donąt know how to transfer the accents on french
words (neither on my last name) through the Net and even the
apostrophes I type donąt travel the Net, so I just skipped some of
them. Au revoir!

Hi there!
I had the opportunity to live in the "Ottawa valley" for about a year.
I figure I'll table this one for anyone interested. There is a town "East of
Gatineau" (also in Quebec) called Thurso (home town of hockey star Guy Lafleur).
I remembered this because the smell of the town's main industry, a PULP MILL,
used to float over the Ottawa river on windy days (to the Ontario side), and
was needless to say, pretty harsh. Anyhow, maybe Thurso is the town "East of
Gatineau" Daniel was referring to. Anyone...,Anyone...,Anyone....

Subject: James Joyce = Daniel Lanois

Hi everyone! Is it just me or are there just many uncanny similarities
between James Joyce and Daniel Lanois?

        JAMES JOYCE DANIEL LANOIS

1. Is an Irishman. 1. Works with Irishmen.
                                            (I won't bother saying who.)

2. Made a self-imposed exile and 2. Made a career out of music and
traveled throughout Europe. has to travel throughout Europe
(and other parts of the world).

3. Themes often deal with art, 3. Themes are executed artistically
culture, sexuality, and and often deal with culture,
    spirituality. sexuality, and spirituality.

4. Responsible for being the father 4. Responsible for being one of the
of modern literature. best producers in modern music.

5. Wrote three novels: "Portrait 5. Third album is anxiously being
of an Artist As a Young Man," awaited: "Acadie," "For the Beauty
"Ulysses," and "Finnegan's Wake." of Wynona" and ??????????.

6. Wrote "Finnegan's Wake" in a 6. Wrote songs in common-speaking
language scholars are trying to French which internet fans are
    decipher. trying to decipher.

Reincarnation? Blood brothers? hmmmm.

(Hope you all enjoyed this, as you can tell, I have too much time on my
hands. :) By the way, I stole the comparison idea from reading one too
many Entertainment Weekly magazines. :) )

Anyhow, I did want to suggest something: maybe we should start like a
dictionary / companion book that would help explain the terminology and
allusions that Lanois uses. For example, the word "Acadie." I think it
might be good for "future reference" (don't ask what I mean, I don't know
:) ). I was just thinking that "Ulysses" by Joyce is a difficult book and
scholars often have a reference book to explain certain Irish points of
reference. It might be helpful for Lanois's references and it looks like
there are a lot of Canadians that could help us with the locale!

I have stumbled in to this site on a very quiet, rainy evening in Los Angeles and I'm rather pleased to find it as I'm quite fond of DL's work as solo artist and collaborator.
I have a CD that I haven't seen listed in any discography--Trip--. I believe this was released only to the film industry as a way to possibly generate some soundtrack work.
It contains some bits and pieces of material from Acadie and Wynonna. Their is a public radio station called KCRW that is pretty enthusiastic about DL and they offered it as a premium for membership.
Does anyone know if he has another album in the works or heard plans of what he will do after the tour with Emylou?
KCRW has a web site---www.kcrw.org--- There is an interview and performance that can be downloaded.

>Anyway, perhaps someone can shed light on this: What aspect of the
>recordings that Lanois and Eno have co-produced belong to which man?

This is an interesting question - I've often wondered about this, myself.
Knowing both Eno and Lanois' solo work definitely helps in picking stuff
out of albums like "The Joshua Tree," but I think it's interesting how all
of the artists in the "pack" (Eno, Lanois, U2, Robbie Robertson, et. al.)
have been influenced by each other that it makes it hard sometimes to
differentiate! Listening to Robertson's "Music for the Native Americans,"
(great, great album, by the way) it seems almost impossible that Dan
wasn't involved because it just has that 'feeling.' Oddly enough, Bill
Dillon WAS involved - ... And more recently, the "Passengers" album (Eno
and U2 - another great one, BTW) has definite touches of 'Lanois-ness' in
my opinion.

What makes it all the more incredible, though, is that all of these
artists have solo stuff that _IS their own_ - and doesn't sound like any
others!

Great list! I'm glad to see that others are also listening to this music
as I've gotten a few private responses also!

People who are a bit apprehensive about spending money on something
they're not sure they'll like might try some of the many world music
samplers out...

Trance Planet from Triloka Records is a _very_ good compilation featuring
Nusrat, Rossy, Cesaria Evora, the Tahitian Choir, + many more.

Speaking of Nusrat - And Lanois - I heard a LONG time ago on the Peter
Gabriel list that Dan was producing some stuff by Nusrat. Had anyone heard
anything about this? I was in Best Buy yesterday and noticed that Nusrat
has a "new" album out in which he "blends traditional singing with
innovative _electronic voices_" Yikes! It wasn't on any major label, and
actually, it looked a bit suspicious. Maybe I'm just still mourning the
fact that he's worked with Eddie Vedder recently... :)

[come now Ant, have you heard the Vedder/Nusrat tunes? (this is said in a most
positive way). They actually blend together quite nicely. For those of you
unaware, this is on the Dead Man Walking soundtrack. -- Kenley]

For anyone into mambo sounds, there's a comp out called "Big Noise" on
Hannibal Records that has a MAMBO remix of a Nusrat song!! It sounds like
it would never work, but actually it sounds great! Another _very_ good album.

Sorry for getting off track :) - Ant

Subject: DL/Emmylou article in 2/96 Mix Magazine

There is an article about Daniel Lanois and Emmylou Harris, about the making
of "Wrecking Ball", of course, in the new issue of Mix, a recording
engineering trade magazine. In it, Emmylou Harris says, "I was asked by the
record company if there was anyone I would like to work with, if I could work
with anybody. I immediately said, 'Daniel'. Everything I heard that touched
me and moved me musically in the last few years has been something that he
has been involved with." It just so happened that Lanois was in between
projects and eager to collaborate with Harris.----

For you recording enthusiasts and engineers out there, it says that "Wrecking
Ball" was recorded at 15 ips on Ampex tape with Dolby A, which Lanois says is
a "very musical" format (note: many engineers feel that recording at 15 ips
instead of 30 ips makes the bottom end rounder and is perceived as being
'warmer'), and then printed a lot of low end information to tape, often
adding 60 hz in great quantities and printing to tape at high levels to get
natural tape compression and to get as much bottom as possible. Emmylou
Harris' vocals were recorded with an old Sony C-37A tube mic (note: again,
used to obtain a rich, warm sound -- vintage tube microphones tend to color
the sound in a very warm manner which is generally considered very pleasing
to the ear; these mics are unfortunately also VERY expensive, often on the
order of several thousand dollars). The vocals were usually done very late
at night (as if you couldn't tell :) ). The whole album was done live,
with a lot of the performers playing very close together, with a minimum of
overdubs, to try and capture the simplicity of the emotional impact.

"I think there is a character, or personality, that rings through the whole
record that I like quite a bit," Lanois says. "Whatever atmospherics this
record has, it just got through the initial raw performance. There are not a
great deal of overdubs or keyboard atmospherics on this record. Emmy is
singing live off of the floor, by-and-large. There is an urgency that you
get out of that setting that you wouldn't otherwise get with overdubs."
(Very true, Mr. Lanois!) "Bleeding into the microphones was kind of
encouraged on this record." Harris adds. "With that, I think you get
another participant on the track, which is the room and the energy and the
performance. It's an ambience that you can only get going with that live
situation."

I would also like to add that a couple of years ago, Mix Magazine had a poll
of various recording engineers and producers, and DL was polled as being the
best producer currently working.

Hi all,

I did a Web search to try to find Cool Water and some other things, and came
across one place that claims to carry Cool Water. They're called CD
Connection. The URL is:

        http://ftp.cdconnection.com

Supposedly you can download their catalog from the Web page, but I had some
technical problems and never actually got the catalog. You can order from
them on-line by dialing directly into their order system. The dial-in number
is (418) 985-8982. I just placed the order the other day, so it's anyone's
guess whether the CD will every actually come. It's worth a try, though. I
really, really want to have it.

By the way, does anyone know how to get the Rocky World video? I tried
ordering that from another place that claims to carry it and they eventually
notified me they couldn't get it any more. Alas.

Hi. This is Dale. I'd like to thank everyone at once for solving all of
my "odds and ends". I don't know how I let 'Gatineau' slip by. Also,
j'aimerai remercier Line and Daniel...ca fait longtemps, pour moi, penser
en francais!!! (even now, my written French is terrible!) (I grew up in
a French community, but it's been some time since I've worked with French)

I'm still interested in setting up some kind of video/audio exchange
...I'd like to see some different interviews, hear some different music,
etc of DL. Not to take up too much more space...to Antonio Abeyta, I
hear you loud and clear on what you said about 'World Music". The folk
festival up here usually brings in some amazing performers from around
the globe...unaltered, in the true state. And then the commercial 'World'
acts come along and butcher whatever the original performers did. My
appologies to anyone into this hybrid stuff.
