Dear Lanois fans,
I am sorry about my unbridled and incoherent enthusiasm last time I
wrote to ACADIE. I really could not help it. I've got a couple of
questions. Does anyone know if DL is planning on playing at the Tibet
House thing at Carnegie Hall. I know ELH will be their, and I assume he'll
play but I'm not sure. Also, I know that Malcom Burn has done some
independant recording. Does anyone have any? what is it like? I have
heard from a friend that his solo music is more jazz style. By the way I
appreciate those of you who brought in other music to the page. While DL
is working on another album it is helpful to learn about other music. I
also really like the idea of some sort of trading system to get his music
from each other. I have a tape called "Cool World" (not the soundtrack)
from the Kingsway Studio manager Karen Brady, from down in New Orleans. I
don't know much about it, but is really good. The live recording
complement his rawness, even amplifying it some ways.
yours deeply,

Subject: update on Daniel and Emmylou
I just got off the phone with a family member who is at this very moment is
auditioning for Emmylou Harris' band in Nashville. Apparently she is gearing
up for a 4 month tour to start in March. She needs a guitarist because Daniel
Lanois will NOT be touring with her. FYI...Darryl Johnson and Brady Blade
will be in the band. In regards to her performances in NYC in February, it is
uncertain whether DL will be playing with her (because of this audition). I
may know more by next week. EH is actually doing two shows, the Tibeten
Benefit (19th) and a FREE concert at the World Trade Center (20th) in New York City.
Now, for the Daniel Lanois update. Apparently he is working a movie soundtrack with
Darryl and Mark Howard at his new studio in Oxnard, California. For those of
you who don't know, Oxnard is about 45 minutes north of Los Angeles on the
coast. Hope this excites some people.

Subject: Lanois on Other's Recordings
Hello
Just a quick note to say I was reading the Georgia Strait here in Vancouver,
a weekly entertainment paper, in which the local music critic reviews a
record by a Canadian Bob Wiseman, who is by the way and amazing keyboardist
and songwriter. Bobby used to play for another favorite band of mine called
Blue Rodeo (little plug for them). Anyway, Bob was invited a whole family
of artists (27 in total) to play on his record including Daniel Lanois!
The album is called 'Accidentally Acquired Beliefs' and I believe is
recorded in Hamilton Ontario, Daniel's old stomping ground. The reviewer
says the album "sounds like a cruise down (Toronto's) trendy Queen Street
strip during the summer: elements of reggae, electropop, klezmer music, and
street-corner busking . . . ."
I don't know the extent to which Daniel Lanois plays on the album, but
perhaps I'll buy it soon and review it for Acadie subscribers sometime soon!
Cheers!

Hello,
I am as well a huge fan of Daniel Lanois and his work. I have found
the lyrics in Death of a Train hard to figure out as well. However, I
did notice that you wrote "Been 20 years on that Sioux? line" I
believe that Daniel Lanois was refering to the railway in the Canadian
town "Sault Ste. Marie". Up here we refer to Sault Ste. Marie as "The
Soo". Been 20 years on that Sault line...
hope that helps

Subject: Lanois Live
Greetings again.
I just wanted to share how I discovered DL's music.
Way back in 1989 I was dating a drama major (big mistake) and I wanted
to impress her so I sprung for two tickets to the Stratford festival
(Stratford, Ontario). There was a tent play called Romeo and Julliette..
it was the Shakespearean play re-done in a canadian style. Romeo's family
were English speaking and Juliet's family was French (and did their parts
in French), this all dressed in modern day clothes. It was excellent...
Anyways, it was during the intermission, standing outside this tent,
onthe edge of a large forest, a full moon and cleary starry sky and this
music came on. I was entranced by it. The mood it set was unbelievable.
It felt so good, so mellow and peaceful. I asked a stage hand what the
music was and he told me. I was a little shocked. Lanois had just
released his record and I had seen the single "Jolie Louise" on Much
Music a number of times and wasn't really impressed by it, assuming that
the other songs on the album were similiar. After hearing the other
tracks at this play I ran out the next morning and picked up a copy and
listened to it all day. I listen to that album at least once a week...(as
well as Cool Water)..... I have been a BIG fan ever since.I have
everything he has worked on..... Sorry for the run-on folks.. it was a
story that had to be told.
Later.

If you havve Cool Water, listen track 9 and let me know if you are
familiar with any other musicians that play this type of music.
For you poor souls who haven't got a copy of it yet, riish Melody is a
mournful guitar dirg, traditional irish style... can anyone recommend
something like it??
Kenley??? you're the expert..... :)

Subject: 'Supply house' proposal
Hi, this is -----. I have received a request from Shu-Shu Loh to see if I
could start a 'supply house' for various DL audio/video oddities. I'm
not sure if people are willing to send mail to Canada...I don't think
it's too expensive, depending on the country of origin. Anyway, here's
my offer...if you send me something I'll send you something. To start,
I'll send this video 'documentary' on DL in return for anything sent my
way. From there on, I'll see what I can work out for requests for
specific material...if you don't have anything to trade, we should be
able to work out pricier postage. (The rates here are fairly low)
The other issue is of trust. And for that, I don't really have any
ideas. I can offer my word, but that isn't too powerful on a computer
screen. I'd appreciate any feedback on this proposal. Feel free to send
ideas to me...just use my address above. For those eager to start
sending mail, here's my mail address.
[removed at the request of the author]
Please give me a bit of time to copy video tapes as I don't have two
VCR's at home.
Once again, this is an offer open to suggestions.

Regarding recent questions regarding DL and M+M:
(1) No, Daniel did not work on "Echo Beach" (or its album "Metro Music").
(2) The first M+M album on which he worked was their third, "This is the Ice
Age", which is a *great* album. A fine example of DL's production skills.
(3) Daniel also worked on 2 more M+M albums: "Danseparc" and "Mystery Walk".
(4) There is a rumor that Daniel recorded a live M+M performance in Toronto
around 1992 but the tapes were lost.

Have you seen the in depth interview he did on Mix magazine in ? NOV 1993
At his concert in London with ELH recently he did "Goin Back To,Africa"
by the Meters (one of my favourite bands) and he funked the joint down.
He is bloody amazing!
I'll like to subscribe to the newsletter? What do I do?
Can you tell me where to find a recording of the Mandela song and also
the track-
Bella Bonne et Teste??? form the Rocky World vid?
Please get in touch Thanks

Subject: Surnames in Quebec
Hi Kenley, Hi everybody,
To reply to R. Currie, in Quebec we are not required by law to take
both our parents surnames, otherwise my name would be
Forest-Lariviere (yes, yes, ancestors from Acadie). It is possible
to do so, but it is recent. It would have been an anachronism to
give such a surname to Jean-Guy.
Please, please, always leave an email address, sometimes there is
so many things I would like to answer when you are questioning about
Quebec and french lyrics (and not-so-french lyrics!) and Acadie, but
I donąt want to bore anyone or take too much space here.
Shu-Shu, I just find in my french-english dictionnary the meaning
of the word decipher...we have opposite problem. If you want to
know more about our «dialect!!!», do not hesitate to contact me.
For those of you who want to know more about Acadie history:

Great! thanks for the translation! :) In the liner notes for this song,
Dan mentions that his mothers nickname was "Bette," so I'm pretty sure
that instead of 'Hey Baby', it's 'Hey Bette' - great song though - simple
and spirited...

This sounds interesting - I remember how the beginning and end music parts
of "Beatrice" were used in the trailers for "A Perfect World" - the Kevin
Costner/Clint Eastwood movie a few years ago - it was very fitting, though
wasn't used in the actual movie... I think a lot of his music could be
used very well in 'the movies' - anybody know of any others?

Once again I'd suggest Best Buy if there is one near you - Though I got
mine from a local music store, I've pretty much _always_ seen it at any
Best Buy... I'm not getting paid for this promotion - really :)

Actually, It was quite funny as when I read this I had just come home from
Tower Records where they played the entire album over the store sound
system :) Anyway, yes, I agree that the songs aren't entirely bad -
actually I really liked the album as a whole...
I guess what I'm afraid of, though, is that Nusrat is kind of turning into
a novelty in the music world - kind of like the "Chant" cds, or other
short lived phenomenon. His music (heck, _any_ music) deserves much more
than that, and I'm especially close to his music so I guess I'm a little
defensive :) Current articles in Rolling Stone have just made me
extremely nervous that this may be happening.
Nusrat's new album was reviewed in the new RS, (surprise, surprise) and
Michael Brook produced it - Maybe Lanois makes an appearance? I haven't
seen it in stores yet, otherwise I'd have it :)

I agree that 90 percent of the supposedly 'world' music acts are anything
but good 'world' music (Johnny Clegg? Outback? Ugh!) but I think that there
_are_ some interesting collaborations out there. Most of them are
'authentic' musicians who have taken western music as an influence or
worked with more western musicians. I think these works could be
categorized as completely separate from the music mentioned above.
Geoffrey Oryema's "Beat the Border" album on RealWorld has done this very
well (Brian Eno/Bob Ezrin work on it) as well as the Nusrat/Michael Brook
collaboration(s) mentioned in a previous post.
I guess it completely depends on your preferences - I enjoy 'true' world
music very much, but I think there _is_ space for experiment. I think
you'd agree that doing it tastefully is where many musicians stumble,
though... :)
