While I agree that there is an "authenticism" in "real" world music of
indigenous cultures which is interesting and important, to deny the melding
of indigenous music with Western music or any other kind of music is to
slowly suffocate it, and then lock it in a museum. All music needs to evolve
and breathe and grow. Like any other kind of music, the blending of Western
and "traditional" music will sometimes be transcendental, and other times,
sound terrible. Few people will deny that DL or many other artists
mentioned on this newsgroup do not combine various elements in exciting new
ways.

Slightly off subject, so I'll keep it brief -- I am a member of Los Angeles
Friends of Tibet and would be interested in, if there is interest, having a
benefit show for Tibetans here in LA, possibly at the House of Blues (owner
is a big Tibetan supporter). Let me know! Also, any more information about
the NYC Tibetan Benefits would be greatly appreciated -- you may email me w/
this if you wish!

I believe it is called "Golden Dream", a wonderful tune indeed!

>Bella Bonne et Teste??? form the Rocky World vid?
"Elle est bonne et Belle" is on the "Lotta Love to Give" cd single. "Golden
Dream" was on the list for recording the "For the Beauty of Wynona" cd, I
think, but didn't make it. I don't know if it appeared on any other b-side
(maybe?). I think it might be best to just keep playing the live version, as
that may be the only chance of hearing it!

The Calendar section of the L.A. Times for 2/11 states that the second
Luscious Jackson CD is going to be produced by none other than Daniel Lanois.
I actually thought they had some interesting ideas on their first CD, so it
just may sound cool with this pairing!

Hi ya everyone!

I'm enjoying everyone's comments! I also adore those stories of how
everyone got into Daniel Lanois' music. It's like we people here in
Earthquake country, sharing the "where were you when it hit" stories. :)

Carsten asked if there is anyone else that makes music like "Irish Melody."
Well, being an amateur Celtoid, I can recommend a few. First, let me
interpret "Irish Melody." Really, there is no one else that plays guitar
like Daniel Lanois. That piece is a guitar piece that carries a melody
that can be found in Irish music. (excuse the basic boring info--I have a
point coming up) So if you are asking for music that carries Irish melody,
then you can find that in Celtic music; I think most of that melody is
carried out through the fiddle/violin or flute (some say accordion but that
takes awhile to get used to). If you want specific recommendations,
contact me.

On the other hand, if you are asking if there is guitar playing that comes
close to rich melodies, then Mr. Lefty--Jimi Hendrix is the man. But you
probably know that. I would also recommend what Ant had recommended
before, Robbie Robertson's Red Road Ensemble. Other than that, the next
closest thing I can think of is The Devlins, an Irish guitar band that was
produced by Malcolm Burn. I can't think of any true guitar focused artists
like Lanois (unless Mark Knopfler but he has his own style, no?). I've
also been wanting to track down similar artists. It's kind of a relief not
to find any because I certainly wouldn't want any waterdowned, second-rate
wannabe. :)

And sincere apologizes to Line. I believe I used the word "decipher"
before. Some people don't learn their lesson until the second time around.
Sorry about that!

Yours truly, Shu-Shu. <"yun@alumni.caltech.edu.">

Here it is from the Calender section of the L.A. Times, Sunday, February
11. 1996, and I quote:
"LUSCIOUS JACKSON is set to start its second album, with DANIEL
        LANOIS producing. . ."
And that, my friends, is the end of the sentence and paragraph. What do
you all think?

grateful...

[I don't remember who told me about the promo CD's listed in my discography
or where he/she got them. I assume you are a member of the group so maybe
you can answer Carston's questions. muchos gracias....Kenley]

Hi! I'm a French Canadian and I've just read "The Collection of
Marie-Claire"'s lyrics. There are some corrections that I'd like to
give to you, those will be in «».

- Marie-Claire, j'ai marché «toute» la soirée
- Ton portrait est toujours «près d'mon» coeur
- «J'veux te dire» que je t'ai rêvé tout l'été ("J'étais à dire que..."
is proper French but "Je t'a dire" can't be said)
- Marie-Claire s'il-te-plait, «n'aie» pas peur ("n'aie" is to have
instead of "n'est" wich is to be)
- Marie-Claire, it's no good «la vie d'une» danceuse ("bidoune" is not a
word)
- «Oublie-la» Montréal, la vieille ville

I think this is it. For the moment I don't have Lanois' first album so
I can't see if there are corrections to do with "O Marie" and "Jolie
Louise", but I'll try to get it soon. Finally, I'm sorry for my
English, there is still many work to do with it. Thank you!

Salut,

Oui, Marja, in «Under a stormy sky» I hear "La belle", but I'm not
sure DL says "la belle accordeon" because belle is a feminine
adjective and accordeon is a masculine name. In french, adjectives
agree with the noun they qualify. It could also be "La Belle,
l'accordeon" then in that case the comma represents the verb plays.

But who knows what Daniel remembers from those french grammar
rules...and who cares? I think he just says it the way he feels it and
that makes the way he sings more charming.

I have to say it: ce gars-la chante avec ses tripes, c'est rare et ca
fait du bien a entendre et si en plus c'est en francais, alors c'est
tout simplement envoutant. Could be translated by: what he sings
doesn't seem to come from his heart, but from even deeper, it's rare
and good, and if in addition it's in french, then it's
simply...delightful?

A bientot!
