Subject: Lanois
Is this for the news letter- hope so. Had the great fortune of seeing Lanois
quite a bit here in N.Y.C. I was at the two FREE gigs (Tower records with ELH
and the World Trade Center Garden) also saw the great Beacon show. He has
also been hanging around Chelsea Guitars in Manhattan picking up new gear
etc. The shows were great- he even hung out after to sign autos. Agree with
Kelly(?)on the great translation of "Collection". His effect rig at Tower was
as follows: Ibanez TS-9, Boss DD-5, Demeter Tremulator, and I think an
Experience pedal through a Vox AC-30 Top Boost (vintage).

Hi again. I'm also looking for a drummer and bassist in the N.Y. area who are
influenced by Lanois, Ron Sexsmith, Richard Thompson, Joe Henry, to work on
original material that has label interest. E-mail me at CCM 5@aol.com

Subject: Dream Collaberations
I've been finding the conversations about dream collaberations between DL and
other bands quite interesting. I have to admit I could not imagine a teaming
of DL and Rush, but then again I can't imagine what a DL / Luscious Jackson
collaberation will end up sounding like either...I'm more than just a little
intrigued.
Last summer, I had the opportunity to go to the Kumbaya Festival in Toronto.
The idea (courtesy of the hard work and master planning of Molly Johnson)
behind the festival is to get a variety of Canadian talent together and mix
up the pairings in the hope of getting some interesting results...all to
benefit AIDS research / care. DL played a set with Sarah McLachlan. The
results, although not highly rehearsed, were very interesting and I would
love to see some further collaberation on that front. Anyone else agree?

Subject: Last Temptation of Christ
Actually, I am sitting here with the soundtrack to The Last
Temptation of Christ, also known as Peter Gabriel's "Passion" album, and
there are no credits mentioning Daniel Lanois, unfortunately. However, as
mentioned in an earlier edition, he did work on the soundtrack to "Birdy"
with Gabriel (I think that was mentioned here somewhere, nevertheless, i
own it and its incredible, of course). As the liner notes to "Passion"
state, it was produced by Gabriel, and engineered by David Bottrill. David
Sanctious makes several appearances, as well as many others, but
unfortunately no DL. i have always wondered why. Anyway, it is an
incredible album.
I also wanted to say how much i enjoy the newsletter and I am
completely envious of those of you who actually got to see DL live, and the
few who met him! He is my idol, as cheesy as that sounds, as a producer and
musician. It's really nice to know he is human to. It's also really nice to
see feedback from people who can be down to earth and respectful about his
work. Thanks again.
-Holly

Last week I got see EMH perform in Melbourne, Australia, great show. I
couldn't help hoping from reading this newsgroup that DL would come out
on stage towards the end of the show but ho hum, it was not to be. It
was great to hear EMH do "The Maker" & "Indian Red".
I must say Daryl J. stole the show for me, what a vibe!!!
Here's a DL production suggestion, how about DL with Joni Mitchell or
DL with PJ Harvey, now that would be interesting.
Regards,
Brian

Wasn't the Margaritaville bar then just called Storyville: what more reason
does one need? It might have been based on whatever theme is used in the
songs on the album: unfortunately I still don't have it! (I'll get it soon
Line: I promise!)
I mean: you *are* aware of what Storyville was all about?
If not: let a totally European fill you in... it was New Orleans' red light
district back in the good old days of Louis Armstrong, and way before that.
It is the cradle of many good jazz musicians and music, so it would be a
very nice theme for any album having the New Orleans atmosphere in it!
Unfortunately nowadays the neighbourhood of Storyville is a *very* bad one:
avoid at all times, there's nothing left of what it once was, and only if
you have a certain death-wish: go there!
That's the story of storyville...
Hope I've *not* been raving on about something *nobody* is at all interested
in and I'll just go off to finally buy that album!
Greetings,
Marja

We have an old cassette version of the Lanois\Gabriel collaboration for
the Birdy soundtrack, which BTW, has a real Lanoisian touch. In fact
some of the material seems like doodling for what Gabriel later
recorded. Also, Emmylou Harris has been confirmed for the Telluride
Bluegrass Festival in June (yahoo!!). I too would be interested in any
bootleg recordings from Lanois. Sorry for the brief message,... it's finals
week.

Dear folks,
I have just bought the Ron Sexmith's record and it is pretty good.
For those of you who prefer the folky side of our Man from Gatineau..this
is a must (at least listen).
The Michael Froom production works wonders as DL did for ELH.
DL himself produced track thirteen!(value for $) with his characteristic
garnishings/trimmings/flavours and textures.
DL also did all the ....wait for it....
photography.
Talented???- quite possibly.

I was skimming through the Steve Earle group and someone said that they
have a footage of Earle with Harris joined with Daniel Lanois (the guy
wrote down "Anwar", hahahahaha). You might want to contact that group for
it. This is the e-mail address for the group. The one
sherperding everyone is name Lisa.
Dale brought up an interesting point about country music. (No, I don't
think you're a poseur.) There has been a misconception going on with
country music. I've only lately discovered this especially after Earle's
new album. Or maybe it's this new wave of country singer-songwriters. A
lot of blues, country, and folk, rock and pop has been overlapping each
other making for interesting "roots" music. What's my point? [1] DL
producing Emmylou is really not a big leap--daring but not unnatural and
[2] this is definitely a relatively undiscovered source to dig through for
great music!

Please note that there is a Lanois solo song titled "454" on the album
"Jam Nation" on the Real World label. I noticed this is not in your
list. It's a pretty good tune as are all Lanois tunes.

Glad you liked them - one more Big Head Todd fan! :)
BTW - I just found that Chris Whitley contributed to Cassandra Wilson's
two most recent albums, "Blue Light Till Dawn" and "New Moon Daughter" (I
think). She's a great jazz singer known for blending jazz vocals and
'not-so-jazz' music arrangements - hence the Chris Whitley. :) She also
does a nice version of U2's "Love Is Blindness" on the latter above
mentioned album...

I've always kinda wondered if Dan had something to do with this
soundtrack, but I had pretty much ruled it out until someone else brought
it up :) Agreed that it is an incredible album - I honestly listen to
it at least once a week - very, very strong music, especially the title
track with Nusrat!
Obviously Dan's influence on PG is there, but I think it might have
sounded "more" like Dan if he had actually had a hand in it.
EVERYONE should have this album! :) Plus, seeing the movie makes the
music easier to 'understand', in my opinion.
