[][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Subject: Current endeavors of DL
From: Kenley -Since February Daniel has been producing the new Luscious Jackson album on Grand Royal/Capitol which is to release this Fall. -Daniel has scored a new movie called Slingblade which will release this November through Miramax Films. The film is written and directed by Billy Bob Thronton who is also the lead actor. Billy is mostly known for his thriller "One False Move" which he also wrote, 'stared-in' and directed. Daniel will be completing the score to release as a mostly instrumental sound track either on Island or Warner Bros. Records. This movie was produced by the Shooting Gallery out of New York. -He also contributed a few instrumental cues to a Canadian Film called "Sweet Angel Mine" produced by Hand Made. -Daniel has helped Bob Dylan produce a song- "Blue Eyed Jane"- on his Jimmy Rogers Tribute album on Egyptian Records Bob's label through Sony. -Last Fall he produced the John Lennon Song 'Mind Games" with Sinead O'Connor on vocals for the upcoming John Lennon Tribute on Capitol -On a very interesting note he has worked up two collaborations with Ani DiFranco as part of the Erotica (Spoken Word/musical journey) to release on Warner Bros. in the new year. Daniel created the musical bed and Ani the lyrics - something to look forward to [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Wed, 24 Jul 1996 21:09:36 -0400 From: Gwen ServiesSubject: DL Fan Club? Does anyone know if a DL Fan Club exists? In my opinion, one of the greatest advantages of fan club membership is the opportunity for advanced ticket sales, usually for excellent seats. Maybe someone out there is interested in starting up a fan club........???? I've got, on video tape, a program from the Swedish national TV with DL from 1990 or 1991 (I'm not quite sure about the year) and it is *great*. He played Sweden on his Acadie-tour. Lanois is sitting there with his dobro (guitar made of steel) and he actually plays a song live, alone, during the course of the interview! The song did not turn up on the Wynona album (I thought it would) but eventually on EH's Wrecking Ball. The song was Black Hawk (and the White Winged Dove). Can you imagine? The whole song live, alone before a TV camera - not many people would do a thing like that! Let me know if you want a copy of the song, it's quite good. I can send you a cassette tape or a video tape (PAL - European standard). Send me a mail if you're interested! (hollen@stacken.ct.se) He talks about the cooperation with U2, Dylan, and Robbie Robertson. He mentions that Robbie R is an excellent story teller, with lots of tales from all his years on the road. Included in the program are some Lanois-videos: The Maker, Still Water and Jolie Louise. Have you seen them? They are quite good, much better than the average pop video crap that we usually get to see on MTV. He also says that he, in the future, will include some *humour* in his songs! Well, it certainly did not appear on the Wynona album... or did I miss it? He is a great musician our DL, but a great humorist in his songs..? Bye! Burke II" <73513.3043@compuserve.com> Subject: Ted Hawkins & Lanois radio show I was recently reminded of a record that I find to have a Lanois flavor by a man that died around Christmas, 1994. His name is Ted Hawkins and he released an album titled "The Next Hundred Years" on DGC. It is brilliant. I can't put my finger on why it is so similar to Lanois' work, it is not particularly atmospheric or effect laden. There is something beautiful about the simplicity of it. It may be the simplicity that I find similar in the two. I think that is part of what makes DLs work so strong; that most of it is very simple. There may be a ton of EQ or reverb on something, but the tone that is affected is simple and pure. There maybe exotic imagery, but the subject matter is straight foreword. I'm getting a bit carried away with all of this. My point is that Ted Hawkins' record is really quite nice. One piece that does sound like something that could be on Acadie is a song called Biloxi. Ted has an amazing voice. The first four words he sings on the record are worth the trip to the record store alone. Daniel Lanois will be a guest DJ on KCRW 89.9 in Santa Monica, Ca. Aug. 8th (I think) while the regular host is vacationing. It is a three hour program that he will exclusively program and host. I'm curious about his taste in music, this should be telling. I was thinking of picking up the "Rocky World" video, which is now on sale through CD Now. Could you tell me about it. I saw the track listing on your fine Lanois web page, but was wondering how much of it is live performance vs stuff off albums etc (and I pretty much have all of those). In other words, would I be getting much live stuff that's not available elsewhere -- and does it even have any stuff of Lanois performing with his band? Thanks, Todd [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Thu, 25 Jul 1996 14:05:50 -0400 (EDT) From: Eric Clark Subject: censored wynona cover I wrote a while back about the american edition of wynona and expressed my desire for a canadian copy. A fellow subscriber, named andrew helped me out with this. (Thanks again man, get in touch if you want anythng else). But I want to reply to a few postings saying that Americans exploit violence war etc, ., in response to some of our literate discussion about this cover art issue. I do not accept the generalizations made in this way. Yes, there are conservative and reactionary people in America, and some of us fight them at every turn. While some things are not appropriate for children for example, our first amendment rights are clear and intact. NO CENSORSHIP. Period. I choose to not generalize about Canadians or Eurpeans even though it would simplify postings and I condemn those who generalize about Americans. Keep these simlistic things off this digest, it lowers the quality of all our lives. Meanwhile, best regards to all fellow subscribers.
