How exciting this place has become! Also, Burke II comments on Hawkins. I agree. "Songs From Venice Beach" is also wonderful--released after his death, there is an eerie ghostly effect. Hawkins' "The Next Hundred Years" was produced by Tony Berg, who also produced Michael Penn. (I'm trying to make things relevant here...) I would put Michael Penn in the same category as Daniel Lanois as far as innovative, lyrical songwriting, spiritual, etc. Basically, their style is so different from anyone else's. And Tony Berg is right up there in the producing category with Mitchell Froom, Butch Vig, etc. He has this unique L.A. stamp. --reporting from L.A. suburb, Shu-Shu. You will not be disappointed. I'm sure everyone here will agree with me that it paints a wonderful portrait of the man and his music. The video features Daniel performing solo and with various other artists, and includes conversation about his musical philosophy, his life long musical journey, and his future path. And the scenes with his family are very heart-warming. Do yourself a favor and make the purchase!! [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: LISAPEARL@aol.com Date: Thu, 1 Aug 1996 18:39:38 -0400 Subject: How I met Bill Dillon This could end up being a long story. I became aware of Daniel's work as a producer in late 1992. In March of 1993 I travelled to New Orleans (I live in Milwaukee, WI) to visit some musician friends who were spending a couple months there. I figured out the Lanois/New Orleans connection from my then newly-purchased Acadie CD. It happened that one of my friends knew where Kingsway was, and the house we were staying at was only two blocks away from it. I decided that eveyday I was there I would make a point of walking past Kingsway. On the second day, I turned the corner, and I could hardly believe it - there was Daniel getting in to a van! Since I am not at all a shy person, I walked up to him and congratulated him on his Grammy for Producer of the Year for Achtung Baby. I also asked him to autograph my Acadie CD booklet which I conveniently had brought along. Daniel then invited my friend and me along to see him perform at a theater he was renting for rehearsals. How could I say no? The van was driven by Trina Shoemaker, whose name everyone should recognise. Along the way, we picked up Daryl Johnson. When we got to the theater, not a lot happened for a while, but I was able to talk to Daniel and ask him about any production work he had done that I was not aware of. Later, more people came, and Daniel performed some of his songs with Bill Dillon, Daryl, and Ronald Jones. Afterwards, my friend and I got a ride back to Kingsway from Mark Howard. He invited us to a party at Kingsway that night. That's where I met Bill Dillon. I said to him, "May I ask you a question?" and his reply was "I've said too much already". That dryly humourous comment will be with me forever. Anyway, that's when I asked him about the guitorgan. Unfortunately at that time I was not aware of the extent of his work, or I would have had a lot more questions for him! lisapearl@aol.com [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Sat, 3 Aug 1996 03:01:11 -0700 (MST) From: "Antonio S Abeyta" <21113@ef.gc.maricopa.edu> Subject: Whoa, it's like personal updates from Dan himself! :) Woo hoo - way to go Kenley! Thanks for all the work put into the newsletter and site... personal updates! :) >-Daniel has helped Bob Dylan produce a song- "Blue Eyed Jane"- on his >Jimmy Rogers Tribute album on Egyptian Records Bob's label through Sony. It was mentioned on the U2 list that this also includes Emmylou Harris on vocals... So now at least we know what to look forward to - a lot of nifty stuff coming out later this year! Can't wait :) Ant [Editor's Note: I believe it is Egyptian Records through Columbia.] [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Sat, 3 Aug 1996 03:27:34 -0700 (MST) From: "Antonio S Abeyta" <21113@ef.gc.maricopa.edu> Subject: KCRW show > Daniel Lanois will be a guest DJ on KCRW 89.9 in Santa Monica, Ca. >Aug. So... anyone gonna tape this? :) Sounds like it will be very interesting. Are they doing this with other musicians also, or just Lanois? Very Quick new music suggestions: Tracy Chapman: New Beginning - 3 words: beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Abdel Ali Slimani: Miraya - one of the newest RealWorld releases. Algerian guy who was/is also in Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart. Wobble & company produced (so you have the obligatory Sinead and Natacha Atlas guest vocals :) ) and very dance-y groove-y tunes. Tricky: Maxinquaye - formerly of Massive Attack. This is a very darkly mad kind of album with _very_ cool sounds and great vocals. Fans of Eno/U2's Passengers album might like this - Howie B produced one track. Haven't been able to stop listening to it - it gets in your brain and bounces around... Same with the Tracy Chapman album although they are _very_ different. Hey - give em a try. It can't kill ya. It might be fun. :) Ant [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Sat, 03 Aug 96 10:09:00 -0100 From: hollen@stacken.ct.se (hollen) Subject: Cover art Hi! 31/7 96 I'd like to defend meself a bit... Erik Clark wrote: "I want to reply to a few postings saying that Americans exploit violence war etc, in response to some of our literate discussion about this cover art issue. I do not accept the generalizations made in this way." There must be a misunderstanding here. I never said Americans in general exploit violence, war etc. I wrote:"It's strange that you can exploit violence, war etc", but I didn't mean the American people or America as a country! (The word "you" meaning here the same as "one" - indefinite pronoun.) I'm a great fan of American music, film and literature, and I would not generalize like that! No, what I meant was that to some people it is ok to exploit the before mentioned subjects, while they get very upset by a naked body. That's all... Conservative and reactionary people exist in Europe too! But this doesn't have much to to with the work of Lanois anymore... Last news letter I mentioned that Daniel Lanois will be appearing on a Los Angeles radio station to host and program a three hour music show. If you have any questions for him you can mail them to the following address... MAD.DOLL@KCRW.ORG ... I can hear it now, "why would I want to ask a question of Daniel Lanois if he's going to be on a radio station in L.A., I don't live anywhere near California!!!??" Well, I do. Since I posted that announcement I have received a few requests to tape this show and mail out tapes. I am not looking to profit from my geographical position, but if you want to send me postage and the cost of two ninety minute tapes, or a copy of a live performance I would be glad to mail a tape to you.. Please Email me at ... 73513.3043@Compuserve.COM ... and I we can make snail mail arrangements. The show will air on wednesday, Aug. 7. Please try to contact me before Aug. 14 if you are interested as I will try to mail all the tapes at one time to simplify things for me, thanks.
