Subject: Kudos and Questions

Great page! I have hoped for a long time that others have really sat up and
taken notice of Daniel Lanois and his truly unique musical gifts! Bravo!
Question: Why no lyrics to _Acadie_: "Under a Stormy Sky?" I've listened
to and loved it for years, but my French (Quebecois?) is more than a bit
rusty, and there are just a couple of phrases that have eluded my brain for
quite a while now. If you (Or any other Lanois scholars) know, could you let
me know? I'd appreciate it immensely. Another question: Is there any
possibility of finding real live sheet music or lead sheets (Beyond what
you've transcribed--thanks!) to any of Lanois' works?

Thanks again--this page has made for a refreshing evening; I'll keep in
touch.

Subject: Cover art , spirituality and responsibility of artists & fans

Hollen's response to my comments regarding censored American Version of
Wynona cover are much appreciated. (No disrespect intended Hollen. peace.)
Daniel must have agreed to this at some point, and I understand and respect
compromise, (Warner Bros. pressure? Fear that some stores, like the notorius
Wallmart, might not stock the CD?)) but the bottom line is that this gesture
ruined the album's cover art, and involves issues of our precious freedom.
Certainly, we don't need to go too deeply into political issues. I'm
interested in the music and art, but I believe we all have the
responsibility to speak our truth from our hearts when we see injustice ,
prejudice or narrowmindedness.

I am a drummer and percussionist, and I make paintings as well. It may be
that I am sensitive to these things because I believe that artists and
musicians must have complete freedom to create as we will. Creative work is
part of a spiritual process for some of us (isn't this a large part of what
we find so beautiful in Daniel's music?) and this is to be honored and
protected, not censored, controlled or demonized by individuals who fear
things that don't easily fit into their picture of reality.

I guess it comes down to respect and compassion. Here in the USA, it seems
like so many folks are just trying to meet their expenses and feed their
kids that these kinds of issues seem less urgent than they otherwise might.
I am saddened by this, because art and music can lift us up in so many ways.
My own work and my respect for the work of artists like Daniel is rooted
in longing for truth and kindness.

Let's be strong together as we may, when and wherever we may, including
this wonderful digest, so freely and kindly organized by Kenley Neufeld.

Peace.

Erek Clark

Subject: New Bob Dylan album with Daniel Lanois?

Hello,

Regarding this message on ACADIE:

>i have been told that lanois has the tapes to the next dylan album and
>hes supposed to add the music to it. has anyone out thereheard anything?

I have found this on the Bob Dylan newsgroup (rec.music.dylan):

>I heard this info from a fellow Hamilton, Canada musician whom Lanois
>has been courting for his A&R deal with A&M Records in the U.S...she heard
>the demos herself - Lanois played them for her, and told the story of
>visiting Dylan's house, etc...I recently spoke to an engineer at Lanois home
>base studio in Hamilton, who confirmed that Lanois was to produce the
>upcoming album. This is all I know right now, but I'll try to glean more
>out of
>the engineer, who is a close friend of Lanois'....

With 'this info' he refers to an earlier message he send to the newsgroup
and in which he tells of rumours that say that Dylan had demoed new songs
and asked Lanois to produce them. It didn't say anything about adding music
to existing tapes. That would be a very strange way to work (and very
unlike the way Daniel Lanois operates). I suspect Dylan recorded the new
songs in his own little studio (probably just him and his guitar/piano) so
Lanois (or any other producer) could listen to them. The message did
mention a possible title of the upcoming album: 'Stormy Season'.
An earlier report about Dylan's recording plans stated that Dylan wouldn't
record before 1997 - could this be because he's waiting for Lanois to be
available?

Needles to say: I'm hoping this is all true....

Greetings,

Daniel Baars.

Hi everyone, spilled coffee on myself this morning when my local NPR station
KRCC Colorado Springs invited me to listen to E-Town on Sunday (8/11)
afternoon to hear invited guest Daniel Lanois and others. I think E-Town is
recorded in Boulder and sold to all the other NPR stations. I'll try to
record the show if I get off work early enough (from within Cheyenne
Mountain Air Force Station where we get very little radio reception). Call
your local public radio dealership and inquire about local feed. Oh and
thanks to those who have suggested DL-ish artists, you are my guide! Tim

Hi!

Ken, I wonder if I can "publish" this letter in your newsletter.

Where are you Amy Abare? (Abare@smcvax.smcvt.edu)
I can't reach you. The e-mails I sent came back. Return to sender,
address unknown... Mail me about the Lanois-video.
Greetings

Hi. Some of you may be interested to know that a short piece from "Apollo"
is used in "Trainspotting." It's in the scene where, er, the guy goes
"swimming." I'm not sure if they use any other music from Lanois or
whatever music was used for the rest of the movie because I didn't get to
see all of it due to the stupid blackout! (For you non-U.S. we had a major
one hour blackout that effected most of the Western U.S.) O.k. folks,
confess, I know it was you people turning on your computer at the same time
. . .

Okay - here's the first three lyrics from Wynona... You know the drill -
look them over if you can and send any corrections/suggestions to me, Ant
(21113@ef.gc.maricopa.edu) or Juani (juani@intergate.bc.ca). Thanks!! :)

***The Messenger

Got a letter from a messenger
I read it when it came
It said that you were wounded,
you were bound and chained

You had loved and you were handled
You were poisoned, you were pained
oh no, oh no -
you were naked, you were shamed

You could almost touch heaven
right there in front of you
liberty just slipped away on us
now there's so much work to do

Oh the door that closes tightly
is the door that can't swing wide
oh no, oh no -
Not expecting to collide

For a minute I let my guard down
not afraid to be found out
Completely forgotten
what our fears were all about

oh no, oh no -
There's no need to be without

There's a chance and I will take it
this desire I can't kill
Take my heart, please don't break it
I will crawl to your foothill

I'm frightened but I'm coming,
please baby, please lay still
oh no, oh no -
Not coming for the kill
oh no, oh no -
Not coming for the kill
oh no, oh no -
Not coming for the kill

***Brother L.A.

Brother you wait up late
when you finish the midnight shift
and you try to put out the hate
and you know it's going to drift

Brother you're going down
down from the fountain blue
you can call on the one
the one that you

It feels right with you my brother
it feels right when you're right here
No, I don't want to know
every mountain, every fear

(?) brother who can always pick you up
Who can fill your pocket
when you're all messed up

The sea that promises defeat
is the flood that will come
The heat that keeps your habit warm
is the flame that will burn

Are you wearing your filters?
Are you changing your clothes?
Are you wearing your colors?
So that nobody knows

Oh brother, brother, brother,
brother of mine

(?) brother, who'll pick me up
Fill my pockets when I'm all messed up
(Invitation?) you don't have to hide no more
Gimme something I don't mind
you can lay it down on me
You can say it I wanna know...
Oh brother, brother, brother
brother of mine

Oh sister, sister, sister
sister of mine...

look for my brother
look for my brother
look for my brother
look for my brother

***Still Learning How to Crawl

I looked at you, your lips were moving
but I did not hear what you said
you wanted me, you wanted my name
I was carrying two feet of lead

See the rising sun on this make-believe town
white shoe shine and leather, both of us so brown

I was in the water, you were dry
you yelled my name now I know why
I'm still learning how to crawl
I'm still learning how to crawl

If that big drum, drum is rumbling
keep me in line, keep me from stumbling
when I first went down, everything was right
skinny white leg, laying on my bed
over there running, afraid to be found out

Tasting everything with a scream and shout
all I wanted, I rejected
drinking from a cup of (?)
I'm learning how to crawl
I'm still learning how to crawl

He ain't comin' in, 'til you lay the table
He ain't comin' in, not comin' to watch me fall
The killer moves in, moves right into your face
When everything seems to be in its right place
Can't wait for love, love to be king
Can't wait for the love, to come with its sting

You blew away in your blue dress
I lost the one that I loved best
I'm still learning how to crawl
I'm just learning how to crawl

I'm still learning how to crawl
I'm just learning how to crawl...

Daniel Lanois has proven to be overwhelmingly successful with U2. I,
personally, consider Lanois to be the fifth member of U2. Does anyone
expect him to ever produce another album with U2?? I have enjoyed
listening to two of Lanois albums and am most intrigued with his efforts
on "... Wynonna"; in particular "Death of a train" and his solos at the
end of "Messenger" and "Waiting". I can understand his solo involvements
but why doesn't he use some spare time to help u2. I hear much of the
magic from Joshua Tree in Daniel Lanois' work. U2 need that magic!!! On
behalf of myself and other concerned fans please "HELP"!!!! ... Peter!
