I was recently given a promo cd single of "Still Water" with the LP version, radio edit and a live version. I thought perhaps some of you might like to know about it. The radio edit is a different mix from the one on Acadie. Very nice, a bit pumped up with guitar tracks pushed forward. The live version is wonderful too, there's a very deep emotional zone on this track. (You all know the term, "the zone", eh?) There are a couple of other rare tracks out there on promo cds as well. Maybe we could all compare notes and compile a list of these tracks to the ultimate end of exchanging tapes of these recordings which are difficult to lay hands on. ( Again, for the record, this is about exchanging music among friends for private personal enjoyment.).. I have heard there was an E-Town (radio show I can't get here in New Jersey) broadcast of Emmylou Harris with Daniel Lanois and another of Daniel live? Anyone who has tapes of this, please let me know. I would like to trade for copies. Thanks. Peace. I think DL is a genius, and Acadie is one of my top 10 albums of all time, but I didn't buy Wynona (which is sold uncensored here in Britain). I didn't buy it because of the cover picture, for two reasons: 1. (95%) My lady partner would be very upset and offended if I bought such a picture. You can call her wrong, and irrational, and talk all you want about Art, but she would still refuse to accept it, and I respect her feelings. And I feel she is by no means the only woman who would feel this way. 2. (5%) The picture itself, showing a naked young girl holding a vicious-looking knife, mixes sex and violence in a way which I personally consider dangerous and really rather sickening. So Daniel, you lost a sale and I didn't get to hear your music - maybe that's what you intended, but I can't think why. Surely its the music that matters? And no, I don't want a copy of the censored version, thanks - the thought would still be there: I wonder why someone who would be offended by Fuck is not offended by F**k when it's obvious what it is? End of rant, Charlie Hulme [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] [Editor's Note: The following message was sent to me personally. Kenley, you've done something magical for the fans of the music and the artist. So accept my thanks for this ACADIE digest that arrives once a week in my inbox. We're so often presented with the PR-face of music, the videos of the bands, their Ticketmaster blockbuster shows. Lanois seems to be a uniquely powerful behind-the-scenes presence in producing the blockbuster forces in pop culture while pursuing a path of seriously interesting musical integrity in his own work. It seems these days he's successfully stepping into an even "deeper well" of musical exploration while trying to navigate the obvious perils of the recording industry. He makes it all appear so -- for lack of a better term -- effortless...producing U2, Gabriel, Dylan, Harris et al while still putting out songs like "O Marie" and "Jolie Louise" and so on. Obviously it is not effortless to achieve this. He has worked many long years and no doubt made his own sacrifices to produce the music of the big acts and, eventually, tell his own stories -- which, in the end, is the most compelling aspect of his work. I'm not sure what intrigues me most about Lanois music. I think it's the soulful spirit in his work -- this yearning quality...for love, acceptance. The characters in many of his stories are incredibly vulnerable, sometimes deluded, very often in pain, but always full of feeling, pushing the limits in trying to make sense of the worlds around them, even if they often fail...even if they're surrounded by loss -- in family, trust, love, or whatever...you can't listen to the solo work and miss this disconnection that his characters have with their life situations...a trapper in love with a stripper, for example...a rum-drinker who has beaten his wife and struck her down...a steelworker blasted in the heat of an open hearth. And beyond all the lyrics (and my pretentious talk about them), there is the music that both tells the story and heightens it. Anyway, the digest is working. I look forwward to reading more. The dinky reporter had specifically asked him why "American Edition" was printed across and Lanois just sort of shrugged and said we couldn't print a nude picture so we put that to cover it. And he said that they wrote "American Edition" because it was happening here too--rapes of women--as well as in those chaotic Slavic countries. He said they wanted to make a statement for Americans. (I guess he ended up pointing out two major issues, huh?) Anyhow, that's what I interpreted from his response. Also, Peter asked about why Lanois doesn't work with U2. The rumor is that he doesn't get along as well with some of the members, particularly The Edge. I'm curious to know what some of the other "rumors" are! : ) [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: WFY261@aol.com Date: Sat, 17 Aug 1996 20:13:53 -0400 Subject: Re: ACADIE Digest, Number 33 [a thanks] Lisa, Thanks so much for sharing your story! I doubt it, not in the short run anyway. After reading "Untill the End of the world" it's fair to say U2 and Lanois have gone on different directions. U2 wanted to move on and Lanois desperately wanted them to stay the same. In "Rocky world"-the videa Lanois talks about this new direction of U2 and seems to understand and support the new U2 but still... It seems that U2 has had enough with Daniels work. And it's a shame. Lanois really did some marvellous job with them... Still U2 has always been moving on and new producer (Nellee Hooper) can have some new very intesting effects on U2s music. Anyway, I'm still looking for new U2 and Lanois maybe on some tribute-album etc. -With-love------ / _ _ _ (__ (// / \/ -lauril@heo.fi-- ____/ [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] The views expressed in ACADIE are those of the individual authors only.
