Subject: Emmylou live and Wynona cover
although Daniel did not make the suprise appearance i keep hearing he tends
to make at some of Emmylou's shows, attending the last show of the Wrecking
Ball tour (for free, i might add, as part of Nashville's riverfront Dancin
in the District series), was one of the musical highlights of my year. i am
not a huge fan of country music, and i bought Wrecking Ball just because DL
produced it (to say the least). it has become one of my all time
favourites. however, after hearing Wrecking Ball and *finally* seeing
Emmylou live, i consider myself an all-around fan of hers. she even did a
few Lanois tunes- The Maker and Indian Red, and did both exceptionally
well.
regarding the "...Wynona" cover. i got kinda tired of this subject several
issues ago, but in skimming this issue's ever present letter regarding it i
found by far the silliest letter of all. i was suprised the author had the
gall to type the word "fuck" even out of context, considering he would let
the prudish opinion of his female partner influence wether or not he bought
what is in my opinion one of the most incredible pieces of musicianship and
production in existence. i hate to sound judgemental, because really i dont
mean it in that way; i just find it extremely sad that so many people in
the world fail to see beauty, even in controversial and not so happy
things. it seems that it must be pretty to have beauty to some people, and
i have found that beauty is so much more. a thought entered my head one day
in a rainstorm in a parking lot, that everything is sacred. it would take a
lot of rambling to explain myself, so i will just hope that someone out
there gets it on their own.
btw, thanks again for putting out this newsletter, i love it!

I have a question: Does DL know about the Unofficial DL Web Site? He
might find the comments interesting if he did.

I believe the new album is being produced by not only Flood, but also Nellee
Hooper and Howie B. Those of you who purchased The Passengers may remember
some of Howie B's work on there -- his DJ work is greatly admired by Brian
Eno. Nellee Hooper has done the production work on Bjork's albums. I don't
really care for Hooper's productions so far, and the combination of these
people seems to me to be a recipe for some excruciatingly mediocre-sounding
music, although I hope I am mistaken.

I bought the tickets very early and I was expecting the concert SO MUCH, I
almost couldn't cope with it. It was in Helsinki so I had to travel "all
day" to get to Helsinki and I also had reserved a hostel I could stay night in.
The concert... I was terrified at the start.. There were this guys with
cowboy hats shoutin "yihaaa" and stuff so loudly I couldn't hear Emmylous
vocals LITERALLY. There were also these f****ing rednecks who left the
building after seeing Emmylous band (Budd Miller, Darryll Johnson, Brian(?)
Blade). The start was just ok but not anything special Emmylou sang Where
Will I Be(?) and Wrecking Ball... But THEN I was REALLY terrified, she
started to sing these traditional country songs with no heart at it at all.
I can't, I can not understand how she got the band to play such a boring
stuff. The stuff Brian(?) played was inspiring though. I bet this stuff she
did was because she knew there was going to be old fans of hers that would
be dissapointed if she didn't do these obligatory numbers.
After she got over with these dissapointing numbers she played some stuff I
can never forget. First: these stunningly beautiful numbers she did alone or
with Budd Miller. Second: the whole group sung without accompaniment and
they did it so harmonically I could close my eyes and imagine I was in
heaven. Third: they played song "Deeper well" with such an intensity the
whole place was in trance - me and the band at least. Fourth: they sung this
stuff of Daniel L. (Indian red, the Maker and maybe some other songs I can't
remember right now) that summoned the spirit of Daniel to the place. I was
little sorry for Emmylou though it was almost like she was not so much in
the front in this stuff. But she seemed to be settled to this situation and
I was in trance.
I read from the music magazine "rumba" that the Band and Emmylou felt this
was their best gig in a long time (I can't actually remember what they
compared it with but they really digged it) and the whole place was shouting
so loud for more. I was yelling so loud I have never yelled before. I was so
happy. Everybody was clapping and cheering and Emmylou came back over and
over again untill she had to stop - I bet she hadn't been prepared for so
many songs with the band... The last of the songs she did I remember where
duets and she alone in the stage.
One of the greatest moments in my life.

Hi!
"It seems that U2 has had enough with Daniels work. And it's a shame. Lanois
really did some marvellous job with them... Still U2 has always been moving
on and new producer (Nellee Hooper) can have some new very intesting effects
on U2s music. Anyway, I'm still looking for new U2 and Lanois".
I love The Joshua Tree and all (well, most of) the music U2 and Lanois
made together, but to me U2s best album is...yes ... Zooropa, produced
by Flood! Lanois had nothing to do with that album (I think). Does anyone
agree with me? Or do you, dear DL-friends, consider that a blasphemy?:-)

"For the beauty..." is full of rather sickening stories (Sleepin' in the
Devils bed for instance) put up in a Lanoisish=) style... So I bet you
wouldn't have liked the songs either. I, myself really listen to Lanois
through the feelings the music gives me and not analyzing word by word why
does he say that and that. That is why I like it so much, it's so full of
emotions in every sound, in every effect, in every word. (thing Lanois
talked about in "Rocky world"-the video also) Same thing with the picture:
don't analyze - just feel it =). It makes me feel unsecure, little disgusted
etc. and I _FEEL_ it's a very good picture for Lanois album. Can't imagine a
picture with more suitable emotion for the album and the songs.
