I had to say it: Three cheers for Holly, and her post to the last
digest! I'm completely sick of the album cover debate, and of the kind
of judgemental opinion Holly referred to. Criticize, but think; think,
but feel.

Cheers,

Hi-
Really enjoyed the Lanois site. Will peruse the archives when I have
more time.
Answers to a couple of questions.
I believe that Lanois produced "Secrets and Sins" for Luba, a Montreal
based singer, in 1984. "Let It Go'' was a hit single off the album,
really nice song with strong Carribean influences. If you ever can
hear the 12 inch version.
Lanois also played with Ray Materick, a Hamilton based folk singer in
the late 1970's. I've got the album somewhere. I'm not sure whether he
produced the album or not. The album came out in 1979.
I'll keep digging in my vaults to see what I can see.
Could you please me on your digest mail list.

I've noticed that some of you seem to be big Brian Eno fans as well, so I
figgered I'd mention that Mr. Eno has a book that has already been released
in Europe called "A Year With Swollen Appendices". It will be released any
time now in the United States. It is Brian Eno's diary for 1995, but also
includes various essays. It's published by Faber and Faber, and the ISBN
number is 0-571-17995-9, and the paperback costs $US17.

So far, I've made it to August. It has some interesting ideas and insights,
although I do find some of it a bit dull -- still, worth a read for the ideas
and insights and observations (and some occurrences) that Eno makes/does.
Up to this point, I don't recall any references to DL.

Subject: DL's involvement with Zooropa

In a message dated 96-08-26 11:07:48 EDT, you write:

<< but to me u2s best album is...yes ... zooropa, produced by
flood! lanois had nothing to do with that album (i think). does
anyone agree with me? or do you, dear dl-friends, consider that a
blasphemy?:-)>>

Wellllll...DL had very little to do with "Zooropa" as far as the credits are
concerned. The listing for "Numb": Originally recorded with Daniel Lanois.
I don't believe that his name appears anywhere else on the credits. Oh,
and it's produced, according to the back cover, not only by Flood, but also
Brian Eno and The Edge, and engineered by Flood and Robbie Adams. And while
I don't happen to agree with your idea of what U2's best album is, nope -- no
blasphemy! :) The only U2 album that I play on a regular basis is
"Unforgettable Fire", which I think is beautiful.

Subject: For the Beauty of Silly Letters

<< regarding the "...wynona" cover. i got kinda tired of this
subject several issues ago, but in skimming this issue's ever
present letter regarding it i found by far the silliest letter of
all. i was suprised the author had the gall to type the word
"fuck" even out of context, considering he would let the prudish
opinion of his female partner influence wether or not he bought
what is in my opinion one of the most incredible pieces of
musicianship and production in existence.>>

Was the letter that silly? If his "lady partner" would be offended by the
cover, then perhaps the person is just respecting her wishes -- something
that may be considered a nice trait in certain parts of the world. And if he
is also offended by the cover, then so be it. I personally do not find the
cover offensive at all, but there again, it really takes a lot to
offend/shock me in regard to art. We all have our different levels, and
different catalysts, of what we find emotionally repulsive, and perhaps the
gentleman has a different view than yours or mine. It is his right to
exercise his purchase decision. As for the fuck/f**k bit, didn't he write
that as an example, making an analogy between uncensored and the censored
album covers? And didn't he spell out the word "fuck" (now this is getting
reeeally silly!) the first time around?

>>i hate to sound judgemental, because really i dont
 mean it in that way;>>

I'm quite sure that you don't mean to sound judgmental, but when you describe
someone's reactions to art as "prudish", aren't you making a judgment?

>> i just find it extremely sad that so many people in
the world fail to see beauty, even in controversial and not so happy
 things. >>

You bring up an interesting point, and it makes me think of a friend I have.
He fairly regularly watches very graphic, detailed videos of people getting
tortured or brutally killed. This includes people's heads being shot at
close gunpoint, being gouged by knives, disemboweled, and eaten by cannibals,
etc. I find it most interesting that my friend would probably be among the
first to agree with your point. I personally do not enjoy watching these
videos -- not my idea of entertainment, and for that, some people may
consider me "prude". Should my friend feel saddened that many of us may not
share his enthusiasm in watching what is probably considered "controversial
and not-so-happy" by many of us? Perhaps -- perhaps -- that's for him to
answer, not me -- but it does illustrate the many different levels of
tolerance that each of us have for art, and possibly how important it is that
we have tolerance for other people's interpretation of that art, provided
that their interpretation suddenly doesn't somehow impinge on *our* right to
interpret it.

Now...back to our regularly scheduled program.

Subject: Commentary: Beauty Beneath the Rubble

Here's my commentary on the cover art and "Wynona" (oh no, another one who
thinks s/he has something important to say...).

I don't know about many of you but I was struck by the difference between
"Acadie" and "Wynona." Wynona is nastier, sexier, and aggressive. But I
was also struck at how similar Wynona is to Acadie, melodically beautiful
and experimentally spiritual. I got Wynona before I got Acadie but I
understood Acadie before I understood Wynona. I have come to this
conclusion: I cannot compare the two albums to each other--one is not
better than the other. But I do have an explanation as to why I was more
accustomed to Acadie than Wynona.

Wynona opened up so many emotions and most of it is raw. All emotions are
instictive. Sex is seen as a means of love to reach a spiritual love
[Lotta Love to Give]. Work (at overtime, even!) is seen as the task that
takes one away from sex and therefore, from love [For the Beauty of
Wynona]. Love becomes confused with sacrifice and obsession [Wynona & The
Collection of Marie Claire & Beatrice]. People we love, leave [Beatrice &
The Unbreakable Chain]. We all have the devil inside us, we all have a
touch of (G)god within us [plug any Lanois song here]. And none of this we
can escape.

It is this rawness that makes Wynona different from the more historical
sounding Acadie. There is no community in rawness, rawness is an
individual's emotion. Rawness forces one to remove our daily masks to
search within ourselves and let out that primal scream. Rawness is the
opposite of mundane, it is the exposure of the self to the world. It is
the nude woman exposing her fragile body. She is carrying her primal
scream, the knife, and she finds the strength, the tight grip to hold on to
who-she-is--the woman without her mask.

We are haunted [insert atmospheric Lanois music here] by the raw emotions
that make life torturous and joyous--they are opposing forces but one
cannot appreciate the other without it. It is with these extreme emotions
that make life worth living...it is the BEAUTY of life.

Eno/Lanois and "Martha and the Muffins" (This is the ice age).If
you are a "Hendrix" fan, i have an inreresting bootleg called
"Ladyland in flames". Being french, i can also help you with the

I am interested in this compiulation, however I have been unable to track it
down. Apparently it is out of production. I have tried Atlanta and now I am
living in New Jersey. Any ideas because I desperately need to get this live
compilation. Lanois was here at the Count Basie Theater with Emmylou and the
night was magical, dreamy. I had this warm feeling all over. Please respond
if anyone knows the wherabouts of Cool Water. Possibly Greenwich Village or
even someone out there can find a store where it has not been sold yet.
Thanks.

Kenley-
I'' keep digging on Luba and Materick. I remember reading about Canadian
actor Graham Green (ever see Clearcut?) about his days as a general
factorum/aid at Grant Avenue studios in Hamilton in the late 1970's. Lots
of interesting activities going on there.

***Beatrice

Beatrice come over here, come and lay yourself down
yeah, tell me all about it to that lonesome sound
take a look outside, it's all a bit crazy
people are real nervous, too nervous to talk to a mother's son.

Beatrice let's get dressed, Take a look at what's been done
yeah, you got me thinking about what I don't want to know
Beating of the chest, snake rising in the patriot's nest
doing what's best, kicking out the face of a mother's son.

Beatrice I like your smile, makes me want to own you
well okay just for a while then, before they stone you
tell me how do you speak to God?
How do you speak to God when you're down there on the floor
singing the song of a mother's son

singin' out now
singin' out now...

***Marie Claire

Marie Claire, j'ai marche toute la soiree
Ton portrait est toujours pres de mon coeur
Je veux te dire que je t'ai reve tout l'ete
Marie Claire, s'il te plait, n'ait pas peur.

I brought you some colors to paint with
On the nights when it's cold outside
And I'll shoot that blue-eyed son of a bitch,
'cause it's me who'll have you for his bride

Marie Claire, it's no good la vie d'une danseuse
Tout les yeux, they're on you, I can't stand (it)
Don't you know that you are my amoureuse
Marie Claire, let them all be damned

My hands have bled to the bone
I brought you a drawing to see
Of the cabin made of sticks and stones,
and there you will learn to love me

Marie Claire, j'ai sale beaucoup de poisson
et les bois du nord maintenant sont tranquilles
Je te promets de ne pas boire la boisson
Oublie-le, Montreal, la vieille ville

As I lay you there on the backseat,
all in white there, dans mon char
Take your time Marie Claire and sleep,
as I bring you up to Labrador

***Death of A Train

Union Station, tombstone high
No more tears, this fountain dry
Nameless faces, just headlines
We don't ride that train no more

No resistance, turn my head
They could go out East instead
Newfoundland, land of my father
I don't ride your train no more

Gold still shining, Battle Creek
Eyes are heavy, rain and sleet
Massey-Ferguson memories
we don't ride that train no more

Hey there captain, is that you?
Could you tell me, tell me what to do
I been twenty years on that Soo line
We don't ride your train no more

Smoke rises from the face of sand
dreams about, dreams of beaver dams
Sam can't hear quite like he used to
Tell them why we don't ride no more

Hey, Pierre Trudeau...oh, where are you?
My friend to lead us through
these hard times, so much confusion
I don't hear your train no more

I can't ride no more
I can't ride no more...
