Subject: DL Update

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your ongoing participation in the Newsletter. I would like to
mention that the "Cool Water" CD is a bootleg and any money you spend
on it does _not_ go to Daniel Lanois or his label. Despite the CD not being
an official release, I will not ban discussion of it on the Newsletter but I did
want to make sure everyone is aware of the status of that particular CD.

On a better note, Daniel has been finishing up the touches on the movie
soundtrack for "Slingblade" coming out from Mirimax. The title may change
before the release of the CD. The soundtrack will basically be an instrumental
journey of Daniel's music with a few songs from artists he has worked with in his
studio in Oxnard.

I hope some of you got the chance to go see Daniel perform with Luscious Jackson
in NYC this past Friday. Let us know if you did. Their new CD, produced by
DL, will be called "Fever In, Fever Out" and will be available on October 29. An
EP called "Naked Eye" will be out on September 19. Their tour will be starting
in October; perhaps DL will join them on some dates(?).

I have updated much of the web site, so go check it out. The Subscriber Page
is now a table and includes a new column: geographic location. If you wish to
be included there, send me an email with the subject line of "Subscriber List" and
tell me where you live.

F.Y.I. - DL will _not_ be performing with Emmylou on the rest of her tour.

Apologies for writing so much but there was a lot to cover.

Kenley

For those of you that are interested in a copy of cool water. There is a
distribution company out of Miami, Florida called Bassin
Distribution/Allience Entertainment whom I used to work for. As of a few
months ago, they were still stocking the album.

That's the good news, the bad news is that Bassin does not sell to
individuals, so you have to find a chain that is stocked by Bassin.

**Hint: Barnes & Noble. They should be able to oder it for you, even if
they don't stock it.

You also maybe able to call Bassin and find a store claser to you that they
supply to.

If you want more information, email me at ludfordc@pinellas.k12.fl.us

Greetings all! Erek the drummer here. Listening to Daniel's recent KPFA
guest DJ appearance, and feeling grateful for his inspiration..... I want to
share some of the highlights with you all..He said he hopes to work with Bob
Dylan on his next record. Let's all hope for this to come to fruition... if
you haven't discovered "Oh Mercy" well, do yourself a favor, eh? Words
escape me where this one is concerned. Just one of the greatest records.
Daniel played two of his "works in progress"...One is a a drum track...very
strong, moderate tempo...Brian Blade and Daryl Johnson playing with ample
reverbs and delays....the other, a d e e e p reggae groove....
this one had my friends and I dancing around in my backyard howling at the
moon...wow ...deep, beautiful grooves. He mentions titles and perhaps I'll
post these if anyone is interested in that. There's also music for a film
coming soon. don't know if this will be offerred as a record or not...(.I
will also post name of film next time.) Then, there's the Luscious Jackson
record which Daniel produced. Several" Luscious Jacksons " put out a nice
record under the name Kostars. Buy this too... It points to where they were
headed musically with Daniel, I think.... soulful grooves, interesting
melodies, cool lyrics that are thought provoking. Daniel played two tracks
from LJ's soon to be released record. (Names next time). One song had the
chorus "Faith will come humbly down, fear will come tumbling down." So, we
have much to look forward to. Daniel said there's no schedule for his next
record. "I work in the cracks of other projects, that's why I'm slow
(laughs)." OK, music lovers...be kind, and be strong.
.

Erek the drummer here. Running drum circles at the Jersey shore and playing
29 shows in August has been beautiful, yet I long for a new, deeper musical
expression with others.( Hope you non musician Lanois heads don't mind this
personal request for contact with musicians.)

It is my hope that contact through this site might yield new musical
partnership. Familiarity with Daniel's" musical vocabulary" being a good
starting place.

Please contact me if you are seeking a mature professional
drummer/percussionist for the sake of creating new music.

I play various percussion and drums, including didjeridoo, udu, djembe,
talking drum, and occasional kitchen utensils....

Thank you.

It seems that Lanois uses various alternate guitar-tunings on his songs,
This occurs to me when he's playing the two acoustic songs on the 'rocky
world' video, and I have tried to figure out what kind of alt. tuning he
uses.
The DADGHD tuning seems to be used in some of his songs, like f.ex. 'rocky
world' (the song!). Also, it seems that he uses open-D (DADF#AD) on 'still
water'.
But I wonder if anybody have figured out any other tunings?

For everybody who are interest in the next Lanois release! One of
my friend had seen Geoffrey Oryema in Quebec city this summer.
Geoffrey (an african artist produced by Peter Gabriel) said to
him that Daniel Lanois is to release an album for the beginning
of winter. I wish that it is not a rumor.

P.S last week, in my request about cool water c.d i forgot

Just wanted to ask if you if you're aware of Dan Lanois' work with
Raffi. I think he may have played in something called String Band as
well... this is a vague memory from the early 80's so I can't be sure.
He also produced a Willie P. Bennett album.

[Anybody heard anything about this? Please let me know. - Kenley]

Subject: Re: U2 - Nellee Hooper

I wanted to put in my 2 cents on the U2-Nellee Hooper debate. I
understand that a lot of people really enjoyed what U2 and Lanois were
doing around the time of The Joshua Tree (myself included), but I'm very
glad that U2 has continued to change and grow and embrace new sounds and
new technologies. Nellee Hooper has been responsible for some really
amazing music over the last few years and I think it's a good fit with
the direction that U2 has been taking.

I am a strong believer that some of the most interesting work in music is
taking place in the realm of electronic "dance" music from the likes of
Bjork, Tricky, The Chemical Brothers, Portishead, Orbital, DJ Krush,
Massive Attack, etc. These groups and many others are manipulating
sounds in new and innovative ways and creating music that fuses the
texture of musique concrete with heavy beats and dub effects.

The best of the new breed express the chaos and claustraphobia of the
postmodern era and celebrate the catharsis of the Beat. They produce the
jazz of the 21st century. I would urge anyone who is serious about music
to try to open themselves to what this music has to offer.

This music has an immediacy which isn't easily dismissed.

Surrender to pure sensation!

Greetings,

I recently discovered a compilation album in a mail order catalog that has
a Daniel Lanois track. The cd is called "Crisis in the Rainforest". It
is on the Columbia label. The disc also includes Midnight Oil &
Tragically Hip. I do not know when the disc was released or what song it
includes. Does anyone have any info?

Thanks in advance.

Griffith
