This is brought to you from "Addicted To Noise" in
"Music News of the World" on October 18, 1996. http://www.addict.com/html/hifi/MNOTW/
Producer Lanois Delivers Dark Soundtrack
Local H contribute cool version of Guided By Voices song.
Addicted To Noise staff writer Gil Kaufman reports: There will be
a new Daniel Lanois album out on November 26, but it won't be the
follow-up to his last solo album, For the Beauty of Wynona.
You're just gonna have to keep waiting on that one because even
his record label doesn't know when the notorious studio rat will
supply them with fresh material. But, what you can expect from
the moody mixmaster, who produced the upcoming Luscious Jackson
album and has worked with U2, Emmylou Harris and Brian Eno in the
past, is a fourteen-song soundtrack on Island Records with nine
shimmering instrumental tracks that run the gamut from trip-hop
to spaghetti western, all overlaid with the by-now-familiar
Lanois gothic sheen. (A tenth track with vocals, "The
Maker," appeared on Lanois' first album.) The gloomy
instrumentals appear, along with a Barry White-like tune
("Lonely One") from Tim Gibbons, a classic instrumental
from Booker T & the MG's ("Soul Dressing") and a
surprisingly rich Guided By Voices cover from Chicago's Local H
("Smothered in Hugs") on the soundtrack to Sling Blade,
a movie by Billy Bob Thorton. Thorton, who wrote, directed and
stars in the movie, plays a man who, after being released from an
insane asylum 25 years after murdering his mother and her lover,
befriends a young boy, his mother and her abusive boyfriend (
played by country star Dwight Yoakam). The movie also features
cameos from actor Robert Duvall and director Jim Jarmusch, and,
if it's anything like Lanois' twitchy, electronic transmissions
from inner space, promises to be dark and exceptionally weird.
Thorton is best known as a member of the cast of the short-lived
John Ritter sitcom "Heart of Fire" and as the co-writer
and star of the excellent indie film One False Move. The
soundtrack also features a song from former sound engineer Bambi
Lee Savage called "Darlin'." A source at Island who's
seen the movie, set to open in mid-December, describes it as
"very dark, which is why the music perfectly reflects what's
on the screen."

Subject: New Midnight Oil
Just thought I'd mention: I heard the new Midnight Oil song the
other day
and liked it very much - very 'familiar' sound. Then saw it in
the store
tonight and discovered that Malcolm Burn produced it...! I know
that Dan
had been working with Midnight Oil in the past with the
"Land" benefit -
hmmm... I wonder....
I also heard the Luscious Jackson song "Naked Eye"
finally - very nifty!
I've only heard it once but can say that I probably wouldn't have
guessed
that Dan had anything to do with it had I not known, mainly
because, one,
well... it's Luscious Jackson...! and, two, because it has an
almost "Eno"
sound to it. Looking forward to hearing more!
Ant :)
PS - new music suggestion: "Adventures In Afropea 3: Telling
Stories to
the Sea" on David Byrne's Luaka Bop label. Very rich,
texturous music -
plus it's got Cesaria Evora -beautiful voice!

Subject: Sling Blade
Hello friends,
I have, in my hot little hands right now, the promo release of
the
Sling Blade soundtrack! I have not been able to listen to it in
depth yet, but
the first listen is wonderful-- beautiful little atmospheric
pieces, more
along the lines of Acadie's gentler moments than Wynona's more
violent
explorations. I, of course, would love to hear some vocals, but
tehse
instrumental pieces are a lot more entertaining and enjoyable
than I thought
they'd be. My copy doesn't have a cover, so I can't report any
interesting
credit info, but I will be interested to see if Lanois is playing
with others
on these tracks. Funny thing is, I know nothing about the movie!
By the way, my name is Bradley-- i'm new to the list. I've been a
Lanois fan since I was in the seventh grade, my favorite album is
Wynona, and
I tend to prefer his solo stuff to his production work. I saw him
live once
with Emmylou Harris and was very impressed. I'm a musician, too,
and though my
stuff doesn't usually have much in common with Lanois' music, I
consider him
an influence (actually, I recently recorded a track for a mailing
list tribute
album to Scott Miller, and the track I did is very Lanois-esque!)
Anyhow, i'm
glad I found this list--please feel free to email me and
introduce
yourselves--I would love to "meet" all of you.
take care,
Bradley

Subject: songs in progress/wkcr radio show
Greetings all. The wkcr radio show Daniel guest hosted featured a
couple of
works in progress and rough mixes from new Luscious Jackson
album. These
were wonderful. Lots of beautiful drumming, great reggae like
groove and
deep feeling, like the musicians were in a cave at night by a
campfire. LJ
tracks are very good as well, with the Daniel effect in evidence.
The LJ cd
is due at the end of the month, last I heard. There was also a
piece with
Daniel and Ani DiFranco. Spoken word and instumental music
collaboration. So
intimate. This too will hopefully be released next year on a
compilation CD.
Thank you so much to Daniel from those of us who got to listen to
the show.
It is terrific to hear works in progress, like artist's sketches.
