It's easy to wait for news from the digest without making any
effort to
contribute. Lately, as I have been traveling and living on the
road on
extended business trips, I have been working my way through
Lanois'
production work with Dylan, Gabriel, Harris, Neville Brothers,
U2, and
noting how certain musicians and technicians tend to show up on a
lot of my
favorite records. Malcolm Burn produced an early Blue Rodeo
record,
Diamond Mine, and made a good contribution to the hyped Patti
Smith
comeback record, while Pierre Marchand has done some interesting
work with
Sarah Mclaughlin, bringing in Bill Dillon on guitar on her two
albums.
Daryl Johnson did work with Nusrat Al Fateh Ali Khan (Michael
Brooks)...and
the list goes on Ron Sexsmith, Syd Straw, Neil Young singing
duets with
Emmlylou on Wrecking Ball...and Brian Eno way back at Grant Ave
making a
soundtrack about the Apollo landings. Such strange pollinations
and
cross-fertilizations. It's a measure of my stupidity, but I never
paid
much attention in the past to liner notes. But now I pore over
them
carefully, looking for patterns and people, trying to make
connections
among records and studios, wondering what the alliances are, who
the real
talents are, and how the music evolves in the process. I guess
I'm
developing a hobby.

Hello,
I think I've posted once before, but I've never formally
introduced
myself. My name is Keith Hanlon. I fisrt got into DL through his
work
with Eno and U2. DL and Todd Rundgren both insired me to study
audio
engineering in college. At the moment, I am not using that
degree, but
playing my instrument, the drumset.
I was lucky to see DL at Mountain Stage in West Virginia. After
the show,
the lights went up, I turn around, and there he is.... two rows
behind me,
waiting to sign autographs and meet his fans. He autographed my
copy of
Acadie ("Hello Keith. Love, D Lanois"). I remember him
being extremely
sweet to my (then) girlfriend! He wrote "To the most
beautiful Mary.
Love, D Lanois." Needless to say, she was in love! :)
I'd love to see Daniel Lanois work with PJ Harvey, Sonic Youth,
or Nick
Cave.
It's a pleasure to meet all of you!
Keith

Hey All, The track "Home" on the new Oil CD, features
Emmylou guesting on
vocals , and has a similar feel to "Wrecking Ball"!
What a pleasant surprise.
It is , as is the entire record, beautifully played and produced.
Highly
recommended! It is a turning point for Midnight Oil, I believe.

relationship to environmentalism and social responsibility. )
Great work by
Malcolm Burn.

Hi!
I'm new to the list and probably will be a lurker for the most
part, but just wanted to introduce myself. I came across Daniel
Lanois after I saw he did production work for Peter Gabriel and
then
heard his one song of the "Plus from Us" compilation. I
thought I
would try out "Wynonna" - didn't necessarily like it at
first, but it
has grown on me over the last couple of years to become one of my
favorite CDs. Until I came across the Lanois site, though, I had
kind-of been in the dark on many of the lyrics. Oh well...
I have heard some of Lanois' songs on various TV shows and
advertisements. Last year, "Brother L.A." was on
Entertainment
Tonight. And this past summer, "When the Hawkwind
Kills" was used by
NBC to advertise some show. So, I guess his solo work was more
popular than I thought. Looking forward to the instrumental, but
hope
he comes out with a new vocal album soon.
Other groups that I like include mostly 80's carryovers. a-ha
ranks right up there - no, they were not one-hit wonders, but
have put
out 6 CD's since "Take on Me" including a grunge-like
album in a
shoot-off group called Savoy just this year. Other groups include
Simple Minds, Peter Gabriel, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Seal, and
Genesis/Phil Collins/Mike and the Mechanics.
I look forward to receiving the Acadie digests! Thanks!

Dear Acadiites,
I don't know how many of you ordered cassettes from Billy's
recording
of the WKCR radio show that Dan hosted but it was excellent and
really gave me a better idea about the man himself and his roots
and
gen. vibe.
I'm not going to bore you with the details but I strongly
recommend
it to you.
I loved to hear that he we have very similar music tastes across
the
board including some music that I consider quite un Lanoisesque
e.g
Rick James, the Time and Stevie Wonder... all heroes of mine in
party
mode.
Sink your teeth in.
Suren
ps Thanks Billy...what a star
