If you are looking to see how diverse DL can be in his production work,
I highly recommend picking up the self-titled COYOTE SHIVERS disc. It
was released by MUTINY RECORDS and it has one song produced by DL as
well as engineered and mixed by him. The whole album is great. Dig deep
to find the influences.

If you like Lanois - check out Stina Nordenstam's new album "Dynamite". It
is - not far from the title - pure dynamite. Very different from the
previous smooth and often so predictable soundscapes. Yes - it is very
ambient with LOTs of soul and emotion in it. Yes - it is very nicely
produced with very nice lanoesque side in it. (pretty much distortion and
effects for an example in the string section) Yes - it is very naive and
filled with minimalism which makes you smile. But compared to old Stina
Nordenstam it is rock in very wicked kind of way. Highly recommented.

Hi,

I'm writing to you guys for the first time and want to take the
opportunity to congratulate you on this terrific mailing-list.

I got into Daniel's production/music in the late 80s. After seeing him
live in my hometown in Helsinki, Finland in the summer 1993 I became a
100% Danhead. The Emmylou Harris record is wonderful and I was lucky
enough to catch her in concert a few months ago. The band didn't feature
Daniel himself but his spirit was there as well as the fabulous rhythm
section from his band. I actually played that night with the country band
that was supporting her and got to meet the band. The guitar player was
really good - a chap named Buddy Miller. Darryl Johnson mentioned that
Daniel has moved to California and has built a studio there (something
you probably know by now). The possible Dylan/Lanois collabaration though
is all new info as far as I'm concerned. Would anybody know any further
details?

I mentioned I'm a musician myself and I bet there are other players out
there too. It would be cool to hear from you guys. I play guitar, sing
and write songs as well us spend a lot of time experimenting with
different sounds etc. I must also confess that I'm a vintage guitar
-freak. I know, for instance, something about Daniel's guitars, amps and the
devices he uses. So, if you're interested just let me know!

That's all for now. Cheers, ya all!

Hi all,

Peter Gabriel is back in the studio right now for final
recording of his next album. Seeing as how Mr Lanois
'helped' him produce his last two song-albums, I can't
help wondering if he will be doing the same this time.
No one on the PG mailing list seems to know who is
involved, so I was wondering if anyone here knows if
DL is doing his thang over at Real World studios??

Cheers,

Richard

In a message dated 96-11-03 18:12:13 EST, you write:

< I was just wondering, I noticed that U2 wasn't using Eno or Lanois
< for the recording of their new album(At least I believe i recall seeing
< this) and I was wondering what everyone thought this would do to their
< work. It seems some of U2's more mature material was from Unforgettable
< Fire onwards, which is when Lanois and Eno appeared on the scene. What
< does anyone think about this effecting their sound?

They've been veering off into another direction since the mid-period U2
(Fire/J. Tree) anyway, and this almost seems to finalize it, although I am
saddened by the fact that Eno has bowed out of the whole project altogether.
The new producers, Howie B. and Nellee Hooper (the latter of Bjork
production fame) haven't done anything that has really caught my ear,
personally. I don't really care for Nellee Hooper's production style on the
Bjork CDs, so honestly, I don't anticipate enjoying the production. Then
again, I also don't care for the Passengers CD (I found it uninvolving and
lacking sonic depth) and only really enjoyed a handful of songs on "Zooropa",
so this contributes to my lack of enthusiasm regarding the new U2 album
anyway. I think it's great that U2 continues to grow and stretch, remaining
a relevant, fresh group. I just don't care for the recent direction!
Personally, I think that the production on the James "Laid" album by Eno was
brilliant. It was warm, groove-oriented, enveloping, and interesting, and
understated -- and I had hoped that U2 would pursue this direction a little
more, rather than going for slightly colder sorts of sounds.

My opinions. As of today. Subject to change. <g>

Subject: Daniel and Bob Dylan

On the recent wkcr radio show, Daniel played Dylan's "Sad Eyed Lady of the
Low Land" and said (to Dylan as if he was listening in) "Bob, you're the
greatest man ..."
He then expressed his desire to work with Dylan on his next record, but
implied that nothing was definite at that time.
Let's hope for this to come to fruiton.
I say, Daniel, you too are the greatest, man. God bless.
