Not an editorial message but rather a small update of Dan's
current activity. As many of you have gathered/rumored, he has
had some discussions and done some preproduction work with Bob
Dylan but nothing is firm about what will come of it.
Daniel produced and recorded with Geoffrey Oryema earlier this
year. The song can be found on his album entitled "Night to
Night" on the RealWorld label.
As I have said before, the "Sling Blade" soundtrack
will be out this month on Island Records in conjunction with the
movie.
Kenley Rumor: possibility that Daniel may work with Ricki Lee
Jones.
Thanks for your continued participation.
Kenley

Hello All,
I previously wrote that I had some reservations about the
"Fever In Fever
Out" project Daniel did with LJ. Now I'd like to report that
the cd has
really grown on me, and I'd like to recommend it.
A learning experience for me with this record is to remember to
let go of
my expectations and take the music on it's own terms. This is a
challenge as
I am a musician and seek the balance between being a listener and
a creator.
This is easier at certain times than at others, eh? Also, not all
music is
nourishing at all times. Sometimes I want sweet, other times
crunchy.
The sound of the LJ record is modern/urban. (Ha! I make myself
chuckle...what does this mean?) The songs have a mellow hip hop
style and
cool moody feel to almost every track. "Faith"
especially stands out with
it's deep groove and inspiring lyrics.
So, I stand with a different perspective about the project and
hope you all
check it out.
Peace everyone.

Hi Guys!
I have been on this list since it started, but have hardly
posted.
I am a big Daniel fan, love both his albums and almost all the
production work
of his with U2, Neville Bros, Bob Dylan, Gabriel, and now I
recently found out
that he had also produced Robbie Robertsons first album, which is
one of my
favorites. I never knew or realized that Lanois produced.
Besides these guys who else has Lanois produced for
I know Emmy Lou Harris is one
I would love to see Lanois work with Michael Brooks. I think
Brooks is
wonderful too. Just check out his work with Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn
on his new
album "Night Songs". Just brings tears to my eyes, the
music is great and the
delivery of words is unbelievable. PLUS: I understand all the
lyrics too :-)

1. Lauri's recommended pick "Stina Nordenstam." Lauri,
what label is
(s)he on? We Americans will try to find her in the "World
Music" section.
Hmmm, do you find Daniel Lanois in the Finnish music store under
"World
Music"? :)
2. Ken's reaction to James' "Laid". I second the
(e)motion. That album
reminds me so much of the now defunct Waterboys. I secretly wish
that
James' would write fewer "banana eating" songs and
suddenly veer off into
spiritualism and become the Waterboys! Just wishful thinking...

Hey there!
Got the new album by Jimmie Dale Gilmour yesterday, and i's
fabulous.
Add this to your list of Lanois inspired production. Production
is from
T-Bone Burnett, and includes the creative Jim Keltner on drums.
Jimmie is from Lubbock, Texas, and has a voice not unlike Willie
Nelson.
He was a member of the Flatlanders (with Joe Ely and Butch
Hancock). This
new album is indeed a new direction for Filmour. Check it out.

Dear Dan-sciples,
I have heard that Zakir Hussian and Daniel Lanois are involved on
the
new Dylan record. This is to be confirmed shortly.
Just returned from NO myself and paid a visit to Kingsway Studio(
Mecca)....couldn't get in.There was no answer to the door bell.It
is
a great place as some of you know.
I heard a guitar being played ......... but no luck.
He has not been in N Orleans much of late and has been spending
more
time in NYC and Oxnard, CA .
Just bought the Luscious Jackson record which is quite trippy and
has a cool dark groove. After one listen it is hard to comment so
far
but really shows the breadth of Dan's talents.
For fans of the NO sound, a frequently underrated LP is Brother's
Keeper by the Neville's which I thought had a very
Lanny/Lanoisque feel
Discovered who the producer was ...... Malcolm Burn (
Surprise,surprise)
For real ELH fans who are worried about taking the next move(very
bold one) after the brilliant DL collab...... try Live at the
Ryman.
Its very different but brilliant .
Happy listening
Suren

Wow - I can hardly believe that this list is over a year old -
meaning
that this past year has flown by! Congratulations to Kenley for a
great list - informative, fun, and well-behaved :)
Much to the relief of many of you (and me!), I'm celebrating by
finally
finishing the lyric updates and sending them off to Kenley :) You
can look
for them soon :)
The Luscious Jackson CD has REALLY grown on me - I bought it
after just
one semi-listening experience at a music store - very very nifty!
I love
the sounds created - like someone mentioned, it does sound rather
Froom-y
but also reminds me a lot of the Tricky CD "Maxinquaye"
with the so-called
'trip-hop' sound. I haven't really delved into the lyrics yet,
but with
the music sounding as good as this, I think lyrics could only add
to it.
Mark up another success for Dan! :) "Naked Eye" has
been getting some
airplay here in Phx - I've actually heard it three times and I
hardly
listen to the radio for lack of any really good stations here.
Wondering where the past year has gone -
Ant :)

Allo to you all,
I'm a Daniel Lanois fan for many years now and I was wondering
what he's
been doing lately and were he could be now. I miss him a lot and
hope he's working on
something new that I will be able to listen too with the same
passion has the two
previous one. Back here in Gatineau (next to Hull) were are a lot
of people who are
waiting anxiously for a new record and an another «visit».
In case by any chance Daniel would see that message :
Tu es un artiste admirable et à qui je dit merci pour tout les
beaux instants que j'ai en
écoutant tes merveilleux disques et aussi merci pour
l'inspiration que tu m'apporte.
Jespère pouvoir te revoir bientôt dans la région. Reviens-nous
vite s'il-te-plaît!
