Hello,

I wanted to write to ask if anyone knew of a connection between
David Sylvian and Daniel Lanois. In Sylvians most recent work "The First
Day" which eh does with Robert Fripp, Daniel is one of the people they
thank. Does anyone know anything about this? Do Lanois and Sylvian talk?
Just wondering. By the way, the first day is a great album if anyone is
interested in a different sort of "pop" music. I don't know fully how to
describe the album but it definitely grabs you.

I wish lanois would do more work with Brooks as well. Brooks is
such an incredible guitar player and the two of them would be great. From
the mixture already seen on Brook's album "Cobalt Blue" you can see that
the minds mix well. Also, Brooks plays great back up guitar for Sylvian
and Fripp on the live album "Damage" if anyone is interested.

Lastly, someone said Peter Gabriel is in the studio working on new
album material. I hope so much that this is true, I could really use a
new Gabriel album. OKay, take care all.

***Still Water

Sad eyes, sad eyes
Where're you going with that confidence?
Sad eyes, sad eyes
Where're you going with that confidence?

I'm going to where the boats go by
Caledonia river flow so wide
I'm going to where the boats go by
Caledonia river flow so wide

Still water - Laying over
Still water - Laying over
Still water - Laying over
Caledonia river oh, so wide

Wild eyes in the wilderness
Where're you going with the devil in hand?
Wild eyes in the wilderness
Where're you going with the devil in hand?

I'm going to build the bridges high
for working money, for working money
I'm going to climb the bridges high
Caledonia brother far away

Still water - I'm laying over
Still water - Lay my body down over
Still water - Laying over
Caledonia river far away...

Sad eyes in the weary night
Have you seen your brother,
have you seen your brother?
Waiting by the river Grand
Caledonia river oh, so wide

Going to where the rain falls
Look for my brother,
look for my brother
Going to where the rain falls
Caledonia river far away

Still water - Laying over
Still water - Lay my body down
Still water - Laying over
Caledonia river far away...

***The Maker

Oh, oh deep water, black and cold like the night
I stand with arms wide open,
I've run a twisted line
I'm a stranger in the eyes of the Maker

I could not see for the fog in my eyes
I could not feel for the fear in my life
And from across the great divide, In the distance I saw a light
Jean Baptiste's walking to me with the Maker

My body is bent and broken by long and dangerous sleep
I can't work the fields of Abraham and turn my head away
I'm not a stranger in the hands of the Maker

Brother John, have you seen the homeless daughters
Standing there with broken wings
I have seen the flaming swords
there over east of eden

Burning in the eyes of the Maker
Burning in the eyes of the Maker
Burning in the eyes of the Maker...

Oh, river rise from your sleep...

***O Marie

***English Translation

[I left the word 'hostie' as it was - didn't want to make any waves
as we discussed earlier, and after hearing some people's description
of the word thought it would be best this way as it doesn't really have
a comparable English word...? What do you think?]

There's someone calling my name,
there's someone calling my name,
We're working today, we work in the rain
We're picking tobacco, hostie!

My hands are black as a dirty pig,
my hands are black as a dirty pig
thirty days and thirty nights
We're picking tobacco, hostie!

Yes, my girlfriend is waiting for me,
yes, my girlfriend is waiting for me
I'm going to return with lots of money
We're picking tobacco, hostie!

Oh driver give me a chance,
oh driver give me a chance
Do you have a light for my cigarette?
We're picking tobacco, hostie!

Tonight, we're going to town,
yes, tonight, we're going to town
to sing songs, to drink booze
We're picking tobacco, hostie!

O Marie, I've got a headache,
O Marie, I've got a headache
Give us the spirit, the spirit of the body
We're picking tobacco, Marie!

The blue of the sky changed,
the blue of the sky changed
After forty days and forty nights
We can't pick tobacco

There's someone calling my name,
there's someone calling my name
We're working today, we work in the rain
We're picking tobacco

And one day, the foreman said

Et pis mon nom, y est pas bon

Oh Louise, I'm losing my head,
I'm losing my head

My kids are small, 4 and 3
et la bouteille, she's mon ami
I drink the rum 'tilI I can't see
It hides the shame Louise does not see
Carousel turns in my head,
and I can't hide, oh no, no, no, no
And the rage turned in my head
and Louise, I struck her down,
down on the ground
I'm losing my mind, I'm losing my mind

Ontario, they did go

Now my tears, they roll down,

Oh Louise, ma jolie Louise, ma jolie Louise.

***Fisherman's Daughter

[Spoken Poem]

I laid awake a whole night long,
waiting for the sun to beat down on my head
in this broken bed

I laid awake and dreamt of ships
passing through night,
searching for shelter,
stopping at no harbor

I heard the screaming waters
call sixty sailors' names
Raging words, pounding on the sail
like an angry whale

I felt the iron rudder skip
the smell of seeping oil,
the heat of slipping rope.
Failing hands, failing hope

Every sailor asks...
asks the question about the cargo
he is carrying

God's anger broke through the clouds
and He spilt the cargo for all to see -

The fault of the sailor,
the fault of he who asks no questions
about the cargo he is carrying

Fishes and tales and a fisherman's daughter
walks in the rain, she walks to the water
to the sea...

From: "Wm. R. Burke II" <73513.3043@compuserve.com>
Subject: White Mustang II transcription

The following is an interpretive transcription of White Mustang II from
Acadie. It doesn't really have a steady meter and Daniel isn't always
playing the bass note on the beat although he does start out that way. This
is not a complete transcription but it does complete one verse. The
strangest thing about this song is the tuning, DADAEG, low to high. I'm
not sure how he would have arrived at this tuning other than by accident. I
would not recommend this tuning on a guitar with really old strings because
the tension on the first and second strings is so much greater than usual.
I decoded this tuning by picking out the sound of the open strings and by
harmonics he plays throughout the song. If anyone has questions feel free
to ask. I encourage experimenting with this tuning and using chord shapes
from standard tuning as some work out nicely.

***Where The Hawkwind Kills

The severed walls are closing in
I've looked at you and I've seen you
through your curtain

With a naked eye from not far,
I've shed a tear for you,
a flowing fountain

Flaming trees,
I'm lost in fields of your hair

>From where the hawkwinds kill
and the blood runs thin
I'll go now, fly I will

>From inside the gates of the stripping yard
I can't touch you, I can't feel for this thunder town
I want you now while my body is young,
my mind is strong away from thunder town

>From where the hawkwind kills
and the dam runs deep
In this land of heaven, not so sweet

I turn my back to a godless night
I hear the mighty stranger over thunder hill

>From where the hawkwinds kill
and the blood runs thin
I'll go now, fly I will...

Over the mountain I must go
To see the valley below
Thunder town...

***Silium's Hill

Shoe Shine Mamma
Spits for her money
Wants to make a living
Try to make her own

All she ever wanted was to
make her own money and
settle down on Silium's Hill

She prayed by the water on Manitou Bay
Sipping ambrosia on a holy night
Counting the lovers that had passed her way
They could not see her on Silium's Hill

On a frozen lamp pole I scratch her name -
With my rusty old penknife
on a empty heart
Standing by the window, is that you out there
at the Southern Cross over Silium's Hill

Oh, baby will you ride with me
Through the wheat towns to Medicine Hat
When the cold winds blow I'll be there
I'll hang on tight, baby sure go for that

Now the old man knocks at my front door,
Shoe Shine Mamma isn't here anymore
There's a stranger in my place
looking out over Silium's Way...

Listen to the humming of the railway cars
My hands frozen on the wheel
600 miles away from home
running on the shadow of Silium's Hill

Somewhere back on Church Street
Shoe Shine Mamma spits for her money
Trying to make a living, wanna make her own
Down at the bottom of Silium's Hill

Mamma wanna build her own
down at the bottom of Silium's Hill

***Ice

Yes it's cold by the river where you lay
In this godless place I kneel down and I pray
God help us through the night
God help us through the night

Your voice would fill the night
I think of yesterday

I wanna hold you
Your worn out hands don't touch me now
Here where it's stormy but nothing

God help us through the night
God help us through the night
This foolish night in your
golden arms I wanna cry...

I want you to hold me
(It'll come - <-I _know_ this part still isn't right...
Slips through the cold night?)
Cause it's cold by the river where you lay

God help us through the night
God help us through the night
Through this foolish night in your
golden arms I wanna cry

Yes it's cold by the river where you lay

***St. Ann's Gold

With feet so cold
I feel no pain
And the Western Cross
on snow white plain

Look over yonder
the pines are down
they've laid them well
On sequoia ground

I hear the howling timber wolf
I hear the howling timber wolf

Sleepy eyes
fading light
snow white Suzy
you're my desire

You carry me back home
You carry me back home

***Amazing Grace [traditional]

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
that saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I'm found
said I was blind, but now I see

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come
twas grace that brought me safe this far
and grace shall lead me home

I once was lost, but now I'm found
said I was blind, but now,
now I see the light

I forgot to explain about the "O Marie" lyric translation: Juan had
originally translated the word "hostie" as 'fuck' - but when reading that,
it seemed kind of vulgar and we both agreed that it might cause some
discontent, especially after some of the discussion that was happening on
the list at the time we were compiling these. Most of the people who
wrote in suggestions told the story of how the word came to be and I
figured it would be best to leave it be rather than try to find an English
curse word that would fit - thus it might be good to put a small
explanation of the word before the translation? What do you think?

Subject: CAMILLA

Hey folks,

This subject may have been brought up in previous postings, but I'm too
lazy to search through the archives to find out.

Daniel Lanois and some other guy (can't remember his name) provided the
music to the film CAMILLA, starring Jessica Tandy (one of her last
films), Bridgette Fonda, and Maury Chaykin (who recently did a fantastic
film called WHALE MUSIC, music by the Rheostatics, and which I *highly*
recommend, one of the best films I've seen in years, in the same vein as
BIRDY).

The music: Instrumental versions of songs from "Wynona," plus some nice
acoustic versions of "The Messenger"---one with a female vocalist, the
other instrumental. The movie is very slow and quiet. I'd recommend it
just to here Dan's music.

CAMILLA is available on video (although you might have to dig around for
it).

Subject: inspiration for Devil's Bed?

Here is a little thing I just picked up. It is old material, but an
interesting note. I noticed in the liner notes of the soundtrack to "Until
the End of the World", that it was created by Teplin (producer) or Wenders
(director) writing to the artists and asking for them each to right a song
about the end of the world. As we well know, "Sleeping in the Devil's Bed"
is on the album (as well as the [originally] Lanois produced "Blood of
Eden"). So apparently Devil's Bed has Apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic
overrtones.
. . . Just adding to the sweetness of this earcandy,

Review of Luscious Jackson, FEVER IN FEVER OUT, in Entertainment Weekly,
Nov. 15, 1996:

Pairing this group with mainstream megaproducer Daniel Lanois seems
counterintuitive. But the strange union generally works: Though polished
(not a nice indie word), their second full-length locks into a smoother,
more strolling groove than before, with lyrics that have moved from the
occasionally strident to (at worst) the occasionally self-involved. The
result may be more funk than punk, but everyone needs a break from the most
pit.

Hi,

I've been trying to trace the lyrics to Gonna Need Somebody for quite
sometime. Does anybody have any idea? The song is featured on that
documentary by Philip King which name I can't recall while writing this.
Is the song featured on any single, as a "B-side"? Anyway, it's a
beatiful song and it just makes me wonder why Daniel chose to drop the
song off the album "For The Beauty Of Wynona"...

Hello everyone--

I'm new to the list, and it's great to see that there are other
like-minded people who have an appreciation for Daniel's music and
production.

I hope that the new Dylan album pans out...Oh Mercy was wonderful,
although I still don't understand why Bob chose to leave "Series of
Dreams" off the album. What a perfect song, and a perfect production.

Has anyone heard Midnight Oil's new album, which I've heard was produced
by Malcolm Burn? As I said, I'm new to the list, so I assume you all
have discussed Malcolm's work, such as his production of the Charlie
Sexton Sextet's "Under the Wishing Tree."

I'm a musician and I'm really into recording as well. Of course, Daniel
is a BIG influence, although it may not show in a lot of my work.
Anyone else influenced by Dan?

Thanks to everyone for the LJ recommendations. I'm going to go right out

In the credits for the new Shawn Colvin album (an amazing, darker record
for her - kinda "Froomy"), who is thanked but Malcolm Burn and Darryl
Johnson. Anyone have any information?

I'd also like to recommend Brian Eno's published diary from 1995, called
"A Year of Swollen Appendices." Not much mention of DL, but he talks alot
about working with Bowie, James, and the Passengers project.

I've never heard James' "Laid," but if it reminds someone out there of the
Waterboys, then count me in! I only wish Mike Scott's last album was as
good as I hoped it would be.... He probably needs to work with a great
producer. Hhhmmm... who would you recommend?
