Subject: Re: ACADIE Digest, Number 49 [Sling Blade]
There was a little snippet of Lanois in last week's Billboard
magazine,
commenting on how "Sling Blade" brought forth "the
ideas of characters' from
The Old Testament"..and "I was going for a Ry Cooder
"Paris,Texas"
feel"..(paraphrased). Interesting! Now, how about about a
discussion on our
thoughts of "Fever In Fever Out" and "Sling
Blade"? Personally, I have
declined purchasing "Fever" after hearing a promo. 3
song sampler. I felt the
group's efforts were really lacking in lyrical and musical
richness,
something I have grown accustomed to in Lanois collaborations.
Bland vocals
with un-emotional novice musicianship couldn't seem to be
energized even with
Lanois' helping hand. "Sling Blade" on the other hand
is an excellent first
offering of Lanois' filmic ideas of music-something I hope he
continues.
Consistent great guitar tones and ambient arrangements, although
I was hoping
for some lyrical contributions on this one. And just who is this
Tim Gibbons
fellow?-"Lonely One" is a great track!
That's all for now-take care!

Greetings:
I should have the "Sling Blade" soundtrack in my hands
today (I hope!).
I've seen the movie twice and man, the score is incredible!
Totally
perfect for the film. I've never even been all that familiar with
his
work (I knew he did work with Eno and U2 but that's about it). I
have a
fond appreciation for his work now. Very cool.
Sincerely,

Salut!
You translated the first 2 lines of "Stormy" by:
>Hay Bebette, dance with me
>tonight we're gonna sleep
It is correct to translate "fais dodo" by
"sleep", but it might not be what
DL meant. As I explained before (when there were only about 40 of
us
Acadiens), a "fais dodo" was, in Louisiana, a cajun
party. It was held in a
barn and people were eating, playing music and dancing all night.
They gave
this name to that celebration because the woman taking care of
the kids was
lulling them to sleep, and was singing the song "Fais
dodo".
>I forgot to explain about the "O Marie" lyric
translation: Juan had
>originally translated the word "hostie" as 'fuck'
... I
>figured it would be best to leave it be rather than try to
find an English
>curse word that would fit...
You're so right, Ant, there's no way you could translate that! We
Quebecois
swear by using all the ecclesiastical vocabulary. We just change
the
pronunciation a little bit and the spelling of the word. Hostie
is "host",
the sacred bread, in English. The quebecois swear looses the
"h" and spells
ostie, as in "Ostid'show" one of the first show of the
modern era in
quebecois music (!). Ostie is a strong swear, so Juan gave a good
equivalent of it.
A few weeks ago, somebody was talking about Zachary Richard's
last Engligh
album. I read a more than excellent review on the last French
one, Cap
Enrage - I will spare you from my translation of the review. If
Acadie
means more to you than only the title of an album, you might like
that CD.
I didn't buy it, but I heard one song last summer when I was in
Acadie:
pure merveille (and I usually don't like so much Richard's
music). The
magnificent landscapes of Acadie (the part of Acadie that is in
Cheticamp,
Nova-Scotia) combined with the melancholy of the song was more
than
staggering... (sigh!). And you don't have to understand one
single word of
French to appreciate that song, and probably the whole CD. You
just have to
close your eyes, and open your heart...
For folk music lovers, there was another very very good review on
the
McGarrigle sisters' new album, Matapedia. They've been invited to
Kingsway
studio, they did the harmony vocals on EH's "Waltz".
They sing Anna's
"Goin' back to Harlan" on their latest album. Once
again, a (mainly) French
album. I don't know if you can find it where you are. Send e-mail
if you
want more info.

Subject: Emmylou's band in -97?
Hi,
I just heard that Emmylou will be playing at the Olympia here in
Dublin
on the 2nd of February. Would anybody out there know about her
band's
line-up? Will it the same as this summer or will it include our
man Daniel
as well?
By the way, I recommend Buddy Miller's (played guitar with
emmylou this
summer) solo album to anybody who's even a little
country-oriented
(music-wise, that is) - it's awesome. And another REALLY good
album:
Gillian Welch's new record (produced by T-Bone Burnett).
Excellent stuff...
Cheers,
Markus Nordenstreng

"Wow! Never expected to have JDG pop up here... I'm a native

guy to chum with as well). Are you saying that Lanois has
produced for him? Or just that their production styles are
similar?"
Just that the production is similiar, in my opinion. It's a
departure for
JDG - very moody, lots of interesting sounds and textures...

Malcom Burn appears again as co-producer of Patti Smith's latest

remembers Patti
Smith (NOT Smyth), and may even like what she has done in the

Malcom seems to have added a nice ambience to her work that
smacks of
her earlier works--it puts a big smile on my face...**:)**

Subject: James/LJ/Brook
Hi all,
1. I think _Laid_ is near perfect, and _Wah Wah_ an equal joy.
Eno is
producing their third album with Steven Hague, which should be
more of a
return to James' "electric" material.
2. Despite the neat production, I think _Fever In, Fever Out_ is
only as
good as the band; in Luscious Jackson's case, not that good. None
of the
songs really go anywhere, though if I heard it on the radio I
don't think
I would change the station.
3. Whoever suggested that Lanois work with Michael Brook, he has:
on
Brook's Hybrid and Cobalt Blue albums, with Eno as well.
4. I'm also looking forward to the new Oryema; his first two
albums are
favorites of mine.
5. Am I the only one who thinks Malcolm Burn missed the boat on
the
Midnight Oil disc? So far it's the only MO album I truly dislike.
I think
Burn should have given it a bit more "oomph," like on
Mellancamp's _Human
Wheels_.
6. Lanois gets thanked on Joe Henry's last disc, which boasts a
very
"Lanois-y" feel.

***The Messenger
Got a letter from a messenger
I read it when it came
It said that you were wounded,
you were bound and chained
You had loved and you were handled
You were poisoned, you were pained
oh no, oh no -
you were naked, you were shamed
You could almost touch heaven
right there in front of you
liberty just slipped away on us
now there's so much work to do
Oh the door that closes tightly
is the door that can swing wide
oh no, oh no -
Not expecting to collide
For a minute I let my guard down
not afraid to be found out
Completely forgotten
what our fears were all about
oh no, oh no -
There's no need to be without
There's a chance and I will take it
this desire I can't kill
Take my heart, please don't break it
I will crawl to your foothill
I'm frightened but I'm coming,
please baby, please lay still
oh no, oh no -
Not coming for the kill
oh no, oh no -
Not coming for the kill
oh no, oh no -
Not coming for the kill
***Brother L.A.
Brother you wait up late
when you finish the midnight shift
and you try to put out the hate
and you know it's going to drift
Brother you're going down
down from the fountain blue
you can call on the one
the one that you
It feels right with you my brother
it feels right when you're right here
No, I don't want to know
every mountain, every fear
(?) brother who can always pick you up
Who can fill your pocket
when you're all messed up
The sea that promises defeat
is the flood that will come
The heat that keeps your habit warm
is the flame that will burn
Are you wearing your filters?
Are you changing your clothes?
Are you wearing your colors?
So that nobody knows
Oh brother, brother, brother,
brother of mine
(?) brother, who'll pick me up
Fill my pockets when I'm all messed up
Invitation you don't have to hide no more
Gimme something I don't mind
you can lay it down on me
You can say it I wanna know...
Oh brother, brother, brother
brother of mine
Oh sister, sister, sister
sister of mine...
look for my brother
look for my brother
look for my brother
look for my brother
***Still Learning How to Crawl
I looked at you, your lips were moving
but I did not hear what you said
you wanted me, you wanted my name
I was carrying two feet of lead
See the rising sun on this make-believe town
white shoe shine and leather, both of us so brown
I was in the water, you were dry
you yelled my name now I know why
I'm still learning how to crawl
I'm still learning how to crawl
If that big drum, drum is rumbling
keep me in line, keep me from stumbling
when I first went down, everything was right
skinny white leg, laying on my bed
over there running, afraid to be found out
Tasting everything with a scream and shout
all I wanted I rejected
drinking from a cup of (?)
I'm learning how to crawl
I'm still learning how to crawl
He ain't comin' in, 'til you lay the table
He ain't comin' in, not comin' to watch me fall
The killer moves in, moves right into your face
When everything seems to be in its right place
Can't wait for love, love to be king
Can't wait for the love, to come with its sting
You blew away in your blue dress
I lost the one that I loved best
I'm still learning how to crawl
I'm just learning how to crawl
I'm still learning how to crawl
I'm just learning how to crawl...
***Beatrice
Beatrice come over here, come and lay yourself down
yea tell me all about it to that lonesome sound
Take a look outside, it's all a bit crazy
People are real nervous, too nervous to talk to a mother's son.
Beatrice let's get dressed, Take a look at what's been done
yea you got me thinking about what I don't want to know
Beating of the chest, snake rising in the patriot's nest
Doing what's best, kicking out the face of a mother's son.
Beatrice I like your smile, makes me want to own you
Well okay just for a while then, before they stone you
Tell me, how do you speak to God?
How do you speak to God -
when you're down there on the floor
singing the song of a mother's son
singin' out now (repeat)
***The Collection of Marie Claire
Marie-Claire, j'ai marche toute la soiree
Ton portrait toujours pres de mon coeur
Je veux te dire que je t'ai reve tout l'ete
Marie-Claire, s'il te plait, n'est pas peur.
I brought you some colours to paint with
On the nights when it's cold outside
And I'll shoot that blue-eyed son of a bitch
'Cause it's me who'll have you for his bride
Marie-Claire, it's no good la vie d'une danseuse
Tous les yeux, they're on you, I can't stand
Don't you know that you are my amoureuse.
Marie Claire, let them all be damned.
My hands have bled to the bone
I brought you a drawing to see
Of the cabin made of sticks and stones,
And there you will learn to love me.
Marie Claire, j'ai sale beaucoup d' poissons
Et les bois du Nord maintenant sont tranquilles
Je te promet de ne pas boire la boisson
Oublie le Montreal, la vieille ville.
As I lay you there on the backseat,
All in white there, dans mon char
Take your time Marie Claire and sleep,
As I bring you up to Labrador.
***Death of A Train
Union Station, tombstone high
No more tears, this fountain dry
Nameless faces, just headlines
We don't ride that train no more
No resistance, turn my head
They could go out East instead
Newfoundland, land of my father
I don't ride your train no more
Cold steel shining, Battle Creek
Eyes are heavy, rain and sea
Massey-Ferguson memories
Don't ride that train no more
Hey there captain, is that you
Could you tell me, tell me what to do
I been twenty years on that Soo line
We don't ride your train no more
Smoke rises from the face of sand
dreams about, dreams of beaver dams
Sam can't hear quite like he used to
Tell them why we don't ride no more
Hey Pierre Trudeau oh, where are you?
My friend to lead us through
these hard times, so much confusion
I don't hear your train no more
I can't ride no more... (repeat)
***The Unbreakable Chain
You wake up and there's something there tugging at your sleeve
It's not the pitter-patter of the one in your dreams
Held on by the chain, the unbreakable chain
Held there by the chain, the unbreakable chain
You walk and you know that the wind is not passing you by
It's speaking and you listen and the tears don't come out when
you cry
cry cry cryin won't break the unbreakable chain
cryin won't break the unbreakable chain
It's thirty years ago and you live with your decision
You talk to him in a prayer - you send out your transmission
But a prayer won't break the unbreakable chain,
Your prayers won't break the unbreakable chain
Your baby's not yours but he walks the streets of your city
He wants to know you, there's no self pity
It's pulling at your heart, the unbreakable chain
pulling at your heart, with the unbreakable chain
And you, you put an ad in the paper - it's foolish but maybe
maybe he'll see cause he's searching for mama mi
oh mama here, mama feel the unbreakable chain
mama feel the unbreakable chain
You can't believe that it's now, it's turned itself around
You're frightened of the way that you look, but you meet him
there in town
Oh, the joy and the fear of the unfailable pain
The joy and the fear of the unfailable pain
He stares at you and you step back and no words are spoken
You say hello to your boy and he says 'Mama you've awoken'
ah, yes you have broken the unbreakable chain -
yes you have broken the unbreakable chain
You have broken the unbreakable chain
yeah, you have broken the unbreakable chain.
***Lotta Love to Give
I'm watching the rain clouds in the sky roll in
I'm sick of these red pills, sick of the dealer's grin
Daniel, Daniel by the bonfires
On the telephone wire she's callin' you sayin'
Hey I got a lotta love to give
You walked up to me and said did I make a mistake
I feel so naked I could use a twist of fate
There's a sermon that I heard the other day,
confused me so I looked the other way
I'm watchin' you now with a whole lotta love to give
I'm half crazy, eyes are heavy
If I can't be with you I would much rather be very dead
Please don't break it, could you make it
into something that fits into your very pretty head
Oh, I'm half crazy, eyes are heavy
If I can't be with you I would much rather be very dead
Please don't break it, ah could you make it
into something that fits into your very pretty head
Just tryin' to write it down while I still remember
The winds are cold, but not yet, it's not yet December
Fireballs bursting in the sky, Wasaga Beach, first of July,
you said to me, hey I gotta whole lotta love to give
***Indian Red
Mighty cooty fiyo - hey la hey, hey la hey
I've got a Big Chief, Big Chief, Big Chief of the Nation
Wild, wild creation
He won't bow down, down on the ground
Oh how I love to hear him call Indian Red
When I throw my net in the river
I will take only what I need
Just enough for me and my lover
I will take only what I need
Sing:
Mighty cooty fiyo - hey la hey, hey la hey
Mighty cooty fiyo - hey la hey, hey la hey
Mighty cooty fiyo - hey la hey, hey la hey
Mighty cooty fiyo - hey la hey, hey la hey
***Sleeping in the Devil's Bed
I thought of you in blue and red
I thought of you when you were playing
I thought of you in my bed
You were there, bound and chained
I thought of you there next to me
wearing your pretty face
I thought of everything you could be
Sleeping in the devil's bed
I looked at you when lights were low
and I payed for what I had
I looked at you way down below
till I felt I was going mad
I think of you when I tell myself
and the fever rises high
I think of you and I get what's comin'
Sleeping in the devil's bed
[For the version on the "Until The End of the World"
soundtrack,
these 'extra' lyrics were included here: ]
I thought of you up there on the ladder
I thought of you when I heard the news
I thought of you and it didn't matter -
If I accepted, you'll refuse
I wanted you and I wanted more
I wanted everything
I wanted what I couldn't get (give?)
Sleeping in the devil's bed
In the devil's bed
I woke up in the steady rain
I woke up when you said
It's late and I'm feeling heavy,
could you hold my aching head...
I found myself tangled in wire
I found you there in my dream
I found you in desire
You had left the devil's bed
You had left the devil's bed
You had left the devil's bed
***For The Beauty of Wynona
The ingots are burning red
I'm working time and a half
Tomorrow I'll stay in bed,
what a hell it is, what a life
I burn my fingers, why don't you
laugh with the rest who know it well
I tripped and then I fell for
the beauty of Wynona
At night I toss and I turn
and I try and dial your number
It's changed and God only knows
where you been since last December
Where you been with that twisted smile
throwing your mother in the pond
Break him easy when he go down for
the beauty of Wynona
Girls they skip double dutch
They saw you go, mama gone
Our prayers don't mean nothin' much
to the heart that cannot be won
Tangled in your fishing net
right here in my own bed
Drowning in the tears I shed for
the beauty of Wynona
***Rocky World
My hands are wrapped in your raven hair
in the faded picture on the back stair
We were narrow, we were steady, trembling and ready
to give it hell in this rocky world
You said do I look like I could be a strong mother
and raise the good side of a young daughter
In the hotel Shangri La, let me tell you
I've been thinking of her in this rocky world
Chicago is heavy but I can't turn around
I'm smuggling that whiskey over flesh and pound
Michigan I worry and Suzy I'm sorry
that I lost you out there in the rocky world
Would you build me a building, a chapel out there
at the top of the hill in the still blue air
Near the weather vane, by the track and train
I'll be looking for you in the rocky world
She's turning twenty, and out on the make
Pounding the blacktop with a habit to shake
She's looking for a manger in the eyes of a stranger
down in the streets of a rocky world
Jenny has religion, she sinks in a chair
She's made a decision to color her hair
The black man cut the sugar cane and she watches the rain
in a building away from the rocky world
Yeah, I'll tell you something I'll never forget
the sight of you in the sillhouette
Outside Saul Ste. Marie, ah you really threw me
when you pulled me down to your rocky bed
In a crowded room, I stood there empty
looking for salvation and glory be
When a shot turned my head and I saw you instead
walking into my rocky world...

Oh what I'd give, I'd give for that perfect day
Oh what I'd give to know, to know to the way
To travel on that road, without a load
Oh, Rain Weather, Rain Weather, go away
The fever rises, the curtain lies on my sleeve
Oh the fever rising high, baby gonna leave
Looking out there at the sky, I'm gonna cry, oh I'm gonna cry
Oh Rain Weather, Rain Weather, go away
Oh Rain Weather, Rain Weather, go away
Bridge--That blood is dripping, and nobody wants any stain(?)
That blood is dripping, just wash it out with the rain
Oh Rain Weather, Rain Weather, go away

Oh Rain Weather, Rain Weather, please go away
Oh Rain Weather, Rain Weather, go away
