I originally sent in the info on the Messenger Promo I think, I picked up
my copy when during one of my summer trips "down south" (which for me is in
Massachusetts and New Hampshire :) , I think I found that CD in a shop in
Hyannisport but it was a couple years ago.

Here is some more info on it, which isn't included on the webpage, the
version of Elle Est Bonne Et Belle is the same as on Rocky World. Rain
Weather (a track in some stage of development, as at one point you hear
Daniel manually prompting the band , as he actually says "bridge", to get
through it), and Another Silver Morning (an instrumental) are listed as
"non-album" tracks. Everything is written by Lanois.

Timings are: The Messenger (edit) 4:32; The Messenger (album) 5:27; Rain
Weather 3:49; Elle Est Bonne Et Belle 2:47; Another Silver Morning 4:23.
The edit of messenger basically lacks the solo, and may fade a little early
as well if I remember right.

I think that is about all that can be said about that promo. Now, what I
would like to see is a transcription of the interview(s) on the other
promos.

Here are the lyrics to Rain Weather (as I hear them):
---------------------------------

Oh what I'd give, I'd give for that perfect day
Oh what I'd give to know, to know to the way

To travel on that road, without a load
Oh, Rain Weather, Rain Weather, go away

The fever rises, the curtain lies on my sleeve
Oh the fever rising high, baby gonna leave

Looking out there at the sky, I'm gonna cry, oh I'm gonna cry
Oh Rain Weather, Rain Weather, go away
Oh Rain Weather, Rain Weather, go away

Bridge--That blood is dripping, and nobody wants any stain(?)
That blood is dripping, just wash it out with the rain
Oh Rain Weather, Rain Weather, go away

[guitar solo]

Oh Rain Weather, Rain Weather, please go away
Oh Rain Weather, Rain Weather, go away

mmm Rain Weather, Rain Weather, go away
Rain Weather, Rain Weather, please go away

Great to read other's thoughts on DL. Hi Everyone. Luscious Jackson, eh? Seems quite unusual, but so is the fact that Dan has set up a new studio in an apparently rough neighborhood in LA. I spoke with him at the Emmylou Harris show in NYC at the Beacon Theatre last November. He is, for those who don't know, a warm and gracious man. I was in a band called Roothead, with his sister Jocelyn, Robin O'Brien and Kevin Salem a couple of yearsd ago. I was the percussionist/drummer in the project. (Tabla, Tar, slit drums, congas...that sort of percussion). Did gigs in NYC at Sine' , Skep, and CBGB'S Gallery. Great band, at the edge of what would be considered potentially popular. I had hoped to work with Dan, he liked the demos we did, hence his sister's involvement butit was not to be. For now. To the musicians among us: I find that it's quite a challenge to convince engineers to be as flexible as Dan is in the studio, they!
don't like to break away from established norms in approach. I also find that audiophiles generally can't hear his proiductions with an open mind, as they have this purist mindset. Curious. Anyone else have this kind of experience? There's a nice Emmylou promo around with interview tracks and half of Wrecking Ball. The interview features Dan & Emmy, and is reall terriffic. I too would like to score some live tapes. I have cool water, and the promo w/rain weather et. al., and would gladly trade . UNtil next time. Eric.

A few weeks ago I made mention of a Promo CD I received as a limited
premium for subscribing to KCRW in Santa Monica, Ca (WWW.KCRW.ORG). The title of
the CD is Trip and it contains 14 tracks that are as follows:
Needles(*), El Conquistador, Rota, Da Luna Funk, Diego Painting, Mighty Cloud,
Bells of New Orleans, Beatrice, Two Worlds, White Mustang II, Symphonic Chords,
Romantic Tremolo, Blue Waltz, Sonho Dourado.
(*) Rosanna Arquette was a guest DJ on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic program
and played a cassette that DL had given to her when he played his L.A. House of
Blues date( or sometime surrounding that as he was in town for other dates) that
used the beginning of this song as its intro and a break in the middle. On the
playlist for that date the song was listed as Needles.

Kenley, I'm wondering how your relative fared at the ELH audition and what
it was like. After receiving the news letter I was on the phone calling everyone
I knew in N'ville that might know Monty Hitchcock to see if I could get in on
the audition myself. When I contacted him he said the position had been filled.
In my search for contacts I found out that a friend of mine had been referred by
one of their first choices (Kenny Greenburg) but I don't think he got the
position. Nashville is a town full of AMAZING guitar players that could pull-off
a Vince Gill gig in their sleep but DL is a different animal completely. I got
the feeling from some people that they were having trouble finding a
replacement and coming down to the wire with the tour schedule.

>>>>On the other hand, if you are asking if there is guitar playing that comes
close to rich melodies...<<<<< in reference to someone's inquiry about other artists
with a sound similar to lanois i would include chris whitley. his
first album, "living with the law" was produced by malcolm burn
and has dl featured on one track. chris' playing on this album is
mostly a national reso-phonic and the playing and songwriting are
both great. i wouldn't say they are cut from the same cloth so
much as they seem to have some common roots. chris whitley is
much darker than dl in his subject matter. his second album was
released about a year ago is very much a rock-band type
recording. the songs are strong and equally dark if not darker as
i think he has suffered some addictions and losses since the
first record. hendix comes to mind with both players but in
different ways. billy

Subject: Martha and the Muffins

I came across a Martha and the Muffins CD called 'Far Away in Time' in a
record store. It appears to be a compilation/best-of CD. Does anybody know
anything about it? I vaguely recall the song 'Echo Beach' from the early/mid
80's, but that's all I know of their music. I'm curious about them because
of Lanois' contribution, but I'm not sure if I want to shell out the $12.99
or whatever for a CD of 80's music that I may or may not like. Anyone heard it?

Thanks.

Peggy

Dear D.L. folks, Forgive my computer ineptness and I hope this letter
gets your way. I've been a Lanois fan for a few years now, and since I
have both solo albums, er C.D.s 'scuse me I'm from the vinyl era, anyway
having both solo efforts and the live bootleg as well, I find myself
anticipating D.L.'s next release. Living at the edge of the northern
U.S., it isn't easy to keep up with the latest musical info. It would be
great to get the newsletter to be informed of D.L.'s progressions.

              Thanks, Eric Iversen

Very well said - Check out the RealWorld catalog for great (and for the
most part _very_ well done) examples of this!

Who exactly is/are Luscious Jackson? Did they have any well known songs out?

I saw this band sometime last year. It is a group of young women playing an
almost funk sound but with a whole lot more. I only have a vague memory right
now. I do remember liking them though. I believe they are on the Beastie Boys
label Royal. They only have one previous CD. That's all I know; someone else
may correct/update me though.

If 'guitar-focused' is what you're looking for, I might suggest (if you
haven't already heard of) Chris Whitley's albums. His first was produced
by Malcolm Burn, but has a _heavy_ Lanois sound. It was recorded with
Lanois and company and has a very 'old blues-country' feel. He's (Chris)
an incredible guitar player and his lyrics are wonderful - the album is called
"Living With The Law."

Whitley's second album "Din of Ecstasy" is MUCH 'louder' and has nothing
to do with Lanois, but is still VERY good if you listen and give it a
chance. It was quite a surprise, but now I liken it to the difference
between "Acadie" and "For the Beauty..." Try it, too! :)

ALSO - another incredible guitar based band is Big Head Todd and the Monsters.
These guys are "all that," as the kids say... :) They have four
albums out on Giant Records (try "Sister Sweetly" first) but are still
relatively 'unknown'. One of the few bands that if I get started on about,
I can't shut up... :)

Not from the heart, but even deeper... I just had to repeat that well said
remark... :)

By the way - I'm keeping track of all of the lyric corrections you guys
have - and I'll be sending complete update copies to Kenley for the home
page periodically (whenever I get my act together..!). So don't worry -
you are being heard, even if there's no personal response. Keep posting! :)
