Subject: Re: Just who are Luscious Jackson, anyway?

Luscious Jackson had a song out called -- I'm sorry, I honestly don't
remember. "State of the World"? It got played on MTV quite a bit a year or
so ago. I think the name of the CD was "Natural Ingredients", and they had
this song which got played a lot which featured half-talking, half-singing,
with two main singers, and Gabby (I think) has this cool, thick, husky voice
which appealed to me, and was quite attractive, if I remember correctly.
Sorry, I can't even remember the name of my own songs...I can remember all
the musical parts, but names just float out of my head, especially if I don't
actually own the CD, as is the case here. Luscious Jackson has five females
in the band, all of whom play instruments, and seem to play a sort of
laid-back hip-hop, more "sultry" than a lot of other music of that ilk.
They're from NY and are on the Beastie Boys' Grand Royale label. There --
was that a vague enough answer? :)

Hey, Hey, Hey, all!

I just can't but help notice that there have been a lot of people saying
that they can't figure out what the e-mail addresses are. Unless you are
on some system I don't know of, you should be able to look at the address
box above and in the "From:" section, that's the address. No, you can't
immediately click onto it to send a quick reply. You have to do it the old
way: send a new message and type out that address. (We love you anyways,
Kenley!)

My recollection of Luscious Jackson: me and my friend were waiting for a
movie to go on and the theater played Luscious Jackson. It was some weird
retro disco number and we were bopping around making asses of ourselves,
but it was a really cool song--very creative. Then we watched "Seven" and
we forgot about that song. I am very much intrigued by how Lanois is going
to approach their music because they are such an upbeat, funky group, I
can't see anyone he's produced to being similar unless you count Nevilles'
funkier songs. Everything else just rocks really hard or gently. Someone
who has heard Luscious: clue us (me) in.

World music fans: there is an article on Baaba Maal in the Feb/March issue
of Dirty Linen (and the now soon to be defunct, one of my favorite bands,
Old Blind Dogs :'( ). Also, the next issue will interview Emmylou
Harris--maybe she might talk about Lanois?

bye now! Shu-Shu

We were fortunate enough to see DL twice about 2 years ago here in Boston,
when he was on the Wynona tour. Unfortunately, in 1995, we seemed to be
either 2 steps ahead of or behind him. We missed him by 2-3 days in
Seattle, Boston and Amsterdam. Which brings me to my request for your
help: on the flight to Amsterdam from Boston, in the wee hours of the
morning, an excellent video was shown. The Neville Brothers were the
featured performers; they were joined by a wide spectrum of musicians
and quasi-musicians, including Bonnie Raitt, Jimmy Buffet, lots of Neville
family, Ed Bradley (from 60 Minutes) and Daniel Lanois. I especially
remember that DL wore a long, red, flowing something....he looked like a
shaman. Does anyone know if this video is comercially available? It was a
wonderful way to arrive into Amsterdam!!

Hi all! I finally found a copy of the Rocky World video, it's great!!!
If there's anyone out there who has not yet seen it I would highly reccommend
forking over the 20 or so bucks to do so! At any rate, while I was the record
store buying the video, I decided to take (I think it was Ant's advice) a look
in the "Benefit" section of the CD rack. and low and behold I found "Land",
the 2 track CD which benefits the efforts of the protesters in Clayquot Sound
B.C. . It's also some great DL artistry, so go out and find that too if you
have'nt already (boy I'm full of praise today!).
Well that's all for now! Take Care everyone!!!
Yours, usually a little behind the times, Andrew Bankley

A few people have asked for my e-mail address for 'supply house'
correspondence. It is... dmiller@io.uwinnipeg.ca
On the subject of DL oddities, one place to try would be Muchmusic...the
Canadian version of MTV. They've broadcast an 'Unplugged' of Daniel
Lanois. It is an hour long and is actually called 'Intimate and
Interactive'(or something along that line) Unfortunately, I don't have
any address for Muchmusic so anyone out there who might happen to know
it, could you please drop me a line...I've only seen the last 10 minutes
of the broadcast.

I guess I kind of flew off the handle a few weeks back with my comment
about being into that 'hybrid stuff'. One could argue DL, Peter Gabriel,
and quite a few other musicians are 'hybrid acts'. I guess when I heard
about Pearl Jam working with Nusrat, I immediately figured it was a
publicity stunt. What irks me is when you do hear about it, the whole
focus is on the 'pop artist' rather than who they are working with.
Enough rambling...

For the most part you're very correct - I've heard it go both ways,
though, surprisingly. I was pleasantly surprised to find a messages in
some of the audio newsgroups that discussed "For The Beauty..." as being
the perfect album for testing audio equipment because of the 'immense sonic
variety.' (yes, I just made that phrase up :)...) And many were curious
about his recording technique, i.e. mikes, effects, etc.

On the other hand, I've heard _plenty_ of complaints about his production,
as I'm sure many of you have - like how everybody says that everything he
touches sounds exactly the same, etc, etc... I dunno - I always thought
that it was the _job_ of a producer to provide some sort of direction for
an album. Besides, it's not like Lanois is that unknown (among the music
industry) that whoever works with him wouldn't know what they are getting
into... Same goes for Eno, who has a similar problem with 'techies' :)

Just some thoughts... - Ant

Did you guys have any actual recordings out? Sounds intriguing - :)

Just so long as they aren't some screaming 'Riot Grrl' band ...
