I was praying for a miracle that maybe Daniel Lanois could come play a
musical festival in Athens July 16-19th. Any guess on who the booking agent
is? Daniel J. Matthews, Jr.

someone asked (#119) about who dylan's guitartist is.  it's definitely
not a son of his.  i can't bring his name to mind, but i do believe
dylan used the same band on his latest album, so you can find out by
checking those credits (or try bobdylan.com).  he's been playing with
dylan for at least a year or two.

i saw the 3 morrison/mitchell/dylan shows in LA, which were really

great.  i've seen dylan so many times that i was a bit bored with him.
van morrison just blew the roof off every night.  his band is kickass -
sooo tight - and his shows were very spontaneous.  he'd call out the
next song just as he was finishing the last, and although there were 3-5
songs that got played every night, the rest of the set was a complete
surprise for every show.  my main purpose in going was to see joni, who
was really good, especially friday night.  brian blade was playing with
her and that guy is just amazing.  he was set up on the side of the
stage up front, so he was in profile to the audience.  that made it
really easy to watch him - an extra treat during the show.  blade's band
is going to be playing here in DC in a couple of weeks, and i'll be sure
to catch him.  someone asked about his album - if i find anything out,
i'll post.

now for some DL content... i've been really busy lately, way behind on
email, so it took me a while to get around to this.  i saw the weiland
show at the 9:30 club.  daniel is just an amazing guitarist.  there
weren't too many dan fans there, at least that i could tell.  this is
not surprising, as he was not listed in the 9:30 club's ad until the day
before the show, so i don't think too many folks knew he'd be there.  he
didn't have the audience's attention for the first couple of songs, but
by the time he finished, he was getting a lot of applause.  having
emmylou drop in to sing bg vox on 'still water' and 'the maker' was a
real treat.  i'm curious if she's showed up at any of the other shows.

although i do like STP, and i like some of the stuff on weiland's

record, i couldn't get into his show at all.  scott's an interesting
performer, but most of the melody seemed to be zapped out of his songs
and it was just too damn loud.  i stuck it out because i wanted to see
every minute of daniel (plus i was with a friend who was there to see
scott), but i had to go out into the hall by the end of the show 'cause
it was such a wall of noise.  i dragged a few friends with me who
enjoyed grant lee buffalo, loved daniel, and left after scott did two
songs.  everyone's comments seemed to be the same: "what a weird show".
what made it weird was the zen guitar master we know and love so well
playing grunge and punk.  it went from the traditional rock of GLB to
the introspective world of daniel lanois to the blownout blownup bravado
of scott weiland (and i didn't see the first two acts).  i think what
everyone found the weirdest is seeing daniel play in that set up.  when
they did STP's 'vaseline', i just had to crack up.  not that daniel
wasn't great at playing the stuff, it was just funny to see him rocking
out with these young punk-grungers.  BTW, when the bass player joined
him on stage to play along with 'the maker', it was pretty obvious that
he either didn't know the song or can't play for shit.  or both.

Well well well, scott weiland finally showed his true colors. anyway I hope
that daniel can get out of this predicament with him. I thought they were
great as a duo thing on MTV. I didn't realy have any confidence in Scott but
just goes to show you, you can't do drugs.

Has anyone really explored the circle of folks who record with DL and
Malcolm Burn? I was going through my CDs, and found a couple more
interesting things:

Charlie Sexton, Michael Fraccaso (?) and Craig Ross all seem to be
recording together. If you haven't checked them out, please do! Also notice
that they all cross-collaborate and appear on each other's albums. Very
cool stuff that fits in with the music we enjoy!

kurt,

i believe the "new" song you were describing is

"you don't miss your water 'till the well runs dry". it is a very old r
& b ballad. i do not know who wrote it, but i first heard it 1966-67 on
an album entitled "otis blue", a classic piece of work by the late otis
redding.

Martin,

I totally agreed with your summation of Dan's set. I thought the drummer was the best part of
Weiland's act. He and Dan came in and out of synch while they were playing in D.C. But when
they were together, they blew the room away! I wouldn't have minded a drum solo, that guy
really has his shit together.

Sorry, but I gotta do this. Random Syringe Weiland joke:
What's the difference between Michael Jordan and Scott Weiland?
Jordan shoots and scores, Weiland scores and shoots.

I've been into Our Boy for about a year now. I find his lyrics achingly haunting; his melodies
are the song that's been in your soul forever but you just haven't been able to express it.
y'know? Dan in person is by turn dramatic, scorching, twisted, fierce, painfully beautiful. That
man is the real thing. Even the blue-haired, 13-something chicky (escorted by he
r father)
sitting next to me, realized it.

I, too, left shortly after Scotty came on. (Somebody should tell that guy that David Bowie has
more pure talent in his little finger than he could ever hope to have.) Nothing could really top
seeing him and Emmy Lou Harris doing Still Water and The Maker. Anybody know what she was
doing in DC? Did she make it to any other shows?

My suggestion--Even if the nearest Lanois show is a two-day drive, you're fighting pneumonia,
your girl/boy friend has just left you, and you've lost your puppy ... DROP EVERYTHING AND SEE
THE BOY PLAY!

The song Kurt refers to ("You Don't Miss Your Water") is an old soul tune
from the Stax era...
He and Emmy did it on the "Wrecking Ball" tour.

I have this song on a tape, it's originally sung by Brian Eno and I
believe appears on the "Married to the Mob" soundtrack, which was a
not-so-great (IMHO) movie by Jonathan Demme. It's kind of a
spacey-western tune in the same kind of way "Ice" on Acadie is a
spacey-doo-wop 50's tune, in my twisted way of comparing things
musically. Very interesting that he performed this, makes me wonder
if he was involved in the original version?

Speaking of Dan's baldness, I suspect that the bandana around the
head (circa Wynona) has been hiding the truth for a long time. Look
at it, however, as though he continues to emulate his great mentor,
the ever-so-bald Eno. Check out the inside cover of Roxy Music's
first album Eno's hair was longer than Lanois'.

5) "New Song?" I had never heard this one before, but it was good. I
> think the title may have been "The Well Runs Dry" or something.
> Basically a love lament. The chorus was along the lines of "you
> don't miss your water 'til your well runs dry". Cool tune.
