Jewel is off.  She chose to work with Patrick Leonard.
Chris Cornell is off. Daniel chose to work on his own material since he would
like to get an album out soon.

Wim Wenders spent two days filming the Willie Nelson album live at his studio,
Teatro, this is going to be released in different commerical and promotional
ways over the life of the project. In addition, Daniel and Emmy will be
joining Willie at the Gavin Summit in Boulder, CO later this month. They will
be doing E-Town and a handful of other performances.  SPecifics forthcoming.

Daniel will be joining Willie on Sept 8th for a Letterman performance.

"Buffalo Hell" was released on a Real World Records (Virgin)  Compilation a
few years back. It has never been released anywhere else.

In Acadie 125, Jim McCabe was asking about the Infinite Guitar.
The specs of and theory behind the Infinite Guitar are known to very few.
We know it somehow recycles the signal from a string and loops it back into
the guitar, yielding infinite sustain. From what I understand, Michael
Brook is not interested in sharing design or construction
information...which is fine with me. Mystery and myth make for easy
pathways to the Muse.

Hi from Poland!

I'm not sure, if You can song called "454"
from the REALWORLD record "Way down below Buffalo Hell" (1993).
This piece is fully writen by Daniel, is sung by him and it's the only song
on the album, he participated in. The song has quite nice melody, very in
Lanois style of composing and it has African flavour (balafon from Burkina
Faso
sounding).
It lasts 4'59 and its words gave a name to all the album.

"Sirens screaming, Yana now hang on to your buckle belt
Immigration man goin' down, down below Buffalo Hell
454, Hemmy ridin' high

454, no you can't hold a man down when he's ready to try, ready to try,
When he's ready to try."

If You knew about the song (You didn't mentioned it on Your page),
sorry for disturbing. If not.... my pleasure.

Greetings!
Thank You for newsletter!

Can't stand waiting for 1st of September....

Lukasz

Here is the first of a series of excerpts from the article
entitled, "Daniel Lanois On Recording" that was published
in the August 1997 (Volume XIX) issue of Canadian Musician:

http://www.canadianmusician.com/

Author: Nick Krewen

"For me, the ambient recordings that took place in the early
'80s in Hamilton were really the backbone of my experimentation.
That was the most exciting time for me, in regards to
experimentation. I didn't have alot going on around me in the
sense of distraction. Nobody knew who I was, and I sat
comfortably in my laboratory spending late nights working
on equipment. That was a real luxury; at that time I met
Brian Eno. There was really a concentrated period of
experimentation from '79 to '84, and I have to say those
were the real driving years for making methodic discoveries.
Now there's an ambient music resurgence, with beats and
whatnot. But I feel that those records were part of the
pioneer days for ambience."

Hey Now,

I think the tune you're calling "Buffalo Hell" is actually "454", Lanois'
contribution to a Real World compilation titled "Way Down Below Buffalo
Hell". Funky and eclectic, not your typical Real World compilation (but
then, what is a typical Real World compilation?)

Also, someone mentioned Michael Brook and his infinite guitar. Can anyone
steer me to more info on Brook? I own all of his releases of which I'm
aware, but am starving for more info on the man and his rig. Thanks.

peace,

hoby

From what Dan has said in interviews, he's using an old Kay Fuzz pedal
(which happens to be orange by the way...) on "Orange Kay".  I don't
believe the Infinite Guitar was part of the rig...it's fuzz induced
sustain.

As for the Infinite Guitar itself, I've never seen any technical details.
I would guess that it's based on the same principle as the Fernandes
Sustainer or the Sustainiac.  Basically, one of the pickups gets replaced
with a "driver" (which acts like a built in E-Bow and keeps the string in
motion) and you can control the strength of the driver with a "drive"
control that replaces one of your tone pots.

Hope this helps some.

Well sounds like Daniel is still pretty busy with country music. Has anybody
heard the new Willie Nelson album or has anybody know about the release date
of this particular album. I'm eager to hear the two together.

Friends,

I am glad to say that I have heard the new Willie Nelson album, and though
it is not as "Lanois" as "Wrecking Ball" that it is a fine album. Emmy's
voice is prominent throughout, and hearing her and Willie singing "The
Maker" is pretty cool.

Production on the album is not as "treated" as past Lanois projects, and I
expected a much more atmospheric sound, but I think that the album (titled
"Teatro") is on par with "Oh Mercy"'s production.

Also, please go out of your way to get Emmylou's new live album "Spyboy"
which was recorded with Buddy Miller on guitar, Daryl Johnson on bass and
Brady Blade on drums. Supercool!

There's a great set of albums recorded by Chris Harford, a musician from NJ.

He just recently returned from recording with Malcolm Burn at Lanois' New
Orleans studio.

Concerning the post about the above song (which is actually titled "454") --
the
album was called Way Down Below Buffalo Hell; and though in actuality was by
'various artists', it was attributed to Jam Nation, which was a conglomeration
of Real World's roster and then some.  Lots of other great tracks on the disc,
most of which escape me at the moment.  I think DL played guitar and maybe
sang
backup on a couple of other tracks as well.  Great heterogeneous mix of world
music, definitely worth checking out.

a little late, i know, but in response to the "buffalo hell" song by
lanois: i found it some years back on a realworld album by that name.

the song by lanois is actually called "454" i think.  there are
different artists on the album, but most all of them are very good. i
had a difficult time finding the cd and finally had to order it, but do
not remember from where.  another little known song might be found on
the last temptation of christ follow up soundtrack called
"conquistador."
good luck with these.
