I'm a Swedish producer & guitarist, who has recently moved to North Carolina to work as a project manager for Volvo. 2 1/2 years ago in Sweden, I was approached by a remarkable singer/songwriter named Robert Sohlberg. He runs a boarding house right by the ocean on a Swedish island where my band had been playing repeatedly. You'd have to see the place to believe it. The music he writes is in a tradition every fan of Lanois would appreciate. He played me several of his songs and they struck a strong nerve in me. So in January of 1996, I moved parts of my studio into the boarding house and my band and I started recording with him. Between takes we usually drank wine, ate, talked, and just spent time together... Typically he showed us song ideas on an acoustic guitar and I immediately got the arrangements down with the band as quickly as possible and recorded loads of tracks. Later, I selected the "workables" and worked with overdubs and sound treatments and finally mixed the result at Bohus Studios in Sweden. I feel that the band contribution and production does his music justice. Their is a lot of love for music and atmosphere going on here. If you like the work of Daniel Lanois, Peter Gabriel, Neil Young, & Robbie Robertson I'm pretty sure you'd enjoy this record. The results still haunt me. The album just grows & grows with the passing of time... and the fact that the recordings are lying on my bookshelf gathering dust, unreleased, really disturbs me. I have no idea what to do with this excellent record. The collective band name is Biggles and the album is named Serious Clown. I would be extremely grateful for any suggestions, help, advice etc. I'll gladly send a cassette copy to anyone who mails a SASE to me. If you like Lanois you won't regret it. I promise you that this is a remarkable album. Please write to me at email it.1068tes@memo.volvo.com, or send your SASE to: Tommy Sahlin 406 Mendenhall Road Jamestown, NC 27282 Thank you for allowing me to write about this album in this forum. The record really deserves it... ---- 98-09-15 17:52 ---- Sent to ------------------------------------- -> lanois@sfbayconcerts.com [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: MAYDELOTT@aol.com Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 22:19:26 EDT Subject: Re: ACADIE Digest, Number 127 Andrew, I have the Brian Blade disc and like it quite a bit. It does not, however, contain the signature Lanois production sound. It is a pretty straightforward treatment of multi-tempo jazz pieces featuring Brian's drumming and percussion. Cheers. Mike. High standard of musicianship playing mainstream or traditional ensemble jazz. DL plays on two tracks, I believe. He jams in conjunction with the others (at times in almost a Pat Matheny or urban cocktail guitar style). The rest of the album is straight jazz, drums and horns and a wonderful spatial sound. There are certainly echos and washes not found in some jazz but there's no deliberate thumb print by DL. From the sleeve photos, he seemed to be positioned as a member of the band. His Production is not a radical departure from the Blue Note Sound, but it's very good. I don't know Lanois' history with Jazz but it's good to experiment with a different music genre. I thought it was only me that he loved, I feel so used and cheap now (!). I've had the experience of accidently meeting him the same way. I was volunteering as an usher afew years back for an Emmylou Harris concert at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine. Before the show they were playing the Neville Bros. Yellow Moon (at the time I had no idea how that connected to Emmylou) and I was doing alittle dance - which I'm inclined to do. This guy suddenly appeared infront of me, which stopped me mid hip swing, and announced that he was Daniel. I was alittle startled and confused trying to figure out who he was and were I might have met him!! I actually had Yellow Moon on cassette, but never had the proper magnifying equipment to read the credits. Anyway, he talked to me for a long time or maybe he mostly listened while I told my stories. I did give him plenty of chances to escape, because I'm cool like that, but he seemed to be happy standing and a staring. Boy - can he STARE, I was getting concerned about the possibility of holes. He was kind of a cross between Pepe La Pew and Dracula (Dracula with THE BEAUTY OF WINONA Ryder in it). I will have to say he was very down to earth and soft spoken (chicks love that), a very likeable person by first impression anyway. His mom must be proud. I remember liking the show alot, especially Daryl Johnson - great voice. I've since aquainted myself with Daniels music - found I actually had alot of stuff he produced anyway. The experience taught me to read the liner notes! I like alot of his own stuff, It will be interesting to hear the new CD, maybe there will be a song about tall girls on it!! With all due respect to Bob, Emmy and Willie, he seems to be playing it safe working with sure bets, tried and true artist. It would be cool to see him work with some band he discovered in the subway or something. As far as the Nevilles - they are hosting a masquerade ball Oct. 31 at the State Theatre - my joy - I've got my tickets and I'm polishing up the tail feathers! Bye Bye Birdeeleg@aol.com P.S. As others have mentioned on this list... WN has not been always to my taste in the past- but I really love the new 'slant' on this recording- I can really hear the acoustics/atmosphere of that old cinema- wonderful... One thing - has anyone listened very carefully to WN version of 'The Maker'- correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds to me as though some of the original guitar/percussion & keyboard tracks from DL's 'Acadie' version of 'The Maker' were used in this latest version...? Pardon me if I've missed the news/discussion- is there any sign of a new solo Daniel Lanois release in the near future? Cheers... Subject: Lanois & Eno studying to produce U2 again Hi everyone; I just read this on a U2 news bulletin I get: >From Rolling Stone: Even Better Than The Real Thing In the name of another record. Figure it'll take at least six months for U2 to count the fifty-million simoleons the group raked when it signed a record deal calling for the release of three "best of" albums. By then, U2 should be ready to get back into the business of making music -- and more money. When that happens, U2 will likely look to the producer tandem that brought the Irish quartet many of its greatest hits during the Eighties and early Nineties. Though nothing's written in stone, last Saturday in Dublin the band took a preliminary meeting with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, the two architects behind 1991's Achtung Baby, 1988's The Joshua Tree and 1984's The Unforgettable Fire, three of the band's biggest commercial successes. The pair also teamed up for U2's experimental Zooropa (1993) and Eno last worked on the equally-enigmatic Passengers:Original Soundtracks 1 (1995), which featured the producer and all members of U2. Last year's commercial disappointment Pop was produced by Flood. According to a source close to Lanois, the producers and U2 will meet again some time next month to discuss possible recording locations and recording times for the project. Right now Lanois is on vacation and Eno is busy producing James' forthcoming album, which should be completed by the end of November. A source close to Eno says production on a new U2 album won't begin until at least March. "We imagine they'll work on it through next year," says the source close to Eno, who added it could take them through the summer to complete the album. BLAIR R. Hello everyone, I just discovered this newsletter but I've been a fan of Daniel since his first solo album ACADIE. The thing that always interests me is the way he plays guitar and afcourse his omnichord. I was able to figure out what chords he plays in The maker, under a stormy sky, jolie Louise, sleeping in the devil's bed , the unbreakable chain and Rocky world. In an interview with daniel in an American guitar magazine I read that he juses the tuning, FADFAD (or something like that, It's been a while you know!) and with that I figured out still water , st Anne's gold and the messenger and a song I once saw him play in the tribute concert for Nelson Mandela. Daniel named the song after him. Is there anyone who knows more about his guitar playing or can somenone give me an adress for some transcriptions of his songs? Further I'm always interested to meet people ( are there any woman?) who like Daniel and I don't know if it's possible but I would like to mail Daniel personally. I think he's got to work a little bit harder before he can be considered for a Felix (the trophy's name). As a producer, he has to try to work with some important artists from the world scene. The Bob Dylans, the U2s and the Peter Gabriels just don't cut it to impress th judges. I believe -in the very unlikely case DL gives a puff of comet gas about the whole mess- that if he is ever to stand a chance alongside such brilliant producing hotshots as the ones who operate up here, he will have to start working with the likes of well established local megastars Mario Pelchat, Ginette Reno or Stef Carse. Never quit Daniel, someday you will be good enough for l'ADISQ. (at least a nomination) ......................................................... I'm not much into spirituality/religion, but it brought back memories of my father's favorite scripture about "Make a joyous noise unto the lord". ( he was an orginist/choir director) Music is about the only thing that can incite that kind of feeling in me, and Daniel's does so more than anyone elses, except for maybe Jerry Garcia's solo work. Tim Banks [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 22 Sep 1998 22:59:35 -0500 From: Jim Javenkoski Subject: Excerpt 3 from "Daniel Lanois on Recording" Greetings, Here is the third of a series of excerpts from the article entitled, "Daniel Lanois On Recording" that was published in the August 1997 (Volume XIX) issue of Canadian Musician: http://www.canadianmusician.com/ Author: Nick Krewen "There's a lot of processing equipment that I've used to make things more interesting. Sometimes, I'll do it while recording, sometimes I'll do it after the fact. Rhythm boxes, beat machines and samplers are more interesting when they're amplified. You put a sample through an 18" speaker, and it's going to pack a certain punch it won't have if you just record it straight into the console. I'd like to promote re-amplification. "I also have this mixing idea that I'm starting to experiment with that I'm very excited about. Traditionally, the way mixing is done is that you take your tracks, and you put 'em back through the console, and you re-brand them. But what that doesn't give you is depth of field. No amount of EQ of even a reverb, creates the same depth of field you get when you mic a bunch of musicians in a room and everybody's standing at a different distance from the microphone. My latest thought is that you take your 24 tracks, or whatever you've got, and you put each track into a speaker. So you take your bass and you pipe it through an 18" speaker, take your hi-hat and you pipe it through a small Bose speaker and on and on, and you adjust your speakers in such a way that you create a sonic environment that you re-mic with your stereo microphone. And you get all your depth of field -- exactly what you're hearing -- at that moment, which what you will essentially get on your tape."
