Subject: Note from the Editor

As covered in the regular press, Dan has definitely been in conversations with U2 regarding their next album.  I have also heard from another source that they have
already been in the studio.

Wim Wenders was called on by Daniel to come in at shoot Live at Teatro for a
longform homevideo/other . Island Records Financed it.  It was shot live at
Teatro and will be a companion piece to the Willie Nelson album, Teatro,
produced by Daniel. It is important to note that the Willie album was cut
live in the studio over 5 days which has not worked its way into the press
(with the exeption of the "Maker" collage rhythm bed from Acadie). The label
has submitted the piece to Sundance and are also using bits of it for video
clips that MTV and VH1 will never play. Not really sure where it will find a
home but I do know if will be a beautiful piece. It was shot over a two day
span and I expect we will all be able to purchase it in some format by early
next year.

As discussed further in this issue, Bill Dillon is a friend of Daniels from Canada.
He played on Acadie. He has worked extensively with Robbie Robertson and also
Natalie Merchant. He plays guitar throughout the new Sinead Lohan CD produced
by Malcom Burn.

Here is a question for you all.  How might you envision involving Daniel with our
group?  Would you like to see him participate in some way?  Be creative.

Your humble editor (particularly based on the Les Paul responses),

			Kenley

and they're manufactured by Gibson. made famous by Jimmie Page, amongst many others.
a mandolin is an 8-stringed instrument, but like a 12-string guitar, is double
stringed, so it's only 4 notes doubled up. it looks like a cross between a
guitar and a violin, and is played plucking or strumming.

i just got the willie nelson album today & it's produced beautifully! it's
not as lanois-imprinted as i expected - his influence is certainly there, but
it's not at textural as say, "wrecking ball". i'd say there's more of a cajun
influence than the peter gabriel sound. it's my first nelson purchase ever -
i'm not a big fan, but i like this record a lot.

Just an additional note...
Les invented the electric guitar, but the Les Paul model is actually a
Gibson guitar made to spec for Les.
I think that credit is to discern who is who on the song...as if we couldn't
tell...
I really hope the Country genre and community will appreciate Danny's work.

For those who don't know, Les Paul is a very famous *Guitar Player*, and
made many lovely records with lotsa overdubs, with his wife Mary Ford
singing the vocals.
Gibson makes the Les Paul guitar, named after Les.
Maybe you're thinking of Leo Fender?.

Hello there,
The Les Paul guitar is/was made by Gibson. Daniel's favorite
appears to be a very early version (1950s) with a gold-top and P90 single coil
pickups (versus later versions primarily with humbuckers). It's a great,
great sounding instrument. I like the fact that he plays it on pretty much
every track on Teatro. Of course, Daniel's sound is very much in the way he
plays (very physical and intense). His choices of guitars and amps reflect
this, as they are very responsive instruments. Hope that helps some...

Regarding the borrowing of the bass, drums, and various guitar tracks from
"The Maker" and " Acadie", to Willie's album, one could be certain that it
would be hard to improve on the original. , abd probably why willie laid his
vocal over the top, with sime additional backing vocals from Emmylou, and
Daniel Lanois. I also am looking foward to another effort from DL, and
Emmylou, as well as a followup to "For the Beauty of Wynona" "Learning How to
Crawl', is one of my favorite DL compositions. Take care.

greetings all,
sorry, i don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but i'm about 90% sure
that the version of "the maker", while very close, is NOT lifted from the
original tracks. to my ears there a numerous, very subtle differences. has

anyone read an interview with dan where he says otherwise?
also i got to spend a few hours with dan while he was on tour with scott
weiland and he seemed pretty enthusiastic about the willie nelson record. (i
personally haven't connected with it yet.) we did get to talk about guitars
and amps (i helped him choose and old tweed deluxe and a mustang...quite a
little thrill) and we talked alittle about kingsway studio ( i mixed a record
there and lived there for a couple of weeks.) it was nothing but pleasant.
he was a perfect gentleman.
peace,
ric hordinski
p.s. does anyone have a copy of the w. 54 th sessions things that they might
bootleg for me? i have the builing the wrecking ball video to trade. i also
need another copy of "rocky world"....

just a note.
did anyone happen to catch "farm aid" on cmt (country music television) last
week? while surfing through my satellite station late saturday evening, i
noticed daniel lanois on stage with willie nelson wearing a sequined cowboy
hat. i had to watch.
the festively-chapeaued mr. lanois played in willie nelson's back-up band for
a set featuring some amazing selections from nelson's new album. despite a
quality performance, it appeared that the audience just wasn't connecting to
the new material, in fact, there was little response to the performance.
after a what seemed to be an abbreviated version of "the maker," willie, dan
and co. left the stage. john mellancamp was introduced and the audience
perked right up. go figure.

And Kenley answers:

> Kenley]
But that's not quite right...Les Paul (born Lester Pohlfus, if memory
serves) is a musician, who also happens to be an inventor, pioneering
the electric guitar and many recording technologies including multi-track
recording. He's still alive and plays weekly in NYC...
_A_ Les Paul is a model of Gibson guitar--there have actually been many,
many models that were called Les Pauls (Les Paul Standard, Les Paul
Artist, Les Paul Recording, etc.). Les Paul the man didn't actually
entirely design the Les Paul guitar, but contributed some ideas and lent
his name to the model in the early '50s. He is not a guitar maker in
the sense that he's never manufactured guitars for others to use--he
has certainly built or modfied a few for his own use.
If the one Daniel played on Teatro is the same one he's been using
lately (W. 54th, etc.) it appears to be one of the early ones, '52-'54,
distinguished by the gold metal flake paint job (which is why these are
known as "goldtops") and single coil pickups. It could of course be a

later reissue of this model, but for some reason I suspect Daniel likes
the older vintages better...
> And what exactly is a mandolin; I suppose it's some kind of guitar,
No, a mandolin is a mandolin. It's a tiny instrument, compared to a
guitar and has 8 strings strung in 4 pairs tuned G,D,A,E low to high.
If you've heard REM's "Losing My Religion" you've heard one--it's the
featured instrument.

Hi!
Mark Howard is a friend and collaborator of Daniel's for many years. He is another Canadian who did his own production and engineering work. He is a fine musician, engineer and producer in his own right; definitely influenced by the Lanois style.
If you check out the ACADIE album, you will find Mark playing on several tracks. He was one of the guys working with Daniel at the Kingsway studio in New Orleans, and he toured with Daniel when they went on the road after ACADIE.
The earliest Lanois connection I can find is that he worked with Crash Vegas. A member of this band was Jocelyn Lanois, Daniel's sister. In addition to Mark's work with Daniel, Crash Vegas, the Neville Bros and Tragically Hip, he has recently produced an album by Sinead Lohan which is getting some positive attention.
Thanks Kenley for the great newsletter!

WHOOPS!
I was mixing up Malcom Burn with Mark Howard.
I do know Mark, too, though.
I met him down at Kingsway in New Orleans. He told me he had known Daniel for a while.
Mark had been a roadie for bands for many years, but injured his back. He could no longer do the physically demanding work of a roadie. He got together with Daniel, and came with him to NO from Canada.
At the time I met Mark, he was managing the Kingsway studio; paying the bills, running the house; taking care of the day to day details. At that time, he 'helped out' with recording, but was hoping to learn more.
With Daniel as a teacher; he couldn't lose!
Sorry for the mixup! I have been on the road for the past two weeks and my brains are a bit addled!
THANKS!
Kate

Hi everyone,
just got the new letter......
Bill Dillon did many records with own bands or as a guest or producer, some of
them are:
The Neville brothers:Brother´s keeper (one song, the same as D.L: did!)
Robbie Robertson:several albums (Music for native..../Robbie
Robertson/Storyville) (several songs, on the 1987 album, U2, Peter Gabriel and
D.L. worked on)
Chris Whitley:Living with the law (several songs). My qQuestion to all the
acadie users:Who got the second Chris Whitley record, how is it like?
Sarah McLachlan:Solance (several songs with the whole D.L: Band except himself)
The Boomers:three records (this is Bill Dillons Band! It sounds good, even if it
has a more commercial aspect in it)
Eddie Brickell:Picture Perfect morning (several songs, it is produced by Paul
Simon)
Also he played the two D.L. Studio albums, and I think he is on the Daniel
Lanois live Bootleg "Cool water" witch is recorded live at Toronto/Canada in
April 1993, without Drums, only guitars and vocals.
I also saw Bill Dillon playing live on t.v. with Nathalie Merchant unplugged and
with the Boomers.... Are there any tourdates for Nathalie Merchant?
Does anyone know more Bill Dillon records, please write them down.
Does anyone know, if D.L: will work with Peter Gabriel on the next Gabriel
record, witch might comes in spring 1999?
Well, some qQuestions, some answers....
Bye, Klaus

This is in response to Loet Birker's questions regarding mandolin and
Les Paul. Les Paul is a guitarist who is credited with numerous
inovations in the field of music. Most notably he is the inventor of
the electric guitar, which he dubbed "the log" for his prototype was
little more than that. The Gibson Guitar Co. eventually began working
with Les on what was to become his signiature line of guitars. These
guitars found fame in the hands of the likes of Jimmy Page, Santana,
and Pete Townshend among others. The last resurgence in their popularity
came with the explosion of Guns 'n Roses. Slash and Izzy were seldom
seen with any guitar other than a Les Paul. It is a guitar that is
often hailed as having the ultimate electric guitar tone.
An often overlooked contribution to music that Les Paul made was the
advent of multitrack recording. This was done by staggering two head
stacks side by side on an Ampex tape machine and with one slightly
higher than the other so that the print area of each head stack on the
tape fit between that of the other. This has expanded since to the
present day where 24-track 2-inch tape machines are the norm. Thanks to
Les Paul people like Daniel Lanois have an arena in which they can
express their talents.
The mandolin is an 8stinged instrument that has two strings per musical
note. It is the equivalent of being the offspring of a violin and a 12
string guitar. It is most often sees in bluegrass music. However it is

seen from tim to time in rock music. Steve Winwood, R.E.M. , Phish, and
Daniel Lanois are among those who bring it out to embellish their music
in the studio. An excellent example for you would be to find an album
with David Grisman. He is an excellent mandolin player who has a very
eclectic taste.
Enjoy,

Hi acadiers,
my second thing for today, I have to do it....
I saw D.L. in 1993 in Cologne live and he played his old Fender Stratocaster and
a Fender Telecaster, also two Vox AC30 amplifiers and lots of effects, they
where lying on the floor around him, (does anyone know, which effects he
usually plays?) also he had two monitors to get the feedback with his guitar.
On an album called "Night to night" by Geoffrey Oryema (Real World) D.L. plays
guitar on a song, written by himself (!). The song is called "LPJ Christine",
the liner notes says the following words:"...And anyway, was she really called
Christine-the one for whom guitars like herself used to dissolve into infinity?"
I think the songtitle means a Les Paul Junior guitar, which D.L. often plays in
videos or maybe live or in studios.

Can anyone point me in the direction of more in-depth DL resources? I'm
putting together an article and have run aground. There's a
proto-version at toolbox.net/communique but I'm rewriting the whole
thing - trying to put a larger context on his vision i.e. spiritual
sensibilities in a post-modern age; tension and contrast in his
aesthetic, etc. Pedantic cultural critical stuff a la Greil Marcus.
Suggestions, comments, anyone?

Thanks everybody for answering my 'Les Paul' question; I learnt a lot from it! There's another thing that keeps interesting me. On the Natalie Merchant album Ophelia (on which DL plays one of his best solo's on a track called 'Thick as Thieves'), there's a song called Frozen Charlotte. A guy called Don Peris plays a very interesting piece of guitar on it; he seems to tune his guitar just like DL and plays in a very simular way. Quite interesting, considering that Daniel plays on another track. Who is this guy? Is he somehow connected to DL? On which other albums does he play?
Something else. I've been reading the newsletter for over a year now and I've been wondering why Kenley started it. It may have been said earlier, but maybe Kenley can tell something about himself and explain his fascination with DL's music.
