"Has Peter gone mad?", This must be a real royalty generator, Bowie is a master at this sort of stuff - he sticks a song on some obscure video tape and then get thousands in royalties from the video rentals, etc.... As for Peter Gabriel, I'd guess that there are varying degrees of this sort of "fan dissappointment". Especially from the long-term Peter Gabriel Fan. It seems Gabriel does not believe the progressive rock fan is part of his audience anymore? Now, he seems more "hit oriented" (and anyone can understand the benefits of some self promotion.) But the larger picture is: where's he going? My current position towards his music is skeptical. He's capable of creating such forceful characters and images, maybe this new thing "Up" will be more of a departure? As for Lanois, I was a bit concerned about him possibly teaming up with Jewel ( if that was true). I rather like the idea of keeping this place focused more on the work itself than the artist who created it. He would be a filter into his music that I just don't need (I think), and I can't say why, exactly. His work speaks for itself. And yet there is naked hypocrisy in that statement, because I tend to consume information on Lanois where I find it. The recording/engineering crowd have a point about wanting to talk tech with Daniel. Not a bad idea at all. Beyond that, I think Daniel should be putting some thought to applying his creativity to the online medium, as an extension of his studio, as a real-time archive of sounds that can be shared and so on....as...I don't know what. If Brian Eno can write the ambient keyboard ditty to launch Windows 95 on startup, I wonder what Daniel could do in bringing his music and production mind to an online project. Like scoring some kind of "experience" online. Daniel has scored films, but another frontier for "manipulating" sound and making music will inevitably be "virtual space." Any ideas? Larry G. Willie has more records than most people own. Recording an album in five days is cool to me because it caught Willie and Dan that week... next week they might do something completely unrelated. Personally I like that. I would hate to have one recording define my creativity for all posterity... The job of a producer is to illicit the best performance possible from an artist and "his" ensemble. Teatro is one of the best things Willie has done since "the Red-Headed Stranger" (1974). Those of you who don't enjoy Willies work from the past are probably missing a good portion of Lanois' appeal. They are both "folk" artists, taking traditional melodies and narratives and putting a fresh spin on them. Those of you who expect every Lanois production to sound like a Lanois solo record don't understand the role he plays as producer. Point in fact, in recording circles Lanois is somewhat criticized for being too stylized and pushing artists in to his sound as opposed to discovering their own. Frankly, I love his sound so much it's not an issue for me, but to not hear the overt presence of Lanois on "Teatro" is simply myopic and ignorant. No Willie Nelson record sounds anything close to this and Willie has released over 100 albums! The only artists to truly come out as their own under Lanois tutelage are; Gabriel, U2, and the Neville Bros. Lanois and Willie have done something truly unique. They made a record the way you're supposed to... live, now, and fresh. If you don't like Willie... fine. Denigrating a true "rock-n roll" record like Teatro is, however, uneducated and snobbish. If any of you have recorded music you know what I'm talking about! This is true Lanois and true Willie; of the moment and passionate. ================== Jace Everett Nameless Productions jace@fastlane.net ================== [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: "cam mackellar" cam_mackellar@hotmail.com Subject: new u2 album Date: Mon, 02 Nov 1998 03:57:26 PST just a quick note: U2's The Edge confirmed in an interview with the American College Radio Journal, that Lanios and Eno will be producing the bands next album. There's a song called "Psalm" on her CD titled "Loose" that sounds exactly like a Lanois production. If anyone has that CD give it a listen and let me know what you think. I believe a Williams-Lanois team would make an amazing collection of recordings. For those of you who don't know who she is....she's from Georgia (I think) and has an eclectic mix of folk/rock/blues sound about her. If you can get past her slightly strange high-pitched voice she's well worth checking out - especially live. I'd say her best are "Loose" and "Musings of a Creek-Dipper". I really hope that Lanois will produce some of her work because I think the match would be excellent. -Sue [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: TIMOTHY A EDWARDS tae@library.ucla.edu Subject: Artists selling out or reaching out? Well, he hasn't done anything with Elton or Celine. I've yet to hear it, but you say the lyrics have a good message- I think it's admirable to include children in your audience (and wise since many parents of young kids probably grew up as PG fans). Personally, if my kids want a soundtrack blaring in the house, I'd rather hear PG than Elton or Celine! Additionally, my kids are a bit young for the Last Temptation soundtrack! By the way, what were you doing listening to a station that plays "geriatric music for the homogenized populace" anyway (just kidding)? > My concern is the "selling out" process that all too often seeps into > these incredible artists' souls. I wrote to the company with the publishing rights three years ago to find out more info about the song but they haven't responded yet. I think I get the message. But I would be very interested to know whether anyone has come across a recording of it. I thought it was such a strong song, I was surprised it wasn't included on Wynona, although perhaps it will be on the next album. With regard to Malcolm Burn, I have heard some of his production efforts like Lisa Germano's "Geek Girl" (not great) and Midnight Oil's "Breathe" (strongly recommended) and was wondering whether his production style on Sinead Lohan's latest album is sufficiently Lanois-esque to merit a listen. Are there any other Lanois-esque albums that Burn has produced recently. Burn put out an album, "After Dinner Mints" with his own group, Pregnant, but I believe it was a Canada-only release. (1) In response to the post concerning DL and Farm Aid, it reminds me of a story that Steve Earle likes to tell. Steve Earle and the Dukes played at the '96? 97? Lollopoloza as a mystery guest and they got totally bombarded by plastic water bottles. Of course, Earle snaps back at the audience and says "Is that all you got to throw? We usually get hit by beer bottles!" The Lollopoloza crowd couldn't understand Earle's music but supposedly a few started to sway a bit towards the end. Moral of the story: Wrong audience, lack of appreciation. (Or, a sense of humor will get you through anything!) (2) Peter Gabriel and Babe. I haven't heard the song yet but all have been forewarned, DL has appeared in Entertainment Weekly several times this year, by mentions, or even with a picture! (gasp!) He's being written about with much respect but hey, if Entertainment Weekly is about pop culture, how much longer will our guy become as popular as Ally McBeal? Is it really Peter Gabriel's fault that he's popular? And again, I haven't heard the song yet, but at least it's a song for Babe! I love Babe. Not because he's popular but because he's cool! So my point is, it could have been worse than "Babe"--he could have used a song for a telephone company or something. ;-) (3) So my neighborhood Pennylane guy tells me that there's supposedly a D.L. something piece out there that's sung in all French or Quebecois. I said to the guy, "oh, you mean Acadie," and he says "Nooooooooooo, it's for a soundtrack or something." Since I don't know the guy and a customer came and interrupted our conversation, I was too chicken to ask him about making me a tape. Has anyone heard of this before? If so, perhaps you may have a clue about what Greg Dulli, the WHIGS' vocalist is on about, according to one of the band's fans. Below is an excerpt from the end of the band biography on this page: http://www.theafghanwhigs.com/bio.html "...New Orleans was a good idea for the Whigs. It got them away together in a new place and helped them focus on the task at hand - making great music together. [Whigs' bassist] Curley said that being in The Big Easy eliminated a lot of distractions for the band but, he adds, "you have a lot of new distractions to worry about down there." Indeed, they did get a little nuts down south. The combination of living in the French Quarter, hanging out and jamming with some great musicians, and the city's legendary reputation and vibe made it the perfect locale to get it together and create. The Whigs' hard-earned penchant for landing on their feet after troubled times returned. They definitely had the gris-gris, which is always a good thing to have when you're fixin' to welcome some insanity into the proceedings on the bayou. Indeed, it got so crazy that even [Whigs' guitarist] Rick McCollum (who is the nicest and most mild-mannered guy I know) got thrown in the 'Nawlins pokey on the last night of Mardi Gras. Curley dutifully bailed him out. Dulli was M.I.A. for a few days near the end of the sessions. He mysteriously returned with a strange instrumental called "The Vampire Lanois" which puts a rap on things (in an economical 41:32, I might add). I asked Greg what this title meant, and he was very hesitant to discuss this. I did manage to get out of him that the song's inspiration was 3000 years old and slept in a casket covered by dirt from his homeland of Acadie. I wanted to know more, but Greg stopped me, fearing certain preternatural events that could take place if he continued to discuss it. If this sounds like it was written by a fan, o.k. then, because it was. Play this motherfucker and tell everyone you know about it. Dan Reed Louisville, KY., USA Summer 1998" The new WHIGS release, *1965* was recorded in N'Orleans earlier this year. During his stay in The Big Easy, perhaps Dulli heard many sing the praises of Lanois and he felt compelled to offer his own sardonic statement about our man. The Dracula metaphor is pretty funny, methinks. ;) Jim Javenkoski pastaman@uiuc.edu [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: "Genevieve Guay" geneguay@hotmail.com Subject: Daniel & discussion group Date: Wed, 04 Nov 1998 09:01:34 PST Hello! Of course, I would love to see this happen, but when is The Man going to get around to another solo album? As much as I love U2, I almost wish Dan would disconnect his phone to ward off all these offers and finish his allegedly in-progress album. Also, I caught Dan and Willie on FarmAid last month.
