Hi Kenley,
I am a newcomer to your site and group. I've been getting all the e-mails
which have been rather interesting. I really do love Daniel Lanois' work
(whether solor or with other artists).
I am looking for an interview piece that was aired on CNN a month ago. My
girlfriend just taped 5 minutes of it and I'm dying to see the whole thing.
Does anyone have it taped? How could I get a hold of it?
Thanks in adavance,
Benita

Dear Kenley,
Happy New Year to all and best wishes.
I have recommended Daniel to produce a soundtrack to Werner Herzog- who
is a match for his taste as a Director. I hope something comes of it, as
only great beauty must of itself be. Chlorine

Hi all,
Kenley, great to see you back again... we missed you! I just wanted to
say that the new REM cd hasn't left my car CD player since the first day
I bought it. And that's saying something, cuz I pretty much live in my
car. This is a very sensual, very eclectic, very thoughtful album. It's
as good or better than Automatic for the People, which I think is the
band at their best. I heard that the band members all switched around
their instruments and played instruments they don't usually play. They
use the band's "antique" collection of Moog synthesizers on many of the
tracks, and so the notes aren't quite firm, they have this reed-like
quality which is really neat. Plus, you can hear the lyrics. Give me
another REM album where you can hear all the lyrics to all the songs...
it ain't gonna happen. Anybody who thinks REM has sold out is insane, or
just hasn't really given the album a good listen. Only a few of these
tracks are going to get any airplay, which is too bad, but that's just
how it goes.
P.S. Count me in for the private Lanois show, even at $200 a ticket.
Only can it be on the east coast? I'd like to offer my and my husband's
home for the show...

Hey all...
According to a source close to DL whom I'm in immediate contact
with, DL has already recorded his third solo album. He hasn't mixed
it yet though. It was actually recorded about a year ago but other
commitments and interesting projects have surfaced in the meantime.
I bring this up because of the bleak message I read in the last
digest. Don't give up hope. DL will never quit writing. Once it's
in your blood, you can't ever diffuse it. DL's got it and he'll be
back. Don't forget, he and Mark Howard were busy earlier last year
with building Teatro (which also fits the earlier daydream description
of a church with candles and Indian rugs...it's an abandoned movie
theatre but the candles and rugs are present). Dig it.
- T.

Subject: Dan creating chaos

Hi Kenley,
Recently I was in the most hit or miss random process of going through a
big pile of 80's music magazines at a friend. Gear reviews, artists, famous
albums and various analysis and opinions on the trends back then. Something
like a compact lecture on the microchip revolution, midi, 80's pop music,
design and production, and where it all thought it was heading towards. I
would recommend it, but beware of a slight sense of panic from time to
time, as it's heartbreaking to comprehend that it happened almost
yesterday.
Anyway, in the Music Technology issue of October 1987, there's an interview
with Dan entitled "Creating Chaos"; "Contriving curious recording
environments and engineering strange treatments of sound are techniques
that have made Daniel Lanois' productions of U2, Peter Gabriel and Brian
Eno best sellers" Dan talks about music - producing it, playing it, and
relating to the parts and the sum of it, in short. There's a biography
twist to it as well, which I think 'just found out about him' fans would
appreciate. Overall it's an interesting couple of minutes, a well written
and informative text.
(For example, I hoped to find the final answer to what part or sound the
'processed sax' mentioned in the production credits on PG's song "Mercy
Street" corresponds to, but beatboxes, hardhats and a Mitsubishi machine's
idea of bass had apparently greater influence on the production.)
I imagine you know more than me about publishing stuff like this on the
web. I read the copyright notes in the editorial section, which bans all
reproduction of any kind worldwide, but ... well? 1987? I could type it in
and mail it to you if there are'nt too many lethal jaws waiting for dinner
out there.

best regards,
/Per Klintberg

Subject: Some observations

Hello, glad the list is operable again. It's has been sort of a
musically quiet winter. I've been getting through the gloomy grey
days with things like Sinead Lohan's "No Mermaid"; really a beautiful
recording on her's and Malcom Burns part.
Also I was surprised to see Lisa Germano's credits all throughout,
Sheryl Crow's "Globe Session" which turned out to be disappointing.
Her lead guitar player has perfected every Keith Richard's lick
in-the-book. It gets a little ho-hum about halfway through.
Has Willie Nelson been nominated for a Grammy? Has Lucinda Williams
likewise been nominated (in the same category?). If so, tough call on
the alt-country category.
For you Ambient types, I highly recommend Steve Roach and Roger
King's "Dust to Dust"(Projekt Records,Chicago) very much in the same
County Ambient vein as "Apollo".
Lastly, what is the scoop on Mssr. Lanois? I hear rumors that he's
working with Brian Eno again trying to resuscitate U2. I wish them
the best if this is true.
Anyway, just thought I'd toss in some comments to stimulate some
discussion.
Best Regards,
Brett Johnson

Subject: I want my Lanois CD now!

Just thought I'd throw out a little rant. When the hell is DL gonna have a new CD of
his own songs out? And I don't mean a soundtrack. I'm an admirer of his
production work, but it's his work as an artist (I know, his production is the work
of an artist, as well) and performer that in my eyes lifts him up to the top of the
pack. The few times I've seen Daniel live have been the finest and most intense
performances I've ever witnessed. Particularily the first tour with the film
projections on the big white ball and the quad sound. It felt like seeing a low
tech-Acadian Hendrix playing folk songs from heaven. Amazing stuff. Even "Cool
Water", although it doesn't come close to the power that he had with Daryl and Brian
in concert, is a moving experience. I do sort of consider Emmylou's CD to be a DL
record since his imprint (and songs) are felt so strongly on it, but I need him
singing them, damn it. How long has it been since "Winona" came out - too long!
And I'm sick of other people doing mediocre covers of "The Maker" (no offence
Willy). Fortunately, when I recently listened to "Acadie" I was able to listen to it and
not think of those other versions. So, Daniel, I know you'll do what ever you want
to do, in your own time, but realise what you have to offer with you own voice.
And now the rant has ended. (Finally)

Not often sadness of a woman is so beautiful, like this...
"Ophelia" by Natalie Merchant is absolutely my personal album of the year.
I bought it only because of Lanois playing guitar on one track...
That's the pretty example, how one fascination creates another one...
Cheers!
