I understand Emmylou Harris is touring the midwest and west with The
Innocence Mission opening for her. Is Daniel still part of this tour?

[I plan on seeing her here in San Francisco on April 9.  Daniel is not in this band;
I forget the new guitarist name. Darrly Johnson is on bass and Brady Blade is on
drums (Brian's brother). They are touring US -> Australia -> Europe and then
all three again. -- Kenley]

Hello everybody!

I have been a recipient of the ACADIE-newsletter since the last four weeks,
and I'm very grateful for the medium. As a new member of your list I just
want to introduce myself and tell you about my "affinity" to Daniel Lanois.

I have admired him ever since I discovered he was the producer of Peter
Gabriel's "So". When he released "Acadie" about six-seven years ago, a new
musical cosmos opened up to my then quite bored pair of ears. The album is
still a frequent guest in my CD-player, and so are most of the other ones
featuring Daniel as a musician or/and producer. I think that the liaison
between Daniel and Emmylou is a climax in the history of popular music.
Their concert (I saw them in Stockholm in Nov.) was an unforgettable event.
I am also a member of the WWW-Neil Young-Hyperrust mailing list. So,
consequently, the next milestone I'm eagerly waiting for is a fruitful
studio and stage collaboration between Daniel and Neil - which shouldn't be
an impossible thing to imagine, should it? I've always wondered what
"Harvest Moon" would sound like if Daniel'd had his hands on the buttons.
On the other hand - what would there be left worth waiting for, if...
I'm happy and grateful for any info I can get from this list. Probably I
won't be able to contribute anything myself, because all I know about
Daniel is second-hand news, and I neither buy nor sell any DL-rarities. But
knowing that there are people out there sharing my feelings about Daniel's
music is fun enough.
Greetings from Stockholm/Sweden, Uli.

Yeap I have it! It is not with me as I am away from home at the present time.
It was/is on sale in the UK I think under the WB label.
It is called the " Neville's Live" filmed in N'Orleans... I think it may
be Tipitinas.Recorded after the " Yellow moon" release. It features all the
names you mentioned plus Ivan Neville (son of Aaron who has appeared with
DL on some of his collaborative works). I thought DL was wearing an
American Indian cape but I'm no expert.

The Brits are very into the DL scene and he has a bigger main stream
following there then he appears to have in N. America.
Isn't it amazing how the Brits are so progressive musically despite
(or maybe because) their stiff traditional codes.
Can anyone tell me what the scene is like in Canadian cities especially
in Montreal and Hamilton. I'm sick to death of getting the " who????"
response when I mention his name in ' reputable ' music shops here in N.
America. Maybe its different on the E. Coast.

Bye for now.

Suren

I just want to say, that Lanois may be one of the mosst talentedsinger
and songwriter that North America has ever produced. I'm not a U-2 fan or
even a Peter Gabriel fan. I first saw him on Michelob Night Music and was
blown away by his talent. I hope he keeps his solo career going. I do
have to admit that I love "Wrecking Ball" it's like a Lanois solo album
with Emmlou Harriss as lead singer. I'ts incredable.

Exactly! Reading the discussion on the U2 list in the past few months it
seems that many people thought that Lanois had "too much" control, but
apparently nobody ever thought that if that were true he (and Eno) wouldn't
have produced a majority of their recording since '84...

Mitchell Froom is another Canadian producer who has a definite 'sound' -
he produced Suzanne Vega's "99.9" album and Los Lobos' "Kiko" as well as a
side project with them (Latin Playboys) - (BTW, these are all excellent
albums - I'd highly recommend them) - here's the Lanois connection, sort
of. Yet another Canadian artist, Ron Sexsmith's recent album was produced
by Froom, but one song is on it twice - the second version was 'remixed'
by Lanois. I've only listened to it on the listening booth at Tower, but
it's interesting how Froom's production contrasts so much with Lanois'
even though they both have very distinct styles.

Does anyone know more about Mitchell Froom? He's fast becoming a name I
keep an eye out for...

So I went out and at long last bought a copy of the "Cool Water" live CD -
I must say that it is excellent, but not really what I expected for some
reason. I guess it just sounds more 'rushed' that what I imagined Lanois
live to be - maybe it was just the setting or particular performance but
all of the songs seemed very clipped and not at all like his live stuff on
the Rocky World video.

And is it just me, or does he seem slightly 'miffed' that Brian is not
'looking at him _all_ the time'..? :) Yes, I know he means it for cueing
purposes...

Nonetheless it is great and would recommend it. Now just try to find it! :)

I've never really been into the whole bootleg scene, but are there any
other official (or 'unofficial') live recordings out there? I read on the
Emmylou Harris site about Lanois doing a cover of U2's 'Love is Blindness'
and would really love to hear that - anyone?

I too recently got this CD and am pleased to add it to my collection. It is
very strange in that there does not appear to be any drums or bass (despite
the comment to Brian). Anybody else notice this? Also, the linear notes are
in German (I'll post them at some point) and there is no mention of his label.
I'm not certain if this is a legitimate release despite being able to purchase it
through legitimate channels. Any comments?

Kenley
