Hi!
Just have to comment on that:
<<--German (I think; looks German to me) performer Juliane Wedring's album
or single MAENNER KOMMEN UND GEH'N was produced by dl. >>
Yes, Juliane Werding is a german performer, but please don't tell me that
she has been produced by Dan... I mean she *really* sucks... I can't believe
it.... "Ein bischen Frieden ein bischen Freude..." NEIIINN!!!! How
DL-obsessed you may are, but please promise me one thing, never check out
any of her recordings!! This is meant as a serious warning!! ;o)
Cheers (anyway), Pablo
P.S. Have you already heard the snipped of U2's "Ground beneath her feet"?
Listen to the chord progression and try to sing the verse of "The Messenger"
to it...

The video you're looking for is entitled: TELL IT LIKE IT IS. In addition
to all the artists you mentioned, it also features Bonnie Raitt, John Hiatt,
Jimmy Buffet, Herbie Hancock, and a few others. It was recorded live at the
Storyville Jazz Hall in Nawlins. It's an HBO Video, distributed by A@VISION
Entertainment. We purchased it at Towers Records here in Boston in 1996,
after viewing it in the early morning hours as our plane descended into
Amsterdam. It was encouraging to have a major airline feature a quality
musical performance rather than the usual "films in flight" offerings. Maybe
there's hope??!!! It's really a wonderful video - I hope you are able to
add it to your collection.

This is for Brock and anyone else who is interested in the Neville Brothers
concert. It was called "The Neville Brothers & Friends Tell It Like It Is".
The video features Bonnie Raitt, Gregg Allman, John Hiatt, Dennis Quaid
and yes Daniel Lanois in his poncho. The video was distrubuted by HBO. I
bought it here in Vancouver, Canada.
Cheers, Carol

Commenting on Harry Siegels very useful info..
I am pretty sure DL had no involvement with Zooropa. In the book "U2 at
the End of the World" by Bill Flanagan (great book BTW) I get the
impression that U2 were pretty cheesed off with DL by the end of the
Achtung Baby recordings. So the next album was done with Eno and Flood.
But if I remember correctly Numb has a credit for Lanois along the lines
of he produced the original mix (presumably that track was a holdover from
the Achtung Baby sessions).
Looking forward to the new U2 album..
Andy
P.S. Anyone have any idea what's holding up the new Peter Gabriel album?
As far as I know DL has had no input and I can't help wondering if PG is
suddenly realising that the record lacks that "magic" DL touch.. just a
guess though..

I basically agree with you, but indeed "Numb" (third track in "Zooropa") is
said to be "Originally recorded with Daniel Lanois" in the song credits.
Cheers,
Francisco.

Their new CD is due out soon. The three remaining band members didn't work
with Daniel on this one. (In what was reported to be a mutual decision,
keyboardist Vivian Trimble left the band before this one was recorded .) I
read that their record company apparently said that they thought "Fever In
Fever Out" was more of a Daniel Lanois album, instead of a Luscious album.
Any Acadian that doesn't have this disc is really missing out.

Hello fellow "Lanois-iacs",
I tried to use the archive but couldn't find what I was looking for.
Does anyone know what kind of pickups/effects DL uses to get his
signature sound? I come pretty close with my 490R and 498T Gibsons and
regulating the gain on the Marshall, even using the Zoom505 sometimes,
but still can't get the same cutting timbre.
Thank You

Hi,
I'm responding to Signoremg's earlier post about Spanish Johnny's Opera, a
San Francisco band I manage. Actually, I've already written him back, but I
wanted to address him as well as a couple of other folks who have been nice
enough to email me and request information about the band. SJO would appeal
to Lanois fans, I'm sure. Strong songs, interesting instrumentation (cello,
viola, guitars, different organ sounds, mellotron, drums, vocals), good
singing.
The band is just putting finishing touches on a debut 8-song EP, recorded
with former member of American Music Club and recent David Byrne/REM
collaborator Bruce Kaphan (Bruce alone would be a point of interest for many
Lanois/Eno fans - he is a pedal steel player and producer whose command of
digital processing and midi technology is rivaled by Lanois, Edge and few
others. His playing with American Music Club and on David Byrne's 97/98 tour
was a marvel. He is currently concentrating on production and soundtrack
composition). I would like to invite any member of this list to be among the
first several hundred people to hear Spanish Johnny's Opera around the
country. If you live in the US, we will send you the DEBUT SPANISH JOHNNY'S
OPERA CD FOR FREE. Because I value the potential for this community of high
quality music fans to spread the word about am exciting new act, I will
personally foot the bill (including shipping costs!) for the first 200 people
who contact me via email. If you're from outside of the US, I probably can't
afford to do the same, but email me, and we'll work something out.
Spanish Johnny's Opera is a great band, artsy, adventuresome and affecting.
If you dig great songs, unique and powerful singing, great string
arrangements, and production with a sense of place (it may sound obscure, but
it's half the reason you love those Lanois and U2 albums, and the natural
reverb in the building on the abandoned naval shipyard where this was
recorded has to be heard to be believed), you will love this band!! Please
contact me, regarding this matter and scheduling of upcoming Bay Area shows
(The Hotel Utah is July is about all I know right now), at nhrolbin@aol.com
Thanks,
NHR

Subject: a bit more DL info...

Hi there
I just read Harry Siegel's very informative post on DL's wide-ranging body
of work.
Perhaps everyone knows this, but DL also had a track on a disc called Plus
From Us, which came out on Peter Gabriel's label and featured a song each
from a number of people who were on the US disc.
DL also has a couple of songs on Music For Films II (or maybe it was III).
Finally, Harry: I got lots of good stuff from your post, but I would have
one small correction ( not a criticism...you obviously know your stuff).
I believe you got your bassist Daryl Johnson mixed up with the other
bassist Daryl Jones, who has been working with the Stones for the past 5-6
years. He also played with Sting, Miles Davis, many others. But he's not
the same similarly-named guy who works with DL so often.
Maybe this is all old news.

Seeya,
Matt
