Yet another Canadian artist, Ron Sexsmith's recent album was produced >by Froom, but one song is on it twice - the second version was 'remixed' >by Lanois. I've only listened to it on the listening booth at Tower, but >it's interesting how Froom's production contrasts so much with Lanois' >even though they both have very distinct styles. Mitchell Froom has actually been around for quite some time. I know him primarily as a producer. The Latin Playboys is really a great, overlooked record, sonically quite interesting, and done on a cassette 4-track, BTW -- but don't let that scare you off -- it's mixed in a big studio, and besides, it's really well done. Froom has also done Crowded House's first CD, you know, the one with "Don't Dream It's Over" and "Something So Strong" and all that. I think he did that other Crowded House CD with the Uillean (sp?) pipes and all that! Possibly the Neil Finn solo CD as well. I know he's produced a bunch of stuff, but that's all I can think of right now. And to respond to another post -- I think that Lanois/Young together would be a very interesting combination! We could in fact have this complete Canadian collaboration, and have Lanois produce Rush as well (just kidding...)! Just a brief note about Cool Waters. It was originally released off of a lable called ITM. I think they are in Nashville, but I am not sure about the details. Also, in response to Suren, here on the east coast he is not that broadly known, but it is interesting that those people that I have run into that know of him all assume he is pretty well known. yours deeply, ilmi [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Mon, 18 Mar 1996 10:52:48 -0800 (PST) From: Suren Thuraisingham Subject: Re: Touring with Emmylou? > [I plan on seeing her here in San Francisco on April 9. Suren, you're sick to death of getting that "who???" response when you mention DL's name? Well, it's even worse here in Montreal. There's a popular singer named Daniel Lavoie living here. So, imagine, it's 8 in the morning, I just arrive at workplace and somebody jump in my face saying: «Were you at Berri metro station yesterday night? I heard that Daniel Lanois was singing there». For a second, I felt really bad >:(. Then I woke up and thought: Lanois ici? Dans le metro? Naooon. Impossible. It was again the Lanois-Lavoie misunderstanding. When I wanted to order Cool Water, I went to HMV (-Lavoie? -Non, Lanois! -Don't know, it's not in the catalog) and to Sam's (Hhmmm? Lanois?). When I wanted to buy W.Balls, it was different, though. I couldn't find it, so I talked to a salesman who seemed to hold Lanois in high esteem, and he was considering W.Balls as one of the 5 best albums of '95. But in general, people don't know his music. Lucky we are... Salut! It is >very strange in that there does not appear to be any drums or bass (despite >the comment to Brian). Anybody else notice this? I thought this was strange also - there does seem to be just some general foot-stomping in that particular song, but - don't know. I thought for a minute that he might be speaking to Brian Eno, who might have just been present for the recording, but it doesn't sound like him (Eno) speaking. Is it at all possible that drums were being recorded, in a drum booth, and just not mixed into what was released on the CD? I don't know enough about the studio process to know if this is possible - but somehow this doesn't seem very 'Lanois-esque' even if it is... I believe it is Wasega Beach. Wasega is a resort town on Georgian Bay in Southern Ontario. Great place to check out the fireworks display on the First of July-Canada Day. They (esp. the Latin Playboys) sound very 'quick and dirty' compared to the very conservative work he did with Crowded House. The Ron Sexsmith album (with the Lanois remix) does sound a little stark, but in a more atmospheric way... Anyway - I still suggest checking him out - I think Suzanne Vega's new album will be out soon if it already isn't - produced by him, no doubt.
