all the ACADIE subscribers. All I want to include (at this time) is your
name and E-mail address. If you have a personal home page, include the URL
and I will make a link.

Subject: Sick of Who?
Joining in on the who? talk, I have to say that it's quite annoying to
introduce Daniel Lanois as U2's producer when he is much much more. For a
brief time, the local radio station chat room (www.ksca.com.) was talking
about Lanois and someone sounded a little annoyed by L's work saying he has
so much stamp on people he's worked with. I told the dude to listen to L's
stuff then he wouldn't get annoyed 'cause then he's working with himself.
On a better note, I would have to say it's great to stumble across articles
that are totally unrelated to anything but mention L. For example, I
believe I was skimming through Hot Press reading an article on the Saw
Doctors and they described one of the songs as having excellent production
and said to imagine the sound as if L worked on it. (one can also argue
that it's stereotyping but since Saw Doctors are nice guys, I would take it
as a compliment.)
For those who happen to be in a book or record store, catch the April/May
issue of Dirty Linen with Emmylou Harris on the cover. The article is
really good, briefly mentioning her collaboration with L (picture too!) and
then going on to discuss her entire career. (Also read the interview with
Sharon Shannon; ex-Waterboy)
Not to sound like I'm going on a tangent but somewhat related is Steve
Earle's new album, "I Feel Alright." I still don't have W.Ball yet (!) but
I can tell you that Earle's album is excellent! It's part blues, country
(no twang), folk, (but as a whole, it's definitely rock) and great song
writing. A lot of the songs are also very singable which I haven't
experienced with an album in awhile . . .
["Cool Water" is so mysterious to me, it reminds me of an X-file!]

Subject: Daniel Lanois Newsletter
I have just discovered your site and I was absolutely thrilled. I have been a
Daniel Lanois fan for years. My brother drove me by Grant Avenue Studios in
the early 80s when I was still a teenager and told me that the best producer
in Canada was working out of there. This was before U2, Brian Eno et al. How
prophetic that turned out to be! I have had the chance to see him perform
numerous times in Canada and I have never been disappointed. The best had to
be when he appeared as a guest with the Downchild Blues Band for their 25th
anniversery gig at a small bar in Toronto (Grossman's). He had produced some
of their stuff in the 70s and he decided to come celebrate their longevity
with them. The bar only holds about 150 people and there he was standing just
5 feet away from me - having a beer and talking to friends. I was too shy to
say hello...
Anyway, I have a couple of questions...
1) I read that the CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation) produced a full
episode of Man Alive (a half hour show dealing with human spirituality) on
Daniel Lanois and his spiritual beliefs right after the release of Acadie,
and I was wondering if you would know anyone who would have a copy of this
tape. I'm sure that I could call the CBC but they charge about $75 for any
taped program and that is a bit steep for my budget.
2) In your newsletter, everyone keeps taking about the CD "Cool Water" and I
have never seen this around. Where would I be able to get a copy?

Subject: Folk Routes
Just a couple of futher bits of info on Daniel, he and brother BOb
have a studio in Hamiliton ONtario for about the past 15 years.
Daniel has worked with canadian folk artist like Stan ROgers
in a production capacity with a group called Le Heritage, also
recorded and written, and played guitar with Sylvia Tyson.
And with another Canadian group Stringband, in which he played
guitar, and backed the groups leader Bob Bossin, and NAncy Ahern...
.the sister of Brian. On that recording the band perform a
duet with Stan ROgers...Cdn folk legend.
Many other recording where made with Daniel around that time
.middle to late seventies.
I've just finish a brief article on his early history...and will
update you when more becomes available.

Hello ...
I looked up the lyrics for Beauty of Wynona in the hope of filling in some of
my gaps ... instead, here are some alternative suggestions:
Marie-Claire: instead of "la bidoune danceuse", how about "la vie d'une
danseuse" (the life of a dancer)
Death of a Train:
"I been twemty years on that Sault line" - pronounced as Sioux - cf Sault St
Marie in Rocky World.
For (??) "where are you", ? "Trudeau, oh where are you" (Pierre Trudeau, former
Prime Minister of Canada)
Rocky World:
"Pounding the blacktop with a habit to shake ..."
Instead of "Are you reading through me", how about "Ah, you really threw me"?
Isn't there a definitive version written down somewhere? - in a songbook? Or
perhaps someone could ask him?

Notes on the translation:
- my punctuation might not be right
- the Saxon genitive is as I learned it Lanois' without a second "s" but I
keep finding it everywhere with a second s (meaning like Lanois's), so I
did this here too
- I am sure my translation still sounds odd to you, in English one would
write the whole article a little different, I did my best with the German
text to present in English what it said
- in addition I think I am not born to translate.

The guy who translated it (he's German) told me that the text is
written in colloquial german, and he did the translation as accurately
as possible. He asked me to correct it...but he speaks better english
than I do...that's why you get the translation as is.
