I just readmy last "brilliant" submission to this formidable newsletter.
Again, I hope no one takes offense. I'm glad the elect few of us who
acknowledge Lanois' greatness can share our wealth of knowledge with each
other. I merely hope we all have his long term financial interests at heart.
Being an artist is a tough life. Accolades or no. Daniel is rich, beyond a
doubt. However, as his rabid fans, let us prove our loyalty by rewarding his
talent and prodigious work ethic with ourcommercial respect. Regretably,
money talks and everything else leaves you in a lurch (not very poetic, but
not profane). If you love o hear Daniel Lanois on record, in concert, via
video... prove it. Pay his French- Canadien butt!

An interesting question came up last time, the question of bootleg
recordings and the ethics of selling and buying them. Someone said, "My
point is this folks. Everytime someone buys those songs from a source other
than Warner Bros. or Lanois himself, Daniel gets nothing!" This is true---in
a way.
People should also remember that authors and song-writers don't get a cent
when you buy their work from a second-hand bookstore or a second-hand record
store (which, being a starving graduate student, is where I buy almost all
of my books and cds). But does the artist get nothing from this? I'd say
not. The words get read and the music gets heard.
I bought my first DL album (on vinyl) from a second-hand record store in
1989---and I loved that album. Since then I've been buying---direct from
real records stores when necessary---everything I can find with Daniel's
name of it, and that's something I woudn't have done had I not been exposed
to his music through "illegal" means.
I've also bought bootlegs and downloaded MP3s from www.napster.com, and
through these channels, I've exposed many people to the music of DL, and
have turned them ON to his music. And seeing how most people aren't
starving like I am, they don't have any problem buying his records (and
paying full price) direct from the company or what have. And Dan makes a
whole load of money. Good for him.
This isn't a theory. It's a fact. I've seen it with my own eyes. At the
same time, I do like to express my gratitude and show that I'm not trying to
steal from an artist (as a writer myself, in the end I do like to get paid
for my work). A couple times when I actually made a little cash from
selling some Peter Gabriel "promo" cds, I sent Peter himself some of the
money---which is more than he would have got from his record company. I've
know other people who have done this too. But PG is a fair exception---he
has a TON of uncollected material that would probably never get heard if it
wasn't for bootlegging.
Anyhow, this question comes every time someone mentions they have some
"promo" cds for sale (or trade). And even though it's an old question, it
deserves a response every time. Ain't nothing wrong with having a
conscience.
By the way, I have a copy of the TEATRO video (by Wim Wenders) I'd like to
trade if anyone is interested. It contains in-studio performances of songs
from the whole album---they are not the same recordings as appear on the
album. Featuring Emmylou Harris and the rest of the band. Some minor, and
uninteresting, interview material. But excellent performances all around.
If you liked the album you'll like the video/movie.
Email me, not the list, if you want to trade. (I have one copy.)
See ya,

Just want to say, hey, it's nice to get a little more DL any way you can,
(Million Dollar Band is a great STK) but I sure wish we'd get a new DL
record and some shows.
By the way, if there are DL fans who are unaware of his production and
playing on Brian Blade's "Fellowship", let me once again recommend it. It's
informed by jazz traditions but there's so much more to this record. It's
got a vibe, a priceless element on a recording.

Better to focus on the many things DL has done with other artists like
Luscious Jackson, Dylan, Neville Bros., the Million Dollar Band Etc.,
there's plenty around of his own work for a long show. He's on all that u2
and Gabriel stuff too, here and there, read the credits. DL is the only one
who plays in this way I believe.
All the best

Hi Kenley,
someone asked about ron sexsmith on the list.
I don't want my name associated with it, but it is almost certain that
steve earle will be producing the next ron record.
Dan produced parts of Rons first record.
I love it.
He also took the cover photo for that disc.
Jocelyne Lanois is moving to a big studio space in Dundas ONtario (very
close to Hamilton).
Dundas is where their mother has been living for the last couple years.
anyway,
hope you are well

I saw Ron Sexsmith in concert (for about the sixth/seventh time!) on Sunday
12th March in Dublin - the concert was preceded by an interview with a
radio broadcaster. Ron indicated that it will most likely be Steve Earle
who will produce his next album.
For what it's worth I got the impression from the text of a previous
Sexsmith interview I had read that he preferred the Froom produced version
of 'There's a rythym' to the Lanois version, the latter collaboration
having been a suggestion from the record company. (For those of you
unfamiliar both versions are carried on the 'Ron Sexsmith' album).
As an aside I was fortunate enough to have been introduced to Lanois at a
party a few days earlier and got the chance to bore him for a few minutes.
He seemed a very genuine and unassuming person.

Released in March of
1987, U2's The Joshua Tree quickly became the fastest-selling album in
British chart
history, selling
almost 250,000 copies within the first week of release. In the US, it was
equally successful,
topping the Billboard
album chart for nine weeks, spending 58 weeks in the Top 40 there and earning
a
Grammy Award for
Album of the Year.
The Joshua Tree gave
birth to several major hit singles, including "With or Without You" and "I
Still Haven't
Found What I'm
Looking For," both of which reached Number 1 on the Billboard Top 100 in the
US, and
"Where The Streets
Have No Name."
The story of the
making of The Joshua Tree is told here via interview and archival film
footage, with
contributions from
band members Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen. U2's long-time
manager Paul
McGuinness reveals how the album catapulted the band into the category of
rock superstars,
and there are
contributions from Elvis Costello in the role of a major U2 fan, re-mix
producer Steve
Lillywhite, and, of course, co-producers
Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois.
Here we learn the true story from Brian Eno
of how the master tape for "Where The Streets Have No Name" was almost
destroyed and
how a forgotten birthday resulted in one of
U2's best-ever songs. Packed with reminiscences and powerful performances,
this is the story
of one of the most famous and best records
of the '80s, a true Classic Album.

Subject: Million Dollar Hotel
Some of you may remember that I'm the guy who didn't
like "Teatro" very much, and was actually appalled at
the high honors heaped on Bob's last one. I publicly
longed for a return to the roots we all know and love
so well. I wanted another "Acadie", another
"Wynona"... something, anything...to quench my
powerful thirst for his voice, his style, his
inimitable soundscapes. Know what I mean, Vern?
Well, 'Ring Them Bells, St. Peter' because my odyssey
through the wastelands in search of the Master has
mercifully ended. He is back! Do not pass Go, Do not
collect $200... just get yourself as fast as you can
to the CD store and buy "The Million Dollar Hotel"
soundtrack and you will surely agree.
Now don't get me wrong -- this is not blazing guitars
ala "Cool Water" -- it's not just another theme and
variation on "Wrecking Ball" (though that's not a bad
idea) -- it's actually closer in mood to the classic
Eno/Lanois collaboration of "Apollo". It's also Dan's
closest move yet to jazz, albeit decidedly downbeat,
almost film noir, but sleeker and more lush
simultaneously (one of his trademarks, wouldn't you
agree?).
Let's give credit where credit is due, okay? This
brilliant album is as much Bono's as it is anyone's.
Talk about regaining your touch! Of course, it didn't
hurt to have such aces as Brian Blade, Jon Hassell,
Bill Frisell, Eno, Larry Mullen, Mark Howard, even the
legendary English session player, Chris Spedding.
Given this gene pool of talent perfectly suited to
Daniel's technique, is it any wonder that they succeed
at the highest level?
His sonic signature is everywhere -- without knowing a
thing about this album, you wouldn't be two cuts into
a blind listening, before you would shout "LANOIS"!!
Every aspect of his ability is there -- producer,
songwriter, lead vocal, harmony vocal (the one with
Bono is heavenly), lead and rhythm guitars, even pedal
steel! And people, if there is any filler on this CD,
I couldn't find it.
I'd like to see our group discuss this album. You
already know my opinion -- it's a masterpiece.

I just want to set the record straight publicly.
I made the mistake of dismissing this project at first. I didn't give it a

Shame on me.
What a brilliant and subtle recording this is.
It really took me a couple of days to begin to hear this music.
What a lineup! Wow.
Million Dollar Hotel is really fantastic.
Sure hope the film shows here on the East Coast of the USA.
