the Edge "stole" his guitar sound from Keith Levene, the guitarist for PiL
(Public Image Limited). Don't believe me? Then you should pick up a copy of
PiL's 1978 debut and hear it for yourself. Or download it from Napster.

I thinks Lanois should produce the next Jayhawks record. That's my two cents.

 Well, while I still haven't heard anything that to me is concrete about
Jerry Garcia performing Death of a Train. I am pleased to have stirred up the
conversation a little bit. I still maintain that during his last tour with
JGB, I heard him do this tune at Hampton Coluseum in VA. The setlist for that
show is wrong.

 On another related matter. Napster has at least 3 versions of Jerry doing
The Maker out there. Keep searching and you will find them eventually. You
can also find most if not all of the Cool Water recordings on Napster. Can
anyone tell me what the full song list for the Cool Water CD is?

 I have finally heard Red Dirt Girl, and I have to disagree with the person
who said it didn't sound that good. I thought it sounded different from
Wrecking Ball, but you can still catch the Lanois influences when you compare
it to all of Emmy Lou's previous work. Since I hate twangy country music with
a passion I am enjoying being able to hear country artists expanding out of
the traditional mold and recording things that cross over into styles more
pallatable to me. That may be a selfish way of looking at it, but what the
hell it's my ears, taste and money. :)

My copy of "Red Dirt Girl" says WEA Mfg/CA and it sounds real good. I was 
blown away by the songwriting too. You should get yourself a new copy.

I was just wondering if anyone had heard the Bootleg CD of Danny performing 
live in Toronto 1993.

The CD runs for 47minutes and has outakes of The messenger, The Maker, and 
Rockworld.

The whole show is done unplugged and has been recorded beautifully. Dan's 
sound is phenominal and his voice is great to.

Just wanted to if the CD is a common one and if anyone has heard of it and 
also if anyone has anything else live on Danny.

The disk is called Cool Water and has been pressed in Italy.

Pete, I dare hope this story is not true. I myself believe this friend of
yours mistook Bob for Dan's younger brother: Ron. Ron is the one that is a
chef and indeed runs a restaurant in or near Hamilton. I met Ron some seven
or eight years ago in New Orleans and he's a great guy etc., but not a
musician or producer - just like (I think) Bob isn't a chef.

Like Stan above, I also would like to get my hands on the songs listed in
his e-mail from last issue. Also, the song "Gonna Need Somebody"(?) that
appears briefly in the "Rocky World" video. Does anyone know if this song
is available anywhere? All help is appreciated. By the way, have been
listening to U2's ATYCLB a lot since it came out and I think it's a rock
solid effort - possibly my favorite outside of "Achtung Baby". Nice to see
them bounce back after "Pop".

I have nearly the opposite take on the sound of Red Dirt Girl. Let me first
say that the performance on the album is one of the most moving things I
have heard in some time. Emmylou seems to be bleeding out some of these
songs straight from the heart.

But regarding the sound, I also hear the distortion you are mentioning, but
only in the first track. I was first turned off by it, but then chalked it
up to a producers "artistic touch". Really, I am accepting that it was
meant to be like this.

But regarding the bass, I get an unusually high amount of rumbling bass from
my cd! In fact, I must crank down the bass, defeating it about 50% below
"flat" (about 9 o'clock on the dial).....on both my home and car system in
order for it to be "listenable" (IMO). I can't think of any other cd in my
collection where I feel I need to do this. Once the bass is down, I am
happy as a clam to listen to the wonderful mix of sounds.

I agree, something seems odd with the recording, but I look as it as a
unique thing. However, I can understand where your disappointment in the
sound is coming from. I am just so delighted that you don't have the same
opinion of the performance. PEOPLE: you MUST get this cd, with strange
sound anomalies or not!

Add Charlie Sexton Sextet's Under the Wishing Tree to that list. It's a 
fantastic piece of work, which has Malcolm definately wearing his "Lanois" 
hat on that one. For those of us in our mid-late 20's who grew up as a 
product of the 80's may remember Charlie Sexton as a 15-16 year old with 
huge hair and drum machine infested bad pop tunes. This album was a 
dramatic departure, and his first (and only album to date) venture after 
the ill-fated Arc Angels project with the "Double Trouble" rhythm section. 
Under the Wishing Tree is an album close to my heart, and has been so for a 
few years now.

Just my 2 pence!

I read Poetic Wax's comment on the last Acadie that Malcolm Burn earned a
part of the Lanois sound. No argument there.

Only thing I want to add is that the list of Burn's 'best' production albums
did not include Stephan Eicher's recent album Louanges. This is a
masterpiece of Malcolms if there ever was one. I simply cannot imagine
anyone who is a serious Lanois fan not loving this album. Period.

Hi Christian & Arcadie-

I agree with you regarding the sound quality of Red Dirt Girl.
I also thought it was a digital manufacturing fault, but maybe not, as my
copy was manufactured in Australia by Warner Music.
I would guess it is a result of using higher than normal compression ratios
in the recording or mastering process which is a bit of a recent trend in
Lanois/Buddy Miller recording philosophies .

Check out Steve Earls Transendental Blues which is very highly compressed
and also distorted.

It actually works in an `effect' kind of way on the Steve Earle album as
Steves voice is very rasspy & dry unlike Emmylous' beautiful & ethereal reed
like tone. Also the Steve Earle album sounds like it has been fattened in
the mastering process to compensate for the compression which Red Dirt Girl
hasn't.Similarly on Willie Nelson Theatro and Milk Cow Blues albums which
are right on the edge of analogue compression.Again, the Willie Nelson vocal
is very dry creating the effect of intimacy, whispering a story in you ear.
Unfortunately it just doesn't always translate in the digital realm of zeros
and ones. On first listen I also thought to return the cd. However ears
adjust and there is a resonance deeper in the songs than the audio quality
alone.The interesting thing is that these highly developed artists are in
fact pushing hard at the boundries of American music traditions.Sometimes
technicality goes by the wayside when lightning strikes in a recording
take.What Im hearing (do you still care:)is a shift by these artists in
spacial ratio between the band track and the vocal narrative track.Pushing
forward as well as reaching back to something more traditional in the story
telling form.Either that or its just distorted.Remember the mantra...

know where the song "Diego Painting" came from? It's gorgeous. Must have an

Wait, he did a version of Little Sadie? The old song written by
"Traditional?" I need a copy of that as well. For anyone who really digs
that song, you should hear the Mark Lanegan version on his album "I'll Take
Care of You." Great CD. If you don't yet have it, you need it--his cover of
"Carry Home" is positively beautiful.

In a perfect world, I'd still have Lanegan and Lanois teaming up to do a CD.
That would make me the happiest boy in the world. Or, something like that...
