Eric Iverson remarked: Anyway, I'm not sure of this but someone once told me it was a Robert Mapplethorp photo. If anyone finds out it I would be interested. As the liner notes to the CD says, the photo was taken by Jan Saudek, and is from the book Love, life, death & other such triffles. I'd imagine someone on the list has been interested enough to look this book up, right? My personal feeling is that the cover was altered simply so the album didn't have to carry a 'parental warning' tag which could potentially affect which retailers would carry it. Tin Machine did the same thing a few years ago, altering where the title was placed over a picture of some naked statues to avoid the sticker. No doubt the use of the phrase 'American Version' probably was the result of some political statement as well. Lastly, there was a little talk in the last digest about whether it is Brian or Brady Blade playing with ELH; I would guess the latter as Brian is still in his regular gig of playing with the Joshua Redman Quartet, the last time I heard. -Kevin ---- Kevin A. I love you all! You all really put some faith back to bad people I run across. :) I feel really guilty that I managed to find a second copy of Cool Water for my brother. Some of you can't even find it! Anyhow, I feel really guilty and fortunate but I will certainly keep my eye out for a copy the next time I go. Meanwhile, anyone still salivating for this CD, e-mail to me your interest and I can get it for you (not buy it for you, though :) ) and I won't charge you anything extra except for shipping and handling. I'm not making a profit, just wanting to spread my friendship and some Lanois sounds. . . (sorry, US money/check only and I guess I'll have to do this first come first serve basis) I, Shu-Shu, have nothing more to say today. Bye 4 now. Suren Did you know this very same brother (Ron Lanois) chased me on New Orleans' French Market? :) This guy really is a great one, and I'm sorry I never met him again after spending some great time with him and his Canadian friends in New Orleans back in April '93... He even got us into a sold-out concert in Margaritaville (used to be called Storyville and is featured on the Robbie Robertson cd of the same name) by Zachary Richard! Those days... ah, one can only long for them but always remember they are never coming back! :( Now I'm gonna enjoy my memories again :) Marja [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: ElevenShad@aol.com Date: Mon, 22 Apr 1996 18:36:38 -0400 Subject: Buddy Miller guitar rig (not very much info, though...) I was on the Daryl Johnson side of the stage at the Emmylou show, so I didn't really get a good look (plus I have wretched eyesight anyway!), but I can tell you that one of the guitars that Buddy Miller was playing was a red hollow body (Gibson? Not sure...). He had a huge rack of effects, but there was no way I could see what he was using. Odd, as he played clean just about the whole time, as I remember. He had a nice, big, warm clean tone, didn't vary it very much, and it sounded like he maybe used a little chorusing and maybe a little reverb or a touch of delay, not anything significant. Didn't sound very much like Daniel Lanois at all in his guitar playing, even when playing DL parts. Definitely had more of a country style. He's also a very gifted guitar player, occasionally doing picking parts and short little runs leading into the next chorus or verse that required quite a bit of finesse to pull off. Not a bad voice, either...sorry I couldn't see the guitar stuff better, but I thought I'd add these comments. Oh, yeah, he appeared to be pressing pedals, but whether these were switching his rack gear, or whether they were actually stompboxes, I don't know... When DL came on stage, BTW, it really caused the whole show to be more rock and Hendrixian, and interestingly, he played stuff that didn't showcase the more ethereal side of his guitar playing. It was definitely quite a contrast to what Buddy Miller was playing. -Ken/Eleven Shadows [][][]][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 23 Apr 1996 10:25:21 -0600 From: igranof1@swarthmore.edu (ilmi granoff) Subject: excerpt from Karen Brady, the truth about another solo Hey all, I got some really exciting mail the other week from karen brady (look on the inside of the cd jackets), the manager of Kingsway Studios, New Orleans. He and Lucious Jackson were in New Orleans the last two weeks of march. Here is what she said about him: As far as Dan is concerned, he is currently working with the New York band Lucious Jackson, producing their next record. They wer just here for two weeks and I think it sounds amazing, a bit of a departure for both Dan and the band. I expect it will be scheduled for fall release but cannot say for certain. I would imagine Dan will be back to work on a new solo album later this summer with no release date in site. So save up those fifteen bucks for a fall release . . . This may also shed some light on his solo work. There were some rumors on the last letter. My guess is that *The Spectator* was including Cool Waters as one of his albums, since the article was from '94, and the album was released in '93. It may have still been in print when the interview was done. I don't think there is any other album, although I have heard that he plays on the Bob Dylan import Stadium of the Damned (an 80's recording). This may be from a tour for OH mercy! which DL produced and performed on (with Daryl and Malcolm) The good news is that he will probably be working on a new one this summer. yours deeply, ilmi [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Wed, 24 Apr 1996 20:02:23 -0500 From: Line Lariviere Subject: Replies Michele wrote: i also saw someone enquiring about DL's personal life. i wonder how much of it is really our business. i mean, i would like to know as much as the next guy what he's really like, but give me a break. i think he probably values his privacy. let's try and keep it that way. I'm glad I read this. You're right Michele (Ciao and good luck! :)), those who have met with Monsieur Lanois should pass over some details in silence (I mean, very personal stuff), so we could avoid inappropriate comments like one we once read here (%##$*&*!!!). But keep talking about him and his work! I should add that usually people posting here are real gentlefolks. I'm amazed by the pertinence of your comments. It's very interesting! The Wynona cover photo has been taken by Jan Saudek (1993, from the book Love, life, death & other such trifles). That's written in the booklet :). I think Dale mentioned it before: photo on canadian edition cover is not censored, although there's a targeted sticker on the wrapping paper. Yes, it's a very beautiful picture. And finally, Emmylou Harris is (...) also in another folk publication, but unfortunately, I can't think of the name -- Acoustic Guitar? I heard that the Cool water concert was transmitted on canadien TV. I wonder if there is someone outhere who's willing to trade it. I've haven't got anything with Lanois except Cool water, but I've got plenty of other good stuff. Bye for now, Martin Hedlund [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Sat, 27 Apr 1996 01:35:25 -0700 (MST) From: Antonio S Abeyta <21113@ef.gc.maricopa.edu> Subject: Soundtrack work/Camilla and a song on the sountrack 'Last of the Mohicans' to be entertaining as well. I love soundtracks and I bet Mr. Lanois would be an awesome soundtrack composer What is the song on this soundtrack? Agreed that he would do a great job in soundtrack work - and as someone mentioned in one of the earlier digests, he has send out a promotional disc apparently for the purpose of getting soundtrack work - so far I've only heard his stuff in I think one movie (Camilla) and one movie trailer (A Perfect World). (Besides the Apollo: Atmospheres and Sountracks stuff he did with Eno that was used in some versions of a NASA documentary) RE: Camilla - I mentioned this before on the list - a few of his songs off of Acadie are used as 'background' music in the movie, and one of the main characters 'sings' The Messenger only to be booed off the stage :) (one song is listed in the credits as its title being Public Enemy, yet I think Under A Stormy Sky was used and NOT listed in the credits - maybe an alternate name? Confusing.) Anway, I don't know anything about actual score work done by he and Jocelyn, even though I read the same thing. The music is listed as being done by someone else, I believe, and I don't remember seeing anything on the actual soundtrack... Hmm.
