Please, can someone help me? After I don't know how long of listening to
Cool Water I am still just as excited but I am craving some "rockin" LL (live
Lanois). In particular I am looking for a bootleg of the House of Blues show
I went to here in L.A. I stood the whole show right next to the mixing board
but did't have the guts to ask for a recording though I had the blank tape.
Also the guy standing right next to me very non-chalantly brought in a mic
and recorder so don't tell me there isn't a copy around!!!
If I sound a bit rude just understand that once you experience Monsieur
Lanois in person you become a predator who has just tasted blood for the
first time. You hunger and hunger for more!

What did the Margaritaville bar have to do with Robbie Robertson's Storyville
album? I know he worked with some New Orleans musicans at Dan's studio there
and the album cover was shot at the Cabildo in Jackson Square. Did Robertson
perform at Margaritaville or something?

Subject: Acadie video

Hello,

I am new to the newsletter, and have finally caught up on the archives.

I have a Daniel Lanois Acadie concert video
(VHS, approx. 90+ min. Mono, good quality) taped from 1992
(I think - the beer commercials were particularily idiotic back then).

It is from a MuchMusic (canadian MTV) Big Ticket show taped in Toronto.
Songs include: The Maker, Indian Red, cool version of Little Sister, etc.
The band: DL, MB, DJ, RJ, BD.

Anyone willing to trade? Let me know what you have.
I would like video, audio, interviews of DL, Nevilles, Robbie R., ELH,
Chris Whitley, Steve Earle, The Band, Innocence Mission, etc.

Here is some possible production work I would love to see DL take on:

Steve Earle
Neil Young
Rush (sorry Ken but you started it - but don't worry, it won't happen)
Shawn Colvin

ELH show review 4/4/96 Vancouver, B.C.:

I will keep it short - great sound, great lighting, great band.
A must see. "The Maker" continues to transcend. I have seen DL, ELH and
Jerry Garcia (R.I.P.) perform it - words cannot explain.

A friend of mine drove 300 miles to see ELH. A huge fan. We hung
around the tour bus after the show and waited. Suprised to see Daryl J walk
back to the hotel by himself without anyone clueing in.
I left, but my friend hung around for almost 1 hour when she finally came
out. He received a autograph and talked to her for 20 minutes on the tour
bus!!! Is that class or what?

Gotta go.... C U Later

Dear Ant,

I think it was you who recommended my two best recent purchases :
Big Head Todd and the Monsters and the 1st Chris Whitley album.
They are both excellent records and so is the new/only R. Sexmith.
The closest a starving DL fan (waiting for the 3rd coming )can get to the
feel and sound of the man himself.
Took these along with the rest of my Lanois solo/collabs on a road journey
thro the snow covered lonely spring time Rockies with my girlfriend and it
is the best environment for DL ambience appreciation.

Try it if you haven't.

Thanks for keeping me going.

Suren

Subject: Daniel Lanois stuff

Hello there--

I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your Unofficial
Daniel Lanois Page. I was especially impressed with the
lyrics to "The Collection of Marie Claire" with all the
translations. Very cool. I thought I might humbly submit
some lyrics for "Death of a Train". You have a question mark
at the beginning of the sixth verse--I believe the line is
"Trudeau, where are you?" referring to the ex-prime minister
of Canada. Also, I think you're more on the mark with
"Newfoundland, land of my father" in the second
verse--another Canada thing. And maybe, in "Indian Red",
it's "throw my net in the river" instead of "bed" but it's really
hard to tell.

Anyway, hope you don't mind my contributions, and kudos to
you for the work you've done. It's much appreciated!

Hey la hey--

Desiree Hunter

Dear Kenly,
I've been enjoying all the interchange on Acadie, and all the nice
manners displayed. I think we're doing Dan justice in discussing his
work on the higher road. I don't know, but I believe that DL was
involved with the Peter Gabriel album The Last Temptation of Christ.
I used that as a sonic example when my producer and engineer mixed one
of my songs a few years ago. It was absolutely beautiful. It's worth a
listen for all of us who so admire Daniel's music and talent.
Take care, and thanks to you and everybody else for making this
newsletter so much fun.
I was in Hamilton last November at a Goddo gig, (a legendary Canadian
band) and Goddo himself drove me past Grant Avenue Studio. I wonder if
Dan knows we do things like that? Bet he'd be surprised.
	Peace and kindness to all,
	Virginia Wagner

I'm sorry I'm completely off topic...but it gets back to DL on occasion.
I realize that probably most people on this mailing list do not jive with
what Rush does. ( myself, I do not own any of their records)...however,
ignoring the sometimes annoying vocals of Geddy Lee, the musical
substance to what they do does have significant merit. For DL to work
with them would prove that DL is capable of producing artists from a
greater array of musical backgrounds...it is this quality of DL that I
admire most. Let's face it...I would never purchase an ELH recording unless
knowing DL had something to do with it. (call me a poseur if you wish,
but I've never been able to appreciate country music, unfortunately) It
is DL's experimental side that has brought him the recognition he much
deserves and should he close his focus onto a few select artists, it
would take away from that creativity
in the recording studio. As soon as artists congregate themselves, there is
an increased likelyhood of their work turning into some easy to sell
formatted radio garbage. By no means am I attacking the criticism of
Rush,...rather, I'm trying to clarify where I'm coming from...what I
usually hear on the radio is simply a good voice with decent at best
lyrics, but I'm completely disappointed with the music...Rush has
disappointing vocals, but the music catches my ear.

>>>Buddy Miller was playing... a huge rack of effects, he appeared to be
pressing pedals, but whether these were switching his rack gear, or whether
they were actually stompboxes, I don't know... but there was no way I could see
what he was using.

I find it a bit ironic that Buddy Miller is using a big rack full of gear to
support this tour. The tones on that record are so pure and simple that
approaching them with a 1/2 mile of circuitry between guitar and speaker seems a
bit heavy-handed and very Nashville. Although, when I saw DL and ELH the front
of house sound was being engineered by Mark Howard. If he is off working with
Dan then the convenience of having the engineer on the record running sound for
the live shows would be lost. THis might result in the individual players
taking on more responsibilitry for recreating tones off the record.

>>>When DL came on stage, BTW, it really caused the whole show to be more "rock"
and "Hendrixian", and interestingly, he played stuff that didn't showcase the
more ethereal side of his guitar playing.

I would love to hear this side of his playing. I've always been curious about
his other influences beyond Hendrix.Taking more of a straight guitar approach
would be revealing to these, I would think.

BTW, are there more So Ca dates scheduled for ELH?

Billy
