And I was definitely assessing it while divorced from the movie, which I hadn't seen as of last posting. And my opinion of the actual CD is still basically what it was. I had been thinking of other soundtracks, such as the ones Mark Snow does for the "X-Files", or certainly the Peter Gabriel soundtrack for "Last Temptation of Christ" -- I felt that those held their own as bodies of work, and had been hoping that Lanois would be able to pull off the same, even when divorced from the visual of the film. I still don't feel that it holds up very well as primarily "listening music." However, I have now seen "Sling Blade", which BTW is a very engaging movie, and I do feel that DL's work was quite effective within the context of the movie. But without the visuals, it just doesn't do it for me. It's still disappointing. But in the movie, it offered the appropriate mood and emotional support needed for the scenes, which is the primary responsibility of any soundtrack. For those several people on this list who happen to know that I have done a little bit of music for various art videos, I am definitely not saying that I could better (of course, I'm not saying I *couldn't* do better, either -- this is not a comparison). It is not easy to do a score. However, one of the things I noticed about DL's work here is that he got something going that didn't appear to be frame-dependent, or dependent on any of the activity occuring in the film. He would set up a general mood and ride that same vibe for the appropriate scene. It worked, I think. Bear in mind that this is not a criticism, simply an obervation. The music that I have done for the videos was also not frame-dependent or activity-dependent either, so this isn't necessarily a measure of effectiveness, although I will say that I believe it would be far more difficult to create something that *is* frame-dependent! Anyway, more babbling and comments! Thanks for both those opinions! -Ken/Eleven Shadows [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Mon, 30 Dec 1996 19:44:16 -0500 (EST) From: Stacy ZurbriggSubject: sling blade Not sure where this letter is going to end up, it's a question that I'd like to ask the readers of Acadie. I have been searching for this Sling Blade and much to my dismay, can't find it anywhere. Does anyone know where I might get it or any relevent information that I might need in order to get it in Canada? (specilfically, London, Ontario.) Appreciate it. I'm just learning how to play and Daniel is my first choice of artists. Could you PLEASE let me know if there is a website that you know about....Thanks so much!!!! (It's like a Robert Altman of musicians!) Dwight Yoakum has a supporting role in that movie. Vic Chestnutt (Sweet Relief 2) makes an appearance--I was also wondering if any of those other fellows in that group were musicians y'all familiar with? Of course, the entire movie has Daniel Lanois music which I thought was appropriately spiritual and chilling to the character. (One song with Emmylou on vocals) And if y'all stick around for the end credits to listen to DL's "The Maker," play close attention to the credits because he thanks one of my favorite musicians--Greg Brown!!! The movie itself is good and it's just even better and more fun to see the musicians you like on screen! :) [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 07 Jan 1997 20:31:16 -0700 From: Shaun Thingvold Subject: Making of Wrecking Ball Do you have any idea how I could get a copy of the making of wrecking ball documentary.
