Subject: Hard Disk Crash & Lost Mail...PLEASE READ
From: Kenley Neufeld, ACADIE Editor

Just a quick note...this past week my Hard Disk crashed and I lost some
data. Specifically, I lost two messages that were sent last Sunday to be
put in this Digest. If you sent a message for this Digest and it is not here,
please resend it.

I also lost the message from a certain individual who had a recording
of a DL show; please resend it. This message came about two weeks ago.

I don't believe I lost anyones email address so we are in good shape in that
area. Hope this doesn't mess anyone up more than it's messed me up!

Hi!
I just found out from the Chris Whitley homepage
(http://www.phpad.com/whitley/home) that there is a new album coming,
release date is set to february 18. It didn't say anything about Daniel
being involved, actually in one of the inteviews Chris said that "Living
with the Law", which Malcolm Burns produced and Lanois played some guitar
on, was not the debut he would have wanted, he said something about Malcolm
not knowing what to do with him. The new album will be called Terra
Incognita, and he says it is something in between Law and "Din of Extacy",
a bit sweeter, more pop than Din. I know a lot of people who liked Law were
very disappointed with Din, but personally I think it is great, very raw,
almost primal energy, but of course very far away from the Lanois mood.
I'll be back when I've heard the new one.

I wanted to thank you Kenley for your hard work on this newsletter---it's
great.

I live in New Orleans and occasionally pass by Kingsway on the way to work.
I have seen some goings on but have never been fortunate enough to see Mr.
Lanois. I saw him perform here in 1993 at the Jazz and Heritage festival
when TBOW first came out.

I have been a fan of his since 1984 and was surprized when he bought the
mansion in 1989.

I work with local radio and tv personalities and a few have met him and all
have said good things.

Does anyone know where they are recording the Dylan cd? In "Rocky World" DL
said he at first wanted to record the other cd in Sante Fe. I was wondering
if he wanted to record this one outside of N.O. as well. I believe Dylan has
a house here also--so maybe they did want to leave town.

Our local PBS station is supposed to run the Emmylou Harris documentary this
March. If I should miss it or they don't show it, I would be interested in
maybe exchanging some video with someone who has it.

Anyway, I think it would be great if DL could participate in these
discussions.

Thanks again and if anyone is interested---there are a few good interviews
and pictures of DL floating around the internet if anyone wants to look
around. I got about 850 matches to his name and am slowly going through all
of them.

This is a response to Michael Lawler. I am one lof the lucky ones i guess. I
found both Rocky world and Cool water at....... Best Buy in Mesa Arizona...
go figure. nyone out here live near some Best Buys head donw there and clean
'em out. I found a copy for my firend at a tempe Best Buy as well. They said
that once it was gone they couldn't order any more in.. ?? go figure. The
Rocky World video should be easier to get than Cool Water. If I find any
more I will post it here for sale.. :) Let the bidding begin!!!!

If DL were to listen in or join our little group I think I would scream
:):). Now to think of some intelligent questions to ask him.....

Always ask the question
The question about the cargo you are carrying...

Michael Brook has recorded the soundtrack to the new Kevin Spacey film
"Albino Alligator," some Usual reservoir Suspects hostage movie. The
soundtrack, of course, is up there with Brook's previous discs, and I
think, from one or two listens to the promo, that Lanois sings (at least)
on the final track. Unfortunately, I don't have the credits, but I'll post
as soon as I confirm it. The album is on 4AD.

You have stated that Daniel Lanois is working with Dylan again on a
new album, which is excellent news as far as I'm concerned, as I am a
great admirer of Oh Mercy! (Many people on the Dylan newsgroup
dislike OM intensely, for reasons I cannot begin to fathom.) We would
appreciate it if you would let us know if you know whether the new
album will consist of original songs, rather than cover versions, like
the most recent Dylan albums. Any further info from you would also be
greatly appreciated.

Subject: Cool Water

Hi, I just subsribed. I've been a big fan of Daniel Lanois since The
Unforgettable Fire.

Two things. I noticed you said to let you know if you missed a concert
he gave. My wife and I saw Daniel play in Geneva. I cant remember the
precise date, but it was on the tour he did following For the Beauty of
Wynona. I would put the date in the month of June, 1993. For what it's
worth, it was an amazing show........made all the more enjoyable by the
fact that there were not more than 100 people in the place. Daniel
referred to it as "the intimate concert" and he was right. If you
really need to pin the date down, it was their show immediately before
heading to Amsterdam.

Second thing. I hadn't realized until now that he has a third album
(Cool Water). I would REALLY appreciate it if you could please let me
know where I can get my hands on this.

Best regards,

Dave Meddings

Dwight Yoakam was on Letterman a while back and mentioned that Sling Blade
is out in New York and L.A. and will be released widely in late Feb. I've
been seeing a lot of Oscar ruckus concerning the movie - Like
Entertainment Weekly said though - unlikely that the Soundtrack will be
nominated for anything because of the politics, unfortunately.

Okay, I'll give you that :) - Peter Gabriel set out on a completely different
objective with his soundtrack, though, once he got going decided to turn
it into an album that could stand separate from the movie. As far as I'm
concerned it is "the" perfect album and yet unmatched as an original
score. (But we all know - if there's anyone who COULD do it... :) )

I don't mean to beat this subject to death, but - the more I
listen to the album, the more I disagree with this - I don't think a
person could really compare them, but I think 'Sling Blade' fits together
better as an album than PG's 'So' which has _almost_ too much variation.
Sling Blade might not have the continuity of (the great albums) Apollo,
The Pearl, etc - but as far as what might be cosidered deep listening - I
think it can be achieved. Unless of course we're talking about a whole
different level of 'deep' :)

Anyway - I know people are sick of reading this argument - sorry. :)

Subject: Random stuff - Last of the Mohicans, Whitley, Tricky..

Random information and discoveries:

I finally found out what the deal is with the Last of the Mohicans score:
One of the tracks (composed by Trevor Jones) is called "The Glade Part II"
and is "based on 'Orchestral Mohican' - written by Daniel Lanois" It's
kind of a quiet track with very cool deep bass parts - the melody
sounds vaguely familiar - like Dan may have used it somewhere else - the
first thing that came to mind was "Phone Call" or "Bettina" from Sling Blade,
but I don't know why - they don't really sound alike. I wonder if he had
done more of the score? BTW: the album is pretty good as far as sweeping
orchestrations go - it's good background music - not for concentrating
(deep listening?) :)

For those not keeping up with the Chris Whitley list - there was an
article in Billboard recently on his soon to be released album that was
recorded (with Mark Howard, if I recall?) at Dan's studio in Oxnard - not a
lot of info, but a good article - and exciting! - Chris Whitley turning
heads - again! :)

New Music Suggestion: Can't remember if I mentioned him, but "Nil Lara" -
from Cuba - Saw him open for Big Head Todd a while back - very very nifty.

Concert Suggestion: For a somewhat surreal and _extremely_ intense
performance, go see Tricky live if you can. Just saw him two nights ago
here in Phoenix - wow.

Enough out of me - Ant
