This is a gentle reminder to everyone to please change the subject
line when you are replying to a Digest. As you can see above, I
had to "create" alternate subject lines for far to many messages this
week. It helps us all if you tell us what your message is about.

Many thanks and keep up the great dialog; I love it!

Just want to mention that Chris Whitley's new album Terra Icognito is fantastic
and I was recently at Kingsway Studios to do an interview with Chris for his
web page. Chris will appear on David Letterman on March 19th, 1997. Daniel
is responsible for giving him his break and introducing him to the biz.

It's not Lanois singing but Michael Stipe. Go figure. Then again, when I
first saw Philadelphia I thought that Streets of Philadelphia was Lanois,
not Springsteen. The soundtrack to the film is still great, though.

I just saw the Wrecking Ball documentary on PBS. I have always been an
admirer of both Emmylou and Lanois, and naturally I found the whole
thing to be immensely entertaining. I dug out an old Neville Brothers
CD, and remembered that Lanois had collaborated with Eno, whose Another
Green World remains on my top ten album list. I pulled Acadie from my
cassette tape collection, which I bought in England when I lived there
without CD technology. But also I have been preoccupied with that
Emmylou disc since it came out...I think it is such a magical
combination of muscial forces and nothing was lost on me. To see them
both on film together only added to the enigma and romance of the music.
This is a strange idea for a home page though...does D.L. know of its
existence?

hi,
sorry to hear about your hard drive =(
this is ron. i think i am the one you are asking for.

here is my original letter to you:

To all the Lanois Fans:
		Help me out!
I have in my hot little hands an unbelievable recording of Daniel Lanois
live in Seattle in September of 95. I was producing a local tv show at the
time, and when I heard Lanois was playing a few unannounced gigs, I thought I
would try to get an interview. So I called the label and got promptly shut
down. Not wanting to miss the opportunity, I went to venue early on Night 1
of 2, and walked past the door man to listen to sound check. Lanois, Darryl
Johnson on backup vocals and bass, and Brian Blade on drums (he made
everyone's jaw drop, he is awesome!). After sound check I asked the engineer
if I could set up an interview for the next night, and that I had spoken to
the label. He looked at me and said, "I don't know, why don't you go ask
Daniel?"
So I walked over to Daniel, drinking a cup of tea, and said, "Can I
interview you tomorrow night?" After a few clarifying questions, the
interview was set up. Right place at the right time I guess?
The next night, I did the interview, and asked if I could record sound
check for cutaways, and he agreed. In the middle of sound check, he stops
the band and says to me, "You know, it seems like the really spontaneous
moments happen during the show. Do you have enough time to tape the
concert?" Well, twist my arm. So we took a direct feed off the sound board
into my camera with Digital sound. The set was:
		1. Still Water
		2. Brother LA
		3. Pour Ton Sourje (I don't know if this song is released anywhere?)
		4. May This Be Love (Hendrix tune. Emmy Lou does it on Wrecking Ball, but this live version w/ Daniel blows it away!!!)
		5. Hard Rain (quote, "I've had the opportunity to work with a couple of great people, one of them is Bob Dylan. Here's to ya Bob!")
		6. Where Will I Be (Again on the Emmy Lou album. I like Daniel's version better.)
		7. Marie Claire (Electric version with very jazzy drums)
		8. Jolie Louise
		9. Ice
		10. Indian Red
		11. Blindness (U2)
		12. The Maker
		13. Cannan (Traditional spiritual sung a capella with a tambourine)
		14. Golden Dream (Instrumental "lullaby")
		15. The Weight (The Band)
		16. Everyday People (Sly and the Family Stone)

Well I have this music, and listen to it all the time while I'm working. I
have Still Water, and this recording is 100 X better! I feel guilty being
the only one to have a copy when I know there are a lot of Lanois fans out
there.

My question is: is there a way to distribute this that is not against the
law, and I won't get in trouble for?

I would appreciate any answers =)

rupshaw222@aol.com

P.S. After the show, Daniel and I were both loading our gear at about the
same time, and he saw my rather attractive, single blonde production
assistant and promptly invited us on to their tour bus for a few bottles of
wine with the band. It was quite an evening for me! I also came away with
his hand written set list, and an autograph on my '65 Vox guitar =)

[NOTE FROM THE EDITOR:

I have debated with myself on whether or not to include this message. I
made DL's management aware of the above message and asked for some
feedback. It has been several weeks and I still haven't heard back on this
topic. I am a librarian by trade and censorship is something that I do not
want to be a part of. However, we have laws to follow and we hopefully
also have some personal respect for the artist's work. I believe these things
should be our guide on this topic.

Please refrain from allowing this group to digress into a bootleg discussion;
I am sure many of us have heard both sides of the argument and we all
have our own opinions. This group is to discuss the music and the work of
Daniel Lanois, not whether or not it is legal and/or ethical to distribute his
music without his consent.

These are my opinions and my wishes. Since I am the Editor of ACADIE,
I can choose what is, and what is not included, in each Newsletter.
Therefore, we will have one Digest in which people can respond to this
message, and then it get's buried.

And, I can change my mind. :-) Thanks for your indulgence.

		Kenley

Subject: 'Cool Water' and 'Rocky World'

I think my attached mail was one of those that got bombed by your hard
disk crash, so here it is again.
In response to a no. of subscribers ongoing queries about availability of
above, I got the 'Cool Water' CD through KTS Records of Italy. They have a web
site at http://www.kts.it.80 which lists their catalogue and allows on-line
ordering by credit card. Not knowing their reliability I got an international
money order and posted my order; the CD arrived within 10 days.

I saw 'Rocky World' on the shelves of Tower Records in Dublin, Ireland, where I
am from, over Christmas '96. Tower are a chain store and are certainly all
over Britain if not elsewhere, so it might be available thru them. However,
it may be thru it's Irish connection ( Directed/Produced by Philip King of
'Bringin' it all back home' and the group Scullion fame ) that has it available
in Dublin. Obviously Lanois material would be popular in Ireland as a result
of his work with U2 and Emmylou Harris. BTW Emmylou plays here in early
February ( sans Lanois, pity ) and Steve Earle in early March; can't wait on
both counts.

On a personal note, I look forward to the 'Acadie' newsletter weekly, as it
gives some good snippets and info on Lanois' current endeavours. However, I
sometimes wonder whether it's an interest group or a love-in. Whilst I'd be
the first to agree that the man's work is remarkable, I'd say he takes the
occasional pee just like the rest of us. The last thing I want to read is
that we're going to make a collective quilt and send it to him! Please
excuse the cynic in me.

This my first time writing to this illustrious rag. Just saw Sling Blade and I was
blown away. I have had the CD for a while (I got an early release promo), and
frankly, although I enjoyed it, it is in no way a substitute for a full-fledged D.L.
record. However, the music as it works within the film is fantastic. Probably one of
the most perfectly toned and sensitive soundtracks I've heard in a long time. My
wife and I talked about the film for a long time afterwards, and both of us were near
tears thinking about it. Great movie! (Other must sees --- "Secrets and Lies" and
"Lone Star") I've seen Daniel twice in concert, once supporting Wynona and the
other with Emmylou. The first show was by far the best concert I have ever been to.
He had the big white ball on stage with film projections, and quad sound, with Brian
Blade and Daryl Johnson slamming! Amazing. I've got Cool Water, but there needs
to be a live thing with the trio. Any bootlegs out there? I recently brought out my
second CD and if anyone is interested check out my website -

hi all-

the melody of bruce springsteen's 'dry lightning' (from 'ghost of tom
joad) strongly resembles that of emmylou's lanois-penned 'blackhawk.' i
think the latter's a much more evocative song, but 'ghost...' is a good
album, with a rich, spacious sound.

do dan and bruce admire each other's work?

also, i heard a fleeting report months ago about dan recording in
mexico. true?

think that a lanois colaboration with bruce would be great. lanois says
there have been talks but that bruce has not invited him yet

Hi,

I've been a fan since 1983 when I first got hold of Eno's Apollo
Atmospheres & Soundtracks album. Still one of my favourite Eno albums, not
least because of the prominence of DL's guitar work.

Anyway, I'm new here, so please excuse me if my question has been asked and
answered in this forum in the past.

In 1989 at Wembley Stadium in England, there was a tribute concert to
Nelson Mandela. This concert was 'stage directed' by DL himself and he
appeared on stage with the Neville Brothers and others.

He performed two of his own songs, one was 'The Maker', and the other was a
very beautiful instrumental track. According to the commentator on the day
it was called Golden Dream and was, also according to the commentator, on
Acadie. Not strictly speaking true. I have searched high and low for this
track; does it exist on CD? What is it really called? When I moved from the
UK to Holland I had to leave all my videos behind and I'm starting to get
really desperate!

Hoping to hear from somebody

Hello,

Wondering if anyone knew if Daniel Lanois was going to be appearing at the Tibetan New Years concert again this year 2/17 (I think) @ Carnegie Hall in New York?

Kenley:

Thank you so much for your extra effort in sending all of us our very own
copy of #57. Talk about service!!

WGBH, a PBS here in Boston, aired THE MAKING OF THE WRECKING BALL back in
December. It's a must see for all DL, ELH and Neil Young fans. It's a
beautifully filmed musical odyssey which shows how intricate the web of
musical production can be. And it gives you a better understanding of how
the atmosphere within a studio influences the recordings produced there. I
have personally been to Kingsway and I think that MAKING OF THE WRECKING BALL
accurately captures and portrays the studio's spirit and ambiance. I hope
that everyone will have the opportunity to view this wonderful program!!!

Subject: UK Fans?

Hi from England
I am relatively new to this newsgroup and an ardent admirer of DL obviously. Just wondering how many of the members of this group are from here in the UK (maybe Kenley can help on this?).

After visiting a Canadian friend a couple of years ago he "introduced"us
to Lanois - although without realising it we were already big on his
sound/music - U2, PG, Dylan etc. We visited Quebec again last year (whale
watching) and heve just organised flights for this year to Nova
Scotia/New Brunswick to tour around. We are hoping to check out all
things "Acadian" in the area and maybe get the feel of his emotions
behind his writings? - as well as catch a few humpbacks/fin/right whales
of course!
Finally, if anyone out there knows of Lanois appearing anywhere within
that area in August 97 PLEASE let me know!!! If Daniel is reading this -
how about putting on a small show on Prince Edward Island or Cape Breton
or Gaspe and bring along a few friends (Bob maybe!!) ??????
Yours hopefully!

Hi there, I'm a recent new subsciber. Just picked up guitar this year.
Trying to figure out some tunes from Acadia (Under the stormy sky is
pretty basic but I haven't gotten much farther than that) or Wrecking
Ball. I understand alot of the songs use alternate tunings - nothing in
print that I know of. Any advice? TS in Boston
