Subject: The latest on Daniel & answers to some inquiries

Here is some brief answers to readers inquires:

There are no current plans for Daniel to play Jazz Fest this year. Although
I expect he will be in town and perhaps could spontaneously show up
at someone's gig. At present he is on hiatus from the 2nd phase of working
with Bob Dylan down in Miami during the month of January.

Daniel's record company, Warner Bros. Records, have generously decided to
discontinue distribution of Rocky World, the documentary film. It is the
regular story, no sales, no more video. Argh. Gee if only they had decided
to actually distribute, stock, and promote this so that people could find it
we might actually experience some sales. So, for those of you who have it
you are lucky, and for those of you that find old copies - you're even
luckier. If you would like to voice your opinion you can write to Charlie
Springer at Warner Bros. Records 3300 Warner Blvd, Burbank CA 91505.

With regards to G. Oryema Daniel produced only one song entitled LPJ
Christine on this album (Night to Night) released on Realworld which I
believe is distributed through Virgin/Caroline.

To Andy Wolage, that instrumental song of Daniel's you refer to from the
Nelson Mandela Concert was in fact 'Golden Dream'. Daniel wrote this
with Syd Straw (she the lyrics, he the music) and it appears on her last
record, not the latest.

Tim Gibbons is a Hamiltonian friend of Daniel's who is in search of a label
home. He has not released any other material, "Lonely One" on the Sling
Blade soundtrack is his first.

Daniel will not be playing at Carnegie Hall 2/17 as part of the Tibetan New
Years Concert this year.

Let's hope this digest-site does not become a means for
undermining the integrity of the artist whose work we joyfully
celebrate. I am a fan of Lanois' work; I do not want to alienate or
steal from him. Bootlegging is a form of theft that we are right to steer
clear of. I would love to hear Rupshaw's recordings - but
not without Daniel's permission. If that is not forthcoming, you're
a very lucky person Rupshaw; but keep them to yourself.

Hello all! To all the guitarists/musicians out there: what is the tuning on
the Cool Water CD? I believe he keeps the same tuning but changes key via
capo. Anybody close to figuring them out?

I have been seeing many posts looking for Tab of Lanois material.
Is there a specific song or group of songs or licks that would be of
general interest. Working out his guitar playing isn't especially hard, but
determining the tunings isn't always that easy. It's not impossible to
transcribe most of it into standard tuning, but playing it might prove more
challenging.
Seeing Dan play live was very informative. Nothing he plays demands
great dexterity or reach just good feel and touch. Please post suggestions
or send them directly to me and I will start with whatever seems most
popular. I transcribed an exerpt of White Mustang II and posted it here
many, many issues ago. It was close but not exact, I believe the tuning was
correct. I'll try anything.

Dear Kenley,

I couldn't believe my eyes when I found this amazing Lanois Fan Club on the Net!

Great work, Splendid efforts all round. I am proud to be a subscriber.

I play guitar and nearly sing and have been in a few bands over the years. I
still enjoy
recording at home and really got into Dan when I was given the ACADIE LP
(vinyl type)
by my Brother-in-Law who was working with RCA Records at the time. The LP
had a "Not For Sale"
sticker on it, and was for "Promotion Only" or sothething similar, anyway,
my B-I-L tastes are
obviously in his bum, because since the first time the needle hit the vinyl,
I was OBSESSED!!

I couldn't stop playing ACADIE.. I learnt to play a few eg. St Annes Gold -
F Tuning!

F - F - C - F - A -F ... as revealed by Dan in a "Guitar Player" magazine
article..

One of my guitars is permanently tuned to this and is fabulous for ad-lib
and jamming.

Same tuning 12 Bar Blues style also works for "UNDER A STORMY SKY"

Also for Chris Whiteley's "Poison Girl" - GO FOR IT!!

At the peak of my obsession, imagine how I felt when looking at the upcoming
TV progs, there
it was! A special on DL .. being the "Rocky World" Video. I went nuts!

Now this on the NET!! - Anyway I'm probably just raving now...

Nice to know there's more than one DL nut like me around '' ha ha...

See You and Thanks again for all the gos

REN :)

Subject: Upcoming albums...

Okay, I'm *extremely* bummed out that I've decided I can't afford U2
tickets... :) But anyway, here's some stuff to look forward to in the coming
weeks:

*Next Tuesday, February 18th - Chris Whitley's 'Terra Incognita' CD - it's
going to be an "ECD" - includes CD-ROM info, videos, etc...
He's also appearing on Letterman on March 19!

*February 25 - Michael Brook's soundtrack to the movie 'Albino Alligator'

*March 4 - Geoffrey Oryema's "Night To Night" - Rumor hazzit that Dan did
some work on this album - I for one couldn't be more excited, not only by
the fact that Dan worked on it, but that it is FINALLY being released
 in the U.S...

Hopefully these dates won't change, but as you know, it's very possible...

Happy Richie Valenstine Day - :) - Ant

Also - for those interested:

Tchad Blake (Froom cohort & producer/engineer extraordinaire) has an
interesting site up with info on his recording techniques and complete
album list - some very nifty stuff! Links to all of his work at the Real
World Studios, etc...

The address is:

http://home.earthlink.net/~smithhouse/binaural/index.html

P.S. New Music Suggestion - Big Head Todd & The Monsters' new CD
"Beautiful World" - Produced by Jerry Harrison from Talking Heads. Great,
great album - I remember a few people on the list liked them - this is
probably the best album yet!
