Hi there to all of you on Acadie,
(Do you use the word Acadiens? Nevermind, I'll catch up on digests and
find out later :)

I'd just like to introduce myself to everybody and say I'm glad I found
this mailing list! My name is Nicole Haddock, I'm from Boston, but I'm
in school in Pennsylvania right now. I first heard of Daniel Lanois
through his producing efforts - U2 and Gabriel - but after I got his CD
Acadie I fell in love with his music. After bopping around on the
internet, I was annoyed to find out Danny has been to Boston a few times
and that I've missed him. I think it would have been great to see him live!
I've spoken French for awhile and I spend some of my time trying to
figure out what he's saying! (I know - they're on the site, but I like to
translate them myself :)

Anyway, after reading the past few digests from the web site, I am
curious about the stand on bootlegs here. It seems to be pretty negative
here, but on the other mailing lists I'm on (U2, Bruce Springsteen) the
attitude is not the same. I'm just wondering if there's a reason for this
(ie - did Lanois say something about the recordings?) or if that's the
general atmosphere?

Alright, I've got to study now, but I'll talk with you all next Sunday
I'm sure!

Nicole

Hello all,
I just thought I'd let everyone know that there is a Daniel Lanois interview
in the April issue of Guitar Player magazine. It's mainly about his movie
soundtrack for Slingblade and his new studio. Check it out it should be just
arriving in the stores.

For those in the Boston area:

As of Sunday, 23 February, there was a copy of _Cool Water_
at the used music store "CD Spins" on Newbury Street--can't
remember the price.

I also saw the single for "Lotta Love To Give" with the
seven-minute interview on it, for those interested. Same
store, again i can't remember the price.

Best of luck!

Pete K.

Hi everyone,
What a pleasure it is to find a digest devoted to Daniel Lanois. A couple
years back I saw him at the Kumbaya Festival in Toronto, but I didn't know
any of his solo work then. A pity too, 'cause I saw him backstage; if I
had known as much about him then as I do now I might have gone over + said
hello. ;)
Enough of that...will some kind soul help me with my collection? The Rocky
World video, for instance--I asked a local record store to order it for me.
If that doesn't work is there another way I can get it? And someone some
time back mentioned an interview CD--would that someone still be interested
in copying it?
Angela

Greetings: Everyone,

I just that I might share some of my Lanois
knowledge. I have had the opportunity to meet Mr. Lanois
on a couple of occasions. The first meeting was outside
the Juno's in Toronto 1994. We chatted about various
things, mainly my university (U of Western, Ontario) as he
seemed to keep directing the conversation that way.
Anyway, I was lucky enough to get my Rocky world, Acadie
and TBO Wynnona autographed. The next time I met him was
July 1994 at Grossman's Tavern, Toronto. That night he
played a set with the Downchild Blues Band which concluded
with a version of Oh Marie. Somebody in this newsletter
asked about the song 'Need Somebody'. I asked Daniel once
if this recording existed. I can faintly remember him
saying that it won't be released and that the tape is
sitting in New Orleans. Oddly enough, I saw him perform
the next year opening up for the Tragically Hip. During
this set he played a song called "The streets of Toronto".
This song was identical in melody and chord progression to
'Need Somebody'. He said that he just wrote the song the
day before so my hunch is that he just wrote new lyrics to
old music. This show was also one of the sickest ones I've
seen as 20,000 drunken idiots decided to throw bottles at
Lanois while he was performing.
Also, I recall somebody writing about a CBC
"Adrien Clarkson Presents" special on Daniel. I did see
this and thought it was brilliant. I can remember Daniel
sitting in a tent saying that he always wanted his own tent
and now he's recording in one. I thought that these Mexico
sessions sounded great. I just want to know why this new
album hasn't been released. Am I missing something? What
is with the record label? I would also like to take the
time to promote some other Canadian producers that we may
call Lanois prodigies. Malcolm Burn.....whose work includes
The Neville Brothers (Brother Blood), Iggy Pop, The Devlins
(Drift-Thanx to Lanois), Chris Whitley(You all know this),
and Charlie Sexton (Under the Wishing Well - Close attempt
at the master). Finally, for those who are not aware,
Pierre Marchand who helped with Acadie is a huge part of
the Sarah Mclachlan sound. I've only seen 5 issues but
haven't seen the afformentioned names so I thought they
should deserve some credit. I know that I've got more to
say but I think I've typed enough. Later.
