Appologies to Kenley for dragging this out yet another week, hopefully this
will offer some closure.

I believe that all this talk began some weeks or months ago when someone
wrote in saying that they had taped one of Daniel's soundchecks, and then
the hand-wringing over bootlegs ensued. I stated immediately that I am a
big fan of tapetrading and support it whole-heartedly (NOT the same thing as
bootlegs, BTW), and inquired if there was any possibility of 'treeing' the
aforementioned tape. Rather than anybody approaching Daniel's organization
about how he felt on this issue, the ages old 'what constitutes
bootlegging?' debate has ensued, which doesn't resolve the issue of how
Daniel feels about it. All those opposed have said that if the artist says
it's OK, than it's OK. (As if those of us who are into tapetrading do it if
the artist says it's *not* OK!). So who's going to find out? I never put
the suggestion out for philosophical ramblings on anybody's part, I wanted
to see if anybody could actually find out Daniel's position so the material
that some people on this list posess could be distributed (or not).

So, anybody have an answer?

Dying to hear Daniel live,
Michael

In the April '97 issue of Guitar Player, there is an article by Joe
Gore about Daniel Lanois, which says:

After stints operating out of New Orleans and San Francisco,
the stellar producer ... [has] set up shop in a former Hispanic porn
theater in a beach town north of Los Angeles.

The article mentions that Lanois was about to leave for Miami to start
working on the new Dylan album.

In response to Éric McComber:

The song you are looking for is not available on any Crash Vegas album.
It is a song which they had been performing live for years but could
never set down in the studio. At least they couldn`t record a version
that they were pleased with.
I have to agree with you that it was by far their best song. It was a
long, meandering and turbulent voyage of a song which was always
mesmerizing to experience.
It`s too bad they broke up last summer. Truly a special band.

In Lasts weeks Issue Martin Lacasse mentions Quebecers lack of knowledge of Lanois. I live in Asia and my first introduction to Lanois was from friends who run the community radio station in the Gaspesie
area.As for me I am always out of touch with popular culture and music coming out of North America. The whole grunge period was pretty quite until Kurt Cobain killed himself. Everytime I go back to America I feel like I've been in a time warp, and I work in the music industry. Which leads me to ask if Daniel Lanois Emmy Lou ect. have any intention of visiting Asia in the near future.I realy enjoy my weekly digest
am looking forward to the summer when I'll be in NewYork I hope I can see the movie Slingblade, which I would not known about if not for this digest.

Thanks

Eric Terpening asked for interviews to check out. That's a
very good idea I think! It would be nice if everyone that
knew of any good intervews could send a letter to this mailing
list. Then it would be easy to find the magazine in question at the
library.
I know one good for all the international readers: Music Technology
october 1987 (Yello is on the cover page). He talks here about production
techniques (a lot of the Joshua Tree) and programming of the DX7(!)

Hello,

I have seen Daniel Lanois on concert in Paris a few years ago and was
amazed by a strange instrument he was playing. It makes a reall yweird
sound, it is electronic and amplified, its shape is ovale and a little
bigger than a dish. It is played as if fingers were passed on a
photocell or something and have several buttons on it to change sounds.
Unforntunately, I have no idea how it is called and you might know what
it is... I have been looking for that instrument for such a long time. I
hope you will be able to help me in my search.

Thank you,

Cedric Mnich

This message is in response to Eric's question about Crash Vegas' second
album. The song "Avalanche" is not actually on there and the album in
general has more of a country feel (with an edge) than eerie.

Even though I haven't had much time to respond (due to AOL access
difficulties), I'd appreciate if you'd continue sending to me.

I discovered Daniel Lanois back in October '96 on CPTV (Connecticut Public
Television), programming dedicated to the arts. I was shocked that such an
artist existed that I had never come across prior. Since I only caught the
last 20 minutes or so of the program, I'm not exactly sure of the name. I
think it was the Rocky World video you've spoken of regularly. (Please
confirm).

In any case, this incredibly beautiful, resonating music has made an
indellible impression on me.

I don't know all that much about Daniel Lanois though, unfortunately. What
is his affiliation with Ireland? Does he live there or did he just film the
video there? Any history on him would be appreciated. Also, any upcoming
concerts in the CT/NY area?

I am not a musician (although I dabbled in my youth) but a lover of beautiful
music. I've found some of the conversation here to be very technical and
musician oriented.
Let's get more expressive.

I can't get enough of Acadie........................

Thanks.

Subject: Lanois, The Devlins...What's the Connection?

Hello... being new to the ACADIE experience, I feel the need to say I
love Lanois' music, in any form it may exist (i.e. solo, production,
collaborations with other artists, etc.). I am super EXCITED about the
Dylan/Lanois effort, which I heard of on this newsletter, and can't
wait to hear it. However, also being a fan of The Devlins, I find Mr.
Lanois mentioned in various places with this fine band. The Devlins
are mentioned in the liner notes of For The Beauty Of Wynona, and their
drummer Sean Deavitt is responsible for the drum loop on the title
track. Likewise, Lanois is thanked in the liner notes for The Devlins
debut effort Drift. I don't know, however, what the connection is
besides this. Did the Devlins record in Lanois' studio? Are they
friends with Lanois? Is the connection, perhaps, Malcolm Burn, who
produced The Devlins' first record? Lanois does not play on Drift, but
perhaps he was a creative force present for the entire record, offering
pointers, etc.? Any information would be more than I have, so it would
be greatly appreciated.

Incidentally, The Devlins' sophomore effort, When the Real Rain Comes,
has been expected since January, with Nettweb's website
(http://www.nettweb.com) still displaying that when the album comes
out, they will have a full spread for it. E-mails to the Nettwerk
staff have been answered by stating that the boys have been relieved of
their Capitol Records contract, and are fishing for a new one. The new
record was produced by Pierre Marchand (whose music I also love, but
wondering if Lanois was present at the recordings), and I cannot stand
the lack of information on their status and the record's. Does anyone
out there know the deal on this? PLEASE post to the newsletter if you
do, or feel free to e-mail me directly. The Devlins' club date at the
Viper Room in L.A. was also interrupted by a bomb threat I hear, but
cannot confirm. If anyone has ANY INFO on The Devlins, please post to
the newsletter. Thanks.
