Subject: An Update

Here is the official word from Daniel regarding the recent bootleg
offering (now that he has had a chance to listen to the recording).
"The tape recording of the Seattle show is fine, but it was
never intended to be a recording; it was intended to be a live show.
He is on to new things now; new songs and sounds and would
be very disappointed if this were distributed since it was not intended
to be anything more than a show . He does not want this tape shared
with anyone."

Now for the Good News, we can expect some participation from
Daniel in the near future and hopefully he will have a new release
out by year's end!

re: instrument
I believe that is the Omnichord. Daniel uses it extensivly on the song
"Somewhere Down The Crazy River" on Robbie Robertsons self-titled
release. It has a wild sound to it.

re: Porn Theatre
Guessing at this one, but I think it is located in the city of Oxnard. I
don't live too far away from there - I guess I will have to make a
pilgrimage to check it out. I also believe that mark howard uses that
facility frequently, too.

Subject: Musicians in Orlando area?

Fellow ACADIE readers,
I recently moved to Orlando, Florida and was wondering if any members
in our group lived nearby who were musicians and might be interested in
jamming/collaboration/whatever with another musician who loves Lanois'
music. I play drums and guitar and sing (10 years or more on each) and can
"get by" on many other instuments. If anyone is interested please email me
so we can get together. My email address is: phasmoid@mindspring.com
(yes, it's a long story).
Hope to talk to you soon,
                                                Matt Taylor

Someone please help me find the Daniel Lanois video! I can't get it
anywhere here! If you know of a place it is available I will send you
money to buy it for me.
Also someone recently said Emmylou Harris was featured on the LJ album. LJ
= Luscious Jackson? Which track(s) is she on? I'd like to hear that but
the copy of the album at my college station doesn't list track info.

To those interested in the tribulations of th acadian people,
there is an awesome novel called Pélagie La Charette, written
by acadian Antonine Maillet. I believe it is widely distributed
as it has won several internationnal awards.

It is about the Grand Dérangement (The Great Disturbance), wich
is how they call the exodus that was forced upon them by the british.
The irony is, their new settlement in Louisianne was then sold by the
French the the US for a wharehouse clearing price of one million dollars.
Ha well, we know who had the business sense to start with.

There are still millions of acadiens in the maritimes, along with
bréyons and other small entities all rooting back to the Nouvelle
France Colonies. These are among the finest people to walk the earth.

Part of the Devlins first album was recorded in Daniel's studio. This
may be why he received a 'thank you' in the liner notes.

Subject: Daniel Lanois Screen Saver for Windows

Notice:

This note is to let everyone know that two new screen savers
for windows have been developed featuring Daniel Lanois'
Music and they are comming very soon!

The screen savers feature the same visuals (images connected
with the music to form a mood) but different music.

The two screensavers available feature music from Slingblade
and The Neville Bros. Record, "Yellow Moon." Both are FREE.

These screensavers feature music both written and produced
by Lanois. They also feature the many sided inflection and
sensitivity to mood an artist like Lanois can create. I suggest
you download both screensavers to see for yourself.

The screensavers will be available shortly. I will post the URL
where they will be as soon as they are ready for downloading
(approx. two weeks from this date: 4/8/97) They are large
(3 or more meg) files. 28.8 modem or higher are recommended
for fastest download. Once posted they will only remain up on
the site for three weeks before being taken down due to server space.

These screensavers were to created to promote awareness to an
audience who enjoys discreet music like Lanois and Co. create.
They were not created to exploit the artist or to be used as a means
of bootleg distribution of songs. They contain looped samples of
songs not entire songs. The developer will make NO PROFIT off
of these items. They are a gift to the giver.

Please feel free to email me at with questions and concerns
regaurding the above.

I was at my girlfriend´s a couple of days ago, listening to old Elvis
albums, when I heard this song, "Crawfish", for the first time (it´s on the
King Creole album). check out your parents record collection for a copy and
listen to the groove of crawfish (the bass track is exceptionally mean).

Greetings,

The LA Times reported in the Calendar section today that Lanois would be
performing material from "Sling Blade" on the Third Street Promenade in
Santa Monica tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. The article claims he will be
joined by Emmylou Harris and Tim Gibbons. Sounds like a blast -- and I
for one, am already planning on bailing from work a little early to
check it out!

sincerely,

I just wanted to let you know that I've been a fan of Daniel Lanois for
years. I listened to U2 during my youth and didn't realize the talent behind
some of their music.

ACADIE is my favorite album, hands down! I cannot put into words the
emotions that I feel for this album. I recently saw Sling Blade and was
thrilled that Lanois had a major part in this production.

Anyway, I'm just another fan who wanted to express my appreciation.

Sincerely,

Sabine Wasson

DL was appearing on the radio yesterday in town on one of our local NPR
stations with Emmylou and Tim doing music from Slingblade, but I was at
work and missed the whole thing. Then I heard that they were doing an in-
store in Santa Monica at 5 in the afternoon, so my wife and I decided to brave
the LA rush hour traffic to try and catch them playing. Of course by the time
we got there the place was packed with people and the crowd was spilling
out the door. We couldn't see a thing, but we could just hear Emmylou's
voice in the distance and a bit of DL's guitar. So we went shopping! We
came back when the show had ended (at 7) and Dl and Emmylou were
hanging out in the back of the store still, so I went up to Daniel and said "hi"
and shook his hand. Big thrill. I asked him if he was aware of
this little online congregation of ours and he said yes and that he and his
assistant were thinking of becoming more involved. Wasn't anyone else
there?

HEy fellow Acadiens! I am a Canadian transplant originally from Quebec
who is living in Atlanta. I am currently music editor of an on-line magazine
called Rough Cut On-Line at www.roughcut.com.

I had the pleasure of talking to Daniel Lanois briefly over the phone a couple
of weeks ago. I was terribly excited 'cause he's a hero of mine. I am a U2
freak, a Gabriel freak and I love his solo stuff.

For Rough Cut, I was interviewing him about the awesome Sling Blade
soundtrack. That appears in this week's edition which posts Friday, April
11 as well as my review of the soundtrack. Hope you like it!

For your eyes only, below is a little more of the conversation!

Feel free to contact me if you want to talk tunes!!!!

Cheers,

Danny Boy Interview:

How do you feel about rock music today with electronica creeping into the
mainstream? You have always embraced technology but you come out with
a finished product that's more organic or soulful. And there's really a lot of
almost computer music coming into the mainstream and I wonder what you
think about that.

Well, you know, I've been listening to computer music and been inspired by
it for a long time. As a kid I used to listen to Kraftwerk, this German band.
Totally all computers and machines. And, ultimately if you have a musical
and organic result, then the tools can be whatever they need to be. I've heard
really great organic results out of nothing but machines. Then, on the other
end of the spectrum, you might also be touched by someone playing the
banjo on the front porch. I welcome all the tools and not everybody works
with the same tools and you just have to be a believer and an expert with the
tools you choose to work with. Be it a rusty old nail on a Dobro or a great
computer sequencing system...which I use, by the way. For example, on the
Luscious Jackson record that I did last year. We pulled out the boxes on
about half the record.

I know you have a studio in New Orleans. How much time do you spend
down there these days?

I was in New Orleans quite a bit late 80s, early 90s and not so much now but
I still have the studio there and it's a fantastic place (chuckle). Old, old
mansion, you know, great place, you'd love it. But I have a place in Jamaica
now and it doesn't have a studio in it- thank God (laugh) so that's where I
spend some of my personal time now.

Well, some of your music on on For the Beaty of Wynona has a Cajun flavor
to it and I guess Indian Red directly has Cajun influence. Do you find
Carribbean sounds coming into your music?

I would welcome Carribbean sounds. Let's just say that they've had some of
the best bottom end on any record- any record- so if I can get that kind of
bass on some of my records then I'll accept the inspiration (chuckles).

On a personal note, I was wondering what inspired the song Beatrice. It's
one of my favorite songs of yours.

Beatrice, I wrote it for Beatrice Dalle (?) who is an actress, a French actress,
and she's in that film Betty Bloom (?) if you ever saw that. So I've always
been a secret admirer of Beatrice Dalle. Now the song is really, it's a song
from the point of view of myself and Beatrice Dalle hanging out on a balcony
in L.A. the night of the riots, you know, the L.A. riots. I guess that's going
back four or five years. It was just my way of commenting on that event, that
riot.

I know you're working with Bob Dillon right now. Is it in the mastering
stage?

What are you doing in L.A.?

I've come here for other reasons. We've been making the record in Miami
and it's not at the mastering stage. It's about three quarters of the way there.
Bob's touring right now so when he gets back we're going to have a
reassessment and see what touch ups we need and that will be that.

Are you at liberty to talk about some people you may be working with in the
near future?

Actually, I'm taking a bit of a breather after Bob Dillon although I have a
commitment hanging in the air with the Rolling Stones.

I was also wondering what you think of the new U2 album?

I heard it a couple of months back and I thought it was great. I heard a few
tracks that really inspired me and some guitar playing that made me jealous-
Edge, the bastard! Ah, he's done it again!

Well I've read that the Edge is pretty impressed with you're playing. Are you
self taught? Because you have a very loose feel to your guitar playing that
seems like it could be something you just created in your bedroom as a kid.

My current sound is pretty much something I've come up with but I've been
inspired by some pretty great players along the way, you know, Jimmy
Hendrix, Neil Young...and those are probably the best teachers, ultimately,
the records that you love...Albert King. I'm a real fan of great tone. I think
you can say an awful lot with tone. You can play two notes with great tone
and it's better than 200 notes with a nasty tone.

But as a little kid I studied music formally. I started taking music lessons
when I was 10 and continued until I was 21. I played in pit orchestras and
studied how to read music and all that stuff. I can't say that I use much of
that now but I'm sure it was a good education.

I found the other day that of about 70 Cds I have from the last few years that
you have, seven of them are produced by you. U2 albums, Robbie Robertson,
the two by Peter Gabriel. Is it hard not to have a close relationship with
these artists after you've worked so long in the studio together?

I don't keep in touch with them all that much because everybody's busy. But
of course I feel kind of close to those people. Living under the same roof for
months on end and sharing all that time and creativity. I think when you've
worked together with people at an intense level like that it stays with you for
a lifetime, you know? It's like when you've been in love, you never forget.

He was then off on his motorcycle to do God knows what....

hello acadie!

i just wanted to comment about local h on the sling blade soundtrack. i
read this week that some one saw daniel on e! and he said it wasn't supposed to be there. i bought the soundtrack about 2 weeks before i saw the
movie this week (seeing lanois on the cd was enough for me) so i noticed
local h wasn't in the movie and thought that was strange. i'd first like to say
thank you for the explanation, but second that i really like the song. i've
never heard of local h and have no idea why they would be on the cd, but it
introduced me to some one new. i don't know if i'm the minority on this one
or not. i also read that most of the people that get this letter are
musicians which makes sense to me; has anyone else noticed how many more musicians seem to like lanois than regular types do? i know nothing
about music except for what i like, but i think if we had more musicians in the world maybe we could get another solo album out of him.

Perhaps someone can enlighten me - two of Daniel's songs on Emmylou's
`Wrecking Ball' have me intrigued. In `Where Will I Be?' she sings -
`Met an Indian boy, In Ottawa he laid me down on a bed of straw ...
Yeah I like the heat of your body laying under me'.
Similarly, in the song `Blackhawk' she sings about working in a
bookstore while the male subject/`he' works in a steel mill and how
they meet in a field where `we fell down to our knees ... love
hunters in the night ... we were Blackhawk and the White Winged
Dove'.
Have these cosy encounters been re-genderised to provide a heterosexual
context for Emmylou or are they Daniel's original words?
Were either of these songs written specifically for Emmylou?
Just curious.
