I found it interesting to note that the soundtrack to "Dune", the David
Lynch film based on the book by Frank Herbert is a collaboration between
Lanois and Eno.

This place is hoppin' and it sure feels nice to be here among the Lanoisie.
I just found a copy of the Harold Budd/Eno with DL recording of the Pearl.
There are no credits. Does anyone have more info about this 1984 effort?
Obviously DL was doing more than producing on this one and I'd like to know
what. Of course is Daniel would like to answer this one, I'd just pop a
wheelie.

Portland Maine remembers you Daniel. Thanks.

Hello there!!

First let me say, many thanks to Kenley for keeping this interesting
mailing list. I'm a relatively new Lanois follower, but I'm smitten. His
music was introduced to me by a Quebecer musician (bless his heart.) I'm an
arts journalist in Buffalo, New York, and I'm wondering if Daniel ever
works at his Grant Avenue Studios in Hamilton, Ontario, about 30 minutes
away from me. I would LOVE to interview him if he's ever in town. Hell, I'd
love to interview him on the phone...by e-mail....smoke
signals....whatever! If someone can give me his publicist's number, (like
the Roughcut writer, excellent excerpt...thank you!) or whatever contact is
appropriate, I'd be much obliged.

Thank you,

Natalie

Hi guys,

I usually don't contribute to these kinds of mailing lists. I'm content
with gluttonously devouring info. However, when I heard a cry for help, I
felt an obligation to do what I could. If anyone is still having trouble
locating the Sling Blade soundtrack, it is a available on Island records, a
sub-label of Polygram. The call number is 314-524-388-2. If you walk into
any record store with that information, they should easily be able to get
their hands on it. I'm certain it's available domestically (in Canada).
Can you tell I work at a record store?

Anyway, I am also interested in any information concerning an upcoming
Lanois album.

Lastly, I was very pleased to see a significant French-Canadian
representation on the list. I spent 6 weeks last summer in Quebec
attempting to improve my French and I totally fell in love with the place.
I just read La Guerre, Yes Sir by Roch Carrier. If anyone knows of any
other traditional (or contemporary) French-Canadian literature, I would
love some recommendations.

Thanks,
	Teresa

Subject: M.A.P. benefit event 4/11/97

Here is a review of the M.A.P. benefit event that was just held on 4/11/97
at Billboard Live. It's not entirely Daniel Lanois related (please note
that Steve Earle sang "Goodbye") but I thought it might be of interest to
this group. Also, I would have sworn I saw Brian Eno and I would have
sworn that one of the members of the opening band said he can see Brian Eno from where he was sitting but what do I know?!?

For those of you not familiar with what M.A.P. is, it stands for Musicians
Alliance Program (i think!).

The first performer (besides the opening band) was Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill. She reminded me of Sinead O'Conner in that she has much emotional depth in her screams but her songs are not as strong.

Next was the Art guy from Everclear. I'm not familiar with their songs but
he seems to write fairly positive songs with that "alternative" sound from
the NorthWest.

Then it was John Doe and his popish songs which picked things up a bit.
He's genial and I think started to get the crowd to relax a bit. His set
was good.

And then Peter Case followed. The first couple of songs really interested
me but by the time the third song came on followed by Case's desire to
crank up the guitar to drown the noise from the bar, he was rollicking and
I started to get emotionally involved. By the time the fourth song was
played, I knew I was going to go out and get his CDs the next day. He was
completely awesome. Those of you not familiar with Case, his songs have
the folk-country vein of Dave Alvin but even rougher. Case was the true
secret of the night.

And the final performance was none other than Steve Earle. I was shocked
by how most of the people there turned out to be Earle fans. He began the
night by playing two new songs, one with Woody Gutherie and the other is a
witty song. Then he proceeded with Southside Blues, CCKMP, More Than I
Can Do, Valentine's Day, Now She's Gone, Goodbye (sorry if songs aren't in
the correct order) and ended with a beautiful sing-along with I Ain't Ever
Satisfied. I almost cried because it was so beautiful having everyone sing
along and because it's one of my personal favorites. Then Earle was the
only performer cheered on for an encore.

This was my first Earle concert and it will not be my last. It was a
totally unforgettable event as I was standing in the front row and had such
a good view of the man. What I was most amazed with was how clearly he
sang and how relaxed and how in command of the audience he is. He was also the one that solidified the entire night as his songs rang so true and
meaningful.

Subject: Re: ACADIE Digest, Number 68 [misc questions]

   Hello one and all,

I have a few items I wanted to bring up..

The first involves the amount of music Lanois has out. Does
anyone out there have a complete or at least half-complete discography for
Daniel's work? I know only of the two albums, sling blade and the last
track on Plus from US. What about the singles?

Second, would anyone out there want to sell or trade hard to find
DL music? I am looking for any songs that one cannot find on the above
recordings.

Third, was it just me or was DL absent from the thank list in the
new U2 album? I thought it rather odd that DL was not mentioned while Eno was. Oh well, my own interest possibly..

Lastly, when will the new DL album come out, if there is even any
recording going on? Does anyone have an idea or know any rumors?

For my Spring break I went to Quebec city and the minute we
crossed over the Canada-US borderline we put DL in the tape player. The
music fit so well with the snow and the landscape. The ebst part was
passing over the river ACADIE. The landscape completely gave more depth
to the music of Daniel Lanois.

Also, I really enjoy people writing in French on this newsgroup
and I wish in many ways that more people would do so. Just my observation and thought. Take care all.

					Chris

[Editors Note: In regards to the discography, it is available on the
web site. I plan to do some updating in the near future and give the
site a new look. -- Kenley]

Subject: Shoeshine Mamma

Something that has always amazed me about music is how it can
be so intensely personal in terms of how each individual
experiences it, and yet how widely appreciated it can be. I
wanted to share with this group my own experience of Daniel
Lanois' music.

I grew up in a cold, small town 20 miles north of Edmonton,
Alberta. Dull winter skies and freezing cold would finally give
way to short, hot summers spiked with wild storms that would
punish the wheat fields. My musical coming of age was through
Friday night poker parties with a close group of friends - U2's
music was seized on by all of us from their first album. There was
passion, energy, and a darkness that seemed to hint at a bigger
world outside and within.

Peter Gabriel's work was also a heavy influence on me during
this time. Like most avid fans I read liner notes and noted the
name Daniel Lanois appearing with increasing regularity on the
music I loved.

In 1985 I finished medical school and started practice in
Canada's Arctic, then other remote parts of Canada, working
with aboriginal people. In 1989 I left to work overseas with the
International Committee of the Red Cross in conflict areas - my
original goal in going to med school in the first place, and a
decision I can directly trace to the influences of the music I had
always loved and continue to love.

In Sri Lanka I met a woman from Geneva who was also working
with the Red Cross. We were married less than a year later. On
our honeymoon we were back in Canada, enjoying a break before
going back to work in Cambodia. It was my wife who introduced
me to Daniel Lanois' music. I suppose anyone's time spent with a
lover is special, but that memorable introduction to Acadie is
something that will always remain with me. My admiration and
respect continued and deepened, and I remember many nights in
places like Cambodia and Afghanistan when I would feel down or
alone being able to draw on the music of this wonderful artist for
support.

For me there is something very Canadian about Daniel Lanois -
something that makes me proud to live in a country peopled by
those who carved out a living from a bitterly cold and often
desolate place. Quand il melange ses paroles en francais et
anglais ses chansons me semble comme un espece du pont entre
nos deux identities Canadien qui vivre un existence singulaire.

There is a song on Acadie called Silium's Hill. In it he creates
with a single line a very powerful image for me of the cold
Canadian prairie landscape of my youth. Now my wife and I
live in Vancouver, and the prairies seem a long way away from
this place of mountains and rainforest. I am finishing medical
specialty training in public health - another step related to a path
I started out on so many years ago.

I began this training in 1993, after finishing the first stage of my
overseas work. Before returning to Canada my wife and I saw
Daniel Lanois play in Geneva. A small crowd, and very intimate.
Daniel wanted to close out the night with something acoustic,
something quiet. In a burst of excitement I shouted out
Shoeshine Mamma - the poor woman in Silium's Hill. Daniel
cocked his head quizically to one side, just for a moment.

Afterwards I have wondered what he might have thought in this
briefest of seconds. It will probably be the only instant where I
expressed anything that he could hear, and in that split second of
a shout over the heads of other fans to a performer on stage is, I
suppose, the entire range of frustrations for every fan who
wants to convey their heartfelt respect, admiration, and love of
music for the artist who creates it.

Sometimes I wonder if he was wondering how a supposed fan
could screw up the name of something he had called Silium's
Hill. But for me he has given a gift, and the gift is to revisit the
landscape of my youth through the eyes of a lonely woman. And
for me the song will always be Shoeshine Mamma

the chance to buy one at a show near Toronto a couple of years ago and
didnt' (Duuhh). I have been looking for too long now. I Emailed the Brockum
group (the co. that makes a lot of concert shirts) and have heard no
response. Kenley.. can you use your conections.
Also. I don't know about anyone else but I am geeked to think that Lanois is
going to come online one of these days. Fantasy: Lanois holds a private
concert somewhere for just us. I would hithchike anywhere to see him play
intimate and live. Any other takers?

And... Just listened to the KCRWW tapes from califronia radio.. If you
haven't heard them yet you are missing out! He plays a lot of NEW material
that is going to be on his next solo album... Weird new sound.. sort of new
age.... Theres a Spoken Word piece on there that is awesome!
Check it out!

Subject: Discovery of ACADIE

Since becoming a subscriber to ACADIE recently, I have been reading the
entries with interest.
I have enjoyed Daniel Lanois' work since my discovery of "Winona" and then
"Acadie". While
I appreciate his production efforts, it is mainly his solo efforts that I am
interested in. I have a
copy of "Rocky World" which is an excellent overview of Mr. Lanois'
production, song writing and performing efforts. I particularly like the one
song on the video that is done both acoustically and electrically - "Need
Somebody". To my knowledge it has never been recorded on audio.
Incidentally, Mr. Lanois' has a music credit in "The Last of the Mohicans" (I
discovered this one night when I was too lazy to turn off the tape and the
credits ran an inordinately long time). After I noticed that, I had to watch
the movie intently to see where his music came into play. If anyone has seen
the movie, my best guess is that he composed the choir-like French singing in
a scene in the French general's headquarters. If I'm not mistaken, Mr. Lanois
plays the priest who leads the children in song. (Just a little tid-bit -
maybe someone could corroborate?) Anyway, I live in the Cleveland area and
I've never met ONE person who knows who Danile Lanois is or who has heard his
music (except those that I've turned on to it). It's kind of nice, in a way -
personal. So - I'll keep reading with interest. Kathy

Before someone does something foolish and buys a local h album, a warning;
the (horribly out of place) song on the Sling Blade soundtrack is a cover,
of the band Guided By Voices. The album the orignal is on, Bee Thousand,
is well worth your time, but local h, IMO, are worthless. And,
incidentally, the song on the soundtrack is not in the movie, nor does it
have anything to do with Sling Blade, except for the fact that local h are
