She will be in the Bay Area at the end of June. WOW. I am totally impressed with everything. Kingsway is incredibly beautiful - it looks nothing like a recording studio. I'd love to go there sometime. I'd really like to track down the Rocky World video now! griffith ______________________________________________________________ Griffith Davies hbrtv219@email.csun.edu [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Date: Wed, 30 Apr 1997 14:19:17 From: Eric Terpening Subject: digest #68 I'm about a week behind in e-mail so this is is reponse to Digest #68. Angela Pancella asked about Emmylou on the LJ record. Her backing vocals should be decipherable on tracks 9 and 10. Mant thanks to Graham Verdon for posting the interview! I was really excited to hear about Dan spending time in JA. My _all-time_ favorite rhythm section is the Jamaican drum and bass duo of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare (who have become rather prolific producers themselves in recent years.) The thought of Dan possibly working with them or any Jamaican artist would be a musical dream come true for me. Are there any other reggae connoisseurs on this list? Cool! > Beck's latest effort which contains many similar production styles to > Dan's and incidetally ............he has Dan's highest admiration > and they are scheduled to some collborative work together. I think that this would be a potentially fascinating collaboration, although the Dust Brothers are definitely no slouches either. I'd also like to see another collaboration between Lanois and Peter Gabriel. I do like Beck's sense of energy and motion in his songs, and would definitely want DL to keep that energy going but add his spin on it. I notice that many of the DL productions seem to have a whole different energy to it (not that this is necessarily bad or good or whatever), but I wonder how Beck would sound with more loping, slightly laid-back sorts of grooves? It still might be cool...anyway, random thoughts before I dive back into studying for finals. Malaysia is not on the hitlist for such releases....surprise, surprise. Please feed back! you State side folks. Whilst downunder in Aus recently.....I read an interview with U2 in a music magazine tracing their evolution / metamorphosis from the early days to the present and was perturbed not to see a single reference to our man in the entire article....all production credit as it were was heaped on Eno !! I sense a kind of fallout between them / attempt at erasing the past. Can anyone tell me how to get hold of the single ..Bonne este...Bella or something to that effect that he plays at the start of the ROCKY WORLD video. There is also a demo CD that Dan put out .....of ambient tracks potentially for film soundtracks that is worth listening to. It includes ` New World Dream ' which was dedicated to Mandela and played at Wembley after his release by the DL band...AWESOME. Subject: The Web Site - The new web site looks great Kenley. Simple, functional and attractive. Keep up the great work. 2. Subject: Studio address - Does anyone have the exact street address of Daniel's studio in New Orleans? - The studio is called Kingway Studios it's somewhat on the edges of the French Quarter. It's not in the phone book (I know as I checked last time I was in town) so no luck on the exact address. As far as I know it's a full time studio but I've also heard through the grapevine that Mr. Lanois doesn't own the place any longer. So if you're going there to say hi to him, you'd probably have better luck in LA. (-: 3. Subject: Daniel & Ani Difranco - There is no collaboration between Ani and Daniel on Ani's latest double-live disc but as Gina opined, it's still worth picking up (as is the case with just about everything else that "righteous babe" puts out, imho). best, David - in vino veritas - [I believe it is in Crescent City - Kenley] [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] From: "Simon Kean" Subject: Re: Dune Soundtrack Date: Thu, 1 May 1997 23:20:07 +1000 >The Dune soundtrack is not by Lanois or Eno, although one rare Eno track >is featured on both the soundtrack and in the movie. I'm fairly sure Lanois was not involved. Just thought I'd clear this one up for you folks. What a great and pleasant musical trip this is! As a rule, soundtracks are usually high on drama but thin on new ideas. However, despite Jimmy Was sounding like a reworked Still Water, despite The Maker making another appearance, despite 79 seconds of Emmylou Harris, and despite a gratuitous Booker T track, Daniel's Sling Blade actually works. Effortlessly and in his typically low-key ambient pace. Is Lanois, the JJ Cale of the 90s?
