I just saw Slingblade. Movies travel slow in Northern Wisconsin.
I thought the film was excellent and Lanois' soundtrack worked
beautifully in it. The moods provoked by the music interlaced with
the tapestry of images on the screen. Needless to say I was
impressed. However, having purchased the soundtrack around
Christmas and listening to Lanois' music many times since, I was
struck with the gnawing feeling that this was not one of his better
works.
After seeing the movie, I immediately went home an put the disc on
the stereo. I'm sorry to say that without the cinematic ambience I
was left wanting. Over saturation I thought. Give it a rest. So I
gave it a couple days before I returned to it. Sadly, the results
were pretty much the same.
I still enjoy Daniel Lanois as an artist and producer extrodinaire
and anxiously await his next project, however I was wondering if
anybody else felt the same about Sling Blade.

Connoisseur, no, (admirer -- YES!) but other artists have flirted with
Jamaican grooves in the past, and I think there is a lot of potential there
for some interesting textures to be laid over such incessantly groovin'
rhythms. The Orb, The Police, and a lot of the so-called ambient dub music
has flirted with these in the past, with interesting results. I think that
the rhythms would be very well suited to DL's sensibilities, and that he
would bring out some of the sensuality of the grooves even more. I have a
reggae-isih rhythm track that I am messing around with at the moment -- I am
altering the tonality of the drums and adding some very "non-reggae-ish"
(find *that* in Webster's! ) guitars and atmospheres over the top of it.
I hope to add some female vocals as well. So far, this fun experiment is
sounding quite good!!!

I am new to this exchange of info on DL so my appoligies in advance as
I stumble in. I live in New Orleans and have just survived 7 days of
the Jazz and Heritage Festival. None of the acts I caught came close
to the performance by DL a few years back on what we still fondly
refer to as stage one. The guy in the audience next to me that
recorded the whole set has a treasure for sure.

Regarding Kingway Studios, I called information and got their number.
     (504) 561-1127. They are located on Esplanade Ave which starts at the
river and runs along the northern boundary of the quarter all the way
to City Park. The gentleman that answered said DL still has an
ownership interest but is hardly ever there.

Dear Acadiens,

The address of the Kingsway Studio escapes me but I can tell you to
how to find it.......

Take the tram that runs along the Missisipi heading East till you
reach Esplanade. Off there and make your way north along Esplanade
(which is the eastern boundary of the French Quarter) It can look
pretty rough around there .
After 3 -4 blocks you will cross St Charles' street and you will see
Kingsway on your left at the juntion of St Charles and Esplanande.
Its not far from Snug Harbour.... excellent R&B joint that is owned
by Charmaine Neville where Dan has been known to hang out when in
town.
I made a pilgrimmage there in Nov last year with out much of an idea
of its exact location and was amazed to see how few people new
about the existence of a major recording venue in their
neighbourhood. There is a great vinyl outlet around the corner where
Dan hangs out too.
There is no indication of what it is or the name ` Kingsway' . There is
a red light above the entrance and some green spot-lights visible through
the frosted side windows of this gorgeous old New Orleans mansion.
The only reason I knew, was that just as i was about to give up my
search...I heard a guitar from inside. I rang the bell ....... the
guitar contiued and there was no response.....................
The reord shop owner confirmed that i had been at the right place but DL
was not in town.

Subject: Digest 71 - reply to Mr. Lynch and question to Mr. Thuraisingham

In response to Mr. Lynch's quest for Kingsway Studio's address in New Orleans - I believe it is located on rue Chartres, which is on the edge of the French Quarter - A beautiful and enchanting area. But be careful of the Long Island Ice Tea's.

Mr. Thuraisingham's note re: a demo CD of ambient tracks/film soundtracks - is there a title and label for this collection? When was it released? Is this an official release? Please advise.

Take care,
n.
P.S. Kenley - nice presentation of new webpage!

Subject: In Need of Rocky World

Hello Lanois heads,

Yes, I'm yet another person who is unable to get the Rocky World video,
(I live in New Zealand)and am appealing to anyone who would like to
send me a copy (for which I will pay for of course). As an audio
engineer here at radio hauraki and other stations, I often read "Mix
magazine" from which I have a couple of lenghty interveiws on
songwriting and Lanois' recording techniques. For person who simply must
have everything.I'd be happy to send photocopys with the check
(I know,I know, its not a lock of hair, but its the best I can do, apart
from "wynona" without the "AMERICAN EDITION" stamp on it.)

p.s: thanks Kenley for the work you put in on all this.Has anyone
written to Dan.s manager, Melanie Ciccone ? I remember seeing the
address on one of these digests a while back.
