It's definitely not the same as "Wynona", that's for sure. And as I was most
likely the first one to launch a "criticism" of Sling Blade on this emailing
list, I'll address this comment...my problem with it is that while it does
create some interesting moods in within the movie's context, as an album, in
my opinion, I don't think that it really holds its own. I am not looking for
something that is "song-oriented" in the sense that his first two solo albums
are -- not at all. However, I am looking for something that gives me a
little more sense than some unfinished, half-baked works that involve heavy
doodling with a delay. When matched with the film, sure -- these pieces work
quite well for setting the mood. However, I stand by my original assertion:
I feel that they are not nearly as sonically rich or as interesting as some
of the work that DL has composed/been involved in previously. I feel that
something such as "The Pearl", the soundtrack from "The Last Temptation of
Christ", or some of the Michael Brook music all benefit from more interesting
patterns, changes, motifs, atmospheres, and sonic detail that is lacking in
"Sling Blade". I'm sure this will get someone's panties in a bunch, but
hey, it's my opinion, and I'm entitled to post it here.
DL has done some stirring, sonically complex, rich music by himself and in
collaboration with others, and will undoubtedly continue to do so. However,
it is my opinion that the "Sling Blade" soundtrack is not one of these when
divorced from the movie. Thank you for listening...

for the digest...
Just saw Emmylou Harris last week in the Dallas/Fort Worth area... she did
two shows, of which I saw the first. As expected, a heartbreakingly gorgeous
set, with lots of "Wrecking Ball", and a real variety of sounds, from
traditional ass-kickin' country to some ethereal ballads. People were cryin'
in the audience; a very moving show.
Anyway, her current guitarist hung out after and spoke with anyone who wanted
to say hi. He "replaced" Daniel after Lanois left the tour, but the basist
and drummer are the same guys who are billed as the "Daniel Lanois Band". If
you've been turned on to Emmylou via Wrecking Ball, I'd really recommend this
tour.
Two tips: Look for the backstage line after the show--Emmylou let anyone who
wanted to come backstage & say Hi... (I got a big hug!) Also, she said that
when doing two shows, they're both different... we missed "where will I be"
and "Goodbye", but she assured us they'd be in the second (but sold out)
show.

Hi everyone-interesting sidenote in last months issue of "Mix" Magazine.
"Producer Daniel Lanois demo'd songs with Milla Jovovich for EMI in Studio B
at Harold Dessau recording in NYC." She is the model/actress/musician (I
guess) who is in the recent film "The 5th Element" for those of you not
familiar with her. Also, I heard from a friend of mine that works in a guitar
shop which Daniel always visits when in NYC that he is looking for a building
to buy to do film/recording/photography work in. In regards to the effects
Daniel uses-he has become quite fond of the "Boomerang" analog looping
switches. You can do real time delay for up to 3 minutes and layer tracks on
top of each other. It also does real-time reverse guitar playing. Heard
prominently on the first track of the Sling Blade album. See-ya.

Thanks to both Lisa and Juani for the links to the Lanois article in the
Toronto Star, but it looks like they moved things around in the short
time since Juani's post. Here's what I found:

I wish Guitar Player would also put their interview with DL in their
back issues....and I wish he'd tour Japan, but I did see a great show at
the Front Line in Minneapolis a few years back out of sheer luck on a
visit home. Glad I get Acadie, anyway!

Sometimes I wonder what journalists from Montreal do during winter. They
hibernate? They migrate like the hummingbirds? One of them must have been
sleeping, it seems he just found out that the SB soundtrack is here. Hey,
fini la sieste! ;) The CD was already here in December, 3 months before the
film. But it's a nice thing to be late, because this journalist phoned
Lanois and we got fresh news from him in the last edition of "Voir". The
Bohemian is in his Mexico refuge, beginning the recording of the new CD,
which might be more experimental and more instrumental than the previous.
He had just recorded a few tracks with B. Blade. If everything is o.k.,
it's for next fall...

Subject: New Ron Sexsmith?
ICE Online lists June 17 as the release date for Ron Sexsmith's new album
"Other Songs" - I remember hearing that this was also produced by Mitchell
Froom, but that Ron also wanted to work with Dan once again - anyone know
if they've done anything together recently?
New Music Suggestion(s): Afro Celt Sound System's "Sound Magic Vol. 1" on
the RealWorld label. A curious but surprising mix of African Rhythms and
Celtic music. A few of the RealWorld regulars are on it and there's only
one track that delves a little too deep into the techno-dance stuff.. :)
Howie B - "Music For Babies" If you like Dan's really quiet instrumental
collaboration stuff (i.e. Apollo, Hybrid, etc.) you'll like this. Very
'trippy' as the kids say... (do the kids say that...?) :) It can be
fierce and calm all in one...
Ant
(Patiently waiting for June 11th's Chris Whitley concert here in Phx...
Finally! :) Go see him! Check out Les Rayburn's web page
for tour dates!)

Hi everyone!
On Saturday, in a french newspaper from Montréal, call «
Le journal de Montréal», I came across an article that was talking about
are «number one artist», and his last creation SLING BLADE. But the
article
was fillwith an interesting news. Since I dont know if Dan had mention
it inany other interview, I thought I would bring you all the great news
(sorry if Im too late in bringing you this news ), we will be able to
ear his
great and wonderful music soon since it seems that his next solo album
his
coming in fall!
He said that most of the songs are already recorded and from what I
could understand it was all done in his new studio in L.A.
Dan had also mention that the roots of this new album his base on the
SLING BLADE music(the textures and all the things we are used to with
Daniel from all those years) but very different at the same time.
Cantwait to ear it!
Talk to you all later,
Martine Lacasse
