As some of you may know, the Dave Matthews Band has covered 'The Maker' in
concert. Well, on their most recent tour, they have been doing 'For the
Beauty of Wynona,' to rave reviews. I hope the DMB fans who like what they
hear (and all of them do, almost invariably) go out and buy Daniel's music
(I've been encouraging that as much as possible).

(For those who aren't too familiar with DMB, they're worth checking out.)

Dear Kenley,

Thanks for all your hard work to produce this wonderful Website!!
I still can't believe I found a site devoted to DL. The first thing I did a year ago when I got onto the net was search for anything on him and his music.

The Sling Blade soundtrack has been rather controversial to say the least, but I'm sure DL was not involved in the final product (may be wrong, hope not)

'Shenandoah' goes for 1:19 min - I wish it would go for 5:10 like Arlo Gutherie's "Son of the Wind" CD - This is a fabulous CD and I highly recommend to all Acadie Fans.

I just wish DL or Emmylou Harris would visit Australia some time.

Thans again Kenley,

Greetings from REN
on a (cold) Australia Winter morning.....

I thought it might be interesting (or funny) to note that when I had checked
out
"For The Beauty Of Wynona" a couple of years ago, one store had the price
sticker over the knife, and one had it over the breasts. Which is better,
or which is worse?! Anyway, the most important thing is that the album
keeps my interest time after time, when so many other albums don't.

Thanks to those who found the article in 'Performing Songwriter' - great
article - and did anybody notice that the photo was shot in the same
room/set that Chris Whitley's album cover was shot at? :) I wonder if
this is at the Teatro itself?

And speaking of Whitley - this was in a recent 'New Machine' newsletter:

_________
WEIGHTLESS REMIX

Work Records has selected "Weightless" to be the second single
from "Terra Incognita". And late word indicates that "Living
with the Law" producer, Daniel Lanois will be remixing the
cut before it is sent out as a CD Pro version to radio
stations. Look for a sneak preview of the remix as soon
as it becomes available.
_________

Malcolm Burn actually produced "Living With The Law" but it's good news
nonetheless.. :)

Just saw Chris perform this past week - one word - Incredible... !

Subject: "Empire" movie work?

Forgot to ask... In the 'Performing Songwriter' article, it mentions Dan
did some film work for a movie called "Empire" - anybody know what this is?

There was a (very badly reviewed) movie last year called "Empire Records"
which has a song on the soundtrack by Coyote Shivers - I seem to remember
someone mentioning that Dan played on this album... or something? Maybe?
How's that for answering my own question... :)

New Music Suggestion:

The Miles Davis album, "Kind of Blue", that Dan suggests in the above
mentioned article, has just been re-mastered and released with supposed
remarkable quality upgrade - I haven't heard it yet, but either way you
can't really go wrong with Miles. :)

Kronos Quartet, "Night Prayers" on the Nonesuch label - This is from a few
years ago, but listening to it recently, I might suggest it if you like
Dan's film score work. Very very beautiful string quartet arrangements -
sometimes very dark. Their recent '15 years' best of album is very good
too, for a taste of all their great work.

Fellow Acadie-folk,

So while we're all waiting anxiously--and somewhat quietly!--
for the new Lanois work to come out, i have a *very tasty*
musical recommendation which is Lanois related, however
remotely.

I'm sure many of you saw/heard DL perform live a few years
ago when he was touring in support of _Wynona_. Some of you
on the U.S. east coast may have gotten the opportunity also to
hear Caryn Lin, an extraordinary electric violin-/violist who
opened for Daniel Lanois for part of the tour, and actually
performed with him on a few numbers. Her accompaniment on
"Ice" was particularly chilling. (Sorry, 50 lashings.)

Anyway, Caryn Lin is moving ever forward with her solo career,
doing some really phenomenal stuff. I don't think i can top
Lanois's description of her as, in a word, a "trail-blazer".
She's now on a young and exciting independent label called
Alchemy Records, and she is currently touring in support of her
latest release, _Tolerance For Ambiguity_, produced by David
Torn.

Check out a live performance if you get the chance. She has a
website with touring info, bio, pictures, et cetera:

	www.netaxs.com/~mnz/lin

For those of you in the Boston area, i know Caryn will be
performing Tuesday, 1 July, 8:30p, at Johnny D.'s in Davis
Square, Somerville.

	------------------------------

GEARHEADS: Caryn has in her rack a Lexicon JamMan and an Oberheim
Echoplex Digital Pro (last time i saw her perform).
These devices are much like the BOOMERANG pedal
Daniel Lanois uses (previously mentioned on this
digest). All three are basically very long delay
lines with infinite feedback capability so that
these very long "echoes" effectively create loops
of simple phrases or even entire verses. One can
add layers or simply solo over the existing loops
at will. When Caryn Lin performs solo, she can
and does essentially become a one-woman chamber
orchestra--all created in real time on stage.

Anyone catch a glimpse of what Lanois was doing
with the 'Rang during those few perfomances on
		the west coast?

For more info about the 'Rang, Jamdude, or Echoplex DP,
i highly recommend the Loopers' Delight website:

	www.annihilist.com/loop/loop.html

Sorry if i rambled.

Warmest regards,

Pete Koniuto
