She's currently touring with DL's awesome rythm section. (The whole thing sounds like a nice alternative to Ozzfest & Lollapalooza). I really got into Daniel's solo stuff when I picked up Winona when I was about eighteen or so. I was hooked from that point on. Huge fan of his guitar playing...Anyway, does anybody have the COMPREHENSIVE low-down on what kind of guitar gear he's using? Anything from instruments, to effects, to amplifiers. There was a Guitar Player cover story some years back that I used to have. Of course I lost it, and have no clue what happened to it. I remember it being really informative, but I've just been going on what I can actually remember from it. And besides, that was at least three or four years ago. Surely at this point he has introduced new sounds and devices into the equation. Anybody got anything? For that matter, does anybody know what recording gear he is using in studio situations? Just curious. If anybody has got anything just let me know. By the way, I saw Dave Mathews play an acoustic show in New Orleans this past Febuary. He introduced The Maker as a song written by a "hero" of his, who happens to live here in town named Daniel Lanois. It was a beautiful version of the song. Quiet and powerful at the same time. Oh well, this might be old news but I thought I would share it. Thanks a lot. I can't remember where I first read it but Ron has confirmed by response to my e-mail. Saw Ron Sexsmith perform in support of "Other Songs" last Friday. Great night; beautiful songs and a surprise seeing Don Kerr play drums and sing background harmonies so perfectly. Anyway, I had a chance to ask Ron if Lanois was ever in the picture for his second record, and he said "no" in a rather firm tone. He then continued to say how he liked Mitchell Froom's approach to his songs in terms of it being a "collaborative effort." Hmm...is our idol a tad heavy-handed when it comes to certain projects? Perhaps, but I have a feeling the new Dylan record will be the pinnacle of Lanois' production career. I'm a massive Canadian fan down here in Atlanta. By the way, I saw the U2 show at Clemson a month ago and I'm going to Chicago to see them this Saturday. Dan's work with them is still transcendent. Give the new album a chance and you will not be disappointed. The song DL produced for Shivers is Sugar High, which appears on the gold- certified sdtrck and on Shivers debut for NYC Mutiny Label. Does that help you any? Like most of the people that subscribe to this newsletter I sit quietly in the background and soak up all the comments and information without ever feeling that I should contribute. I`ve been a fan of Daniel Lanois since Acadie came out and I`m very happy with this newsletter. And a very spiffy web page too, I might add. I`m living in Japan now, but I used to live in Montreal (and various other places in The Great White North) and while I lived there I fell in love with traditional French Canadian music. I also got quite interested in my history (as a Canadian) which started with the French and there pioneering efforts on the East Coast. I`m fascinated with the way that Lanois mixes the traditional with the modern in his music. One of the things I like most about this newsletter are the suggestions and tips to other artists (I picked up Michael Brooks/Joseph arthur/Ron Sexsmith and others completely on the word of other contributors...thanks!!!:-) and thanks to you too, Kenley for all the tips about collaborative work, etc. Excellent!! I`m grateful to watch my music collection grow with artists that appeal to my taste(s). Unfortunately, I don`t have any riveting information about Lanois himself (with the exception of a comment my brother`s girlfriend (who used to front the Hard Rock Miners) made about him when she met him at a party in Toronto: She said he was dressed all in black with a flock of stunningly beautiful women surrounding him. Very soft spoken, she said. Surprise, surprise.) I`ve found that since I moved to Japan I`ve been listening to Lanois` music much more than I used to in Canada. Listening to his music evokes powerful memories of the places I have seen in Canada, especially the more remote open spaces. (I once followed the path of the "voyageurs" on a five hundred mile canoe trip on the Churchill river in Northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba) The lifestyle I led in Canada is outside the experience of many of the people around me so I`ve developed the habit of giving Acadie CDs to people who are curious about Canada. (I`m sure Bryan Adams would be disappointed, but......) If there are any subscribers out there that have a similar interest in traditional French Canadian music, I would love to hear of any groups or artists that anyone would care to reccommend. Most of the names of groups I used to listen to I`ve forgotten.... (although "Barde" does come to mind) so if anyone can jog my memory I`d be very grateful. Of course, I`m still looking forward to all the other tips and upcoming CDs, so if you know of some music that you like that you want to tell the world about...WRITE! :-) Thanks again for a great newsletter Kenley, and all the fans who add their two bits.
