Subject: six degrees of Daniel Lanois?

Some of you are familiar I am sure with the "six degrees of Kevin Bacon"
game wherein one seeks to link a random actor to Kevin Bacon through six or
less steps, based on the theory that everyone on the planet is connected if
one goes through at most six degrees of separation. I was trying to do a
similar thing with the music industry and Daniel Lanois, since he is linked
so directly with a diverse crowd and then an even more diverse crowd as one
expands the circle, say
U2, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, Luscious Jackson, Martha + the Muffins,
Peter Gabriel
in the first ring and then
Sinead O'Connor, Leonard Cohen, Joan Baez, the Breeders, ?, Genesis
as associates of first ring people and so on...Could anyone assist me with
linking to Ozzy Osbourne? E-mail me privately at anjelle@accessus.net, it
is, at best, a silly game...
Someone was looking for French Canadian music. I've got a Gilles Vigneault
tape--is he Quebecois? I don't remember where it came from.

I was doing some work on the Carolco Stages when Empire was being filmed
here in North Carolina and got to talk to Coyote about living with
Daniel. I think I remember him saying they were roomates for 12 years
in Quebec or wherever he used to live. I think Dan did some work for
Coyote but I don't think any of those songs made it onto the
soundtrack. I was playing in a band at the time, trying desperately to
get Daniel to produce our upcoming album, and was able to get a CD to
him through Coyote but alas, nothing ever came of it.

As I recall, there was a comprehensive article on Lanois in
Mix magazine a couple years ago, right after "Wynona" came
out. It is actually two articles, one interviewing Dan and
one with his primary engineer, Mark ____ (I forgot his last
name). It is worth checking out at the local library.

I just found out that Emmylou is playing Mississippi Nights
in St. Louis this month, with Dan and his band (so I hear).
Will definitely get there EARLY.

I still haven't caught the Emmylou PBS documentary. The
local PBS in St. Louis doesn't run things like the rest of
the U.S. Not even Austin City Limits (a major crime!)!!

I saw Emmylou Harris (with Buddy Miller on lead guitar and backup
vocals, Daryl Johnson on bass and backup vocals, and Brady Blade on drums)
at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz, California this last Friday. The show was
fantastic; they closed with "the Maker" and came back out for the encore,
playing a beautiful rendition of "Indian Red." Afterwards, I spoke briefly
with Daryl Johnson and thanked him for his performance. I had not
heard "the Maker" performed so amazingly! It lasted approx. ten minutes
and included a spiritual bridge in which all of the band except for Brian
left the stage while he continued to play the drums. When they returned
for "Oh river rise," the song opened up and swallowed the emotional
audience (many of whom were crying).

Buddy Miller played very faithfully to the Lanois style, and he seemed to
include some keyboard (DX-7, I think) sounds (I would guess from a MIDI
connection). Would anyone else who has been to one of her shows verify
this?

Thanks,

Pablo Viotti

[Editor's Note: The drummer is Emmylou's band is actually Brady Blade,
not his brother Brian.]

Dear readers,
As an avid Daniel Lanois fan (like pretty much everyone else here) I
was delighted to hear Emmylou Harris play an absolutely exquisite
version of "The Maker" and a very good, spirited version of "Indian Red"
at a Pier Concert here in Seattle on 7/3. Does anybody know if these can
be found on cd anywhere? I would LOVE to get a hold of them, if they
exist. Any info on Daniel Lanois covers by Emmylou Harris would be MUCH
appreciated, please write me, Nina Uchida, at
nina.uchida@helen.bush.edu. Kenley, you have done a WONDERFUL job with
the web site! Thank you so much for all the valuable info I get,
everybody.
Many thanks,
Nina

I saw Emmylou Harris in concert at a cool venue in Petaluma, California,
on June 29. The venue is an old West type theater. The concert was sold
out. Emmylou was wonderful. The sound was great. She did quite a number
of Wrecking Ball songs, plus some rocking country stuff. Julie Miller
(who is touring with Emmylou), came on before the concert started and
did a few songs from her new CD. Backed by her husband on guitar, Buddy
Miller, and (forget the name) a guy who played mandolin and fiddle (he
tours with Bob Dylan). Emmylou also joined her for a duet on one song.

Buddy Miller, played Lanois style guitar with his own flavor, quite
incredible. The base player, was awesome too, you'll recognize the name,
Darryl Johnson. The drummer, Duane (I think) Blade, brother of Brian,
was incredible, using the toms heavily, characteristic of most Lanois
productions. I was able to visit with Mr. Blade, for a while and he said
that Lanois's next project is his brother's CD and he said he will be
working on it too.

I also spoke with the musician (whose name I can't remember, the guy in
Dylan's band) that played with Julie Miller. He is currently working
with Tracy Chapman practicing for a gig that she is appearing at soon.
He told me that Dylan's CD is finished, however Bob Dylan is withholding
it from release (for reasons unknown). He did add though that he will
release it!

Its the first time I have ever attended a country music concert, though
you can hardly call Wrecking Ball country. I don't think I would have
ever seen Emmylou if it wasn't for Lanois. They also did a cover of The
Maker, which definitely had the heaviness of the Wrecking Ball sound.
Toward the end of the song, Johnson and Blade went into an awesome
instrumental jam session for about 5 to 10 minutes before being joined
by the rest of the band again to close The Maker. I looked about
occasionally to see an audience of "cowboys", and baby boomers (not that
many young people under 40). I don't think the country types were too
sure of the Wrecking Ball stuff, though she was applauded well at the
end of each song, with a rousing on-call.

If you get chance to see her, do so, you want forget the experience.

I had the pleasure of spending a sunny July 3 at/on The Pier in Seattle
seeing Emmylou Harris, Iris DeMent and Jimmy Dale Gilmore. "SpyBoy",
backing-up Emmylou, is magnificent. I could hear the Lanois touch in every
lush note. The concert was emotional and enthralling. Even the
non-Wrecking Ball stuff has "that sound"--and songs range from
lump-in-the- throat stuff to real rockers. For those of us who go 'way
back, Emmylou even sings "Songbird" and "The Ballad of Pancho and Lefty."
If any readers get the chance to see/hear this tour in ANY incarnation,
go. It is brilliant.
